Harvest Right Freeze Dryer Oil Filter and Oil Change - Freeze Dried Friday's (FDF)

  • New enhanced oil filter option for the Harvest Right freeze dryer. I am all about doing things the easy way and making life simpler for me. This method requires no special measuring, cutting, or strength since the filters are already the perfect size for the Brita filter. This video also shows how to change the oil in the vacuum oil pump machine too, the easy way. I have owned a freeze dryer since November 2020. It took over 3 months to arrive. Due to the noise, I can only use it on the weekends since it is in my office, but I am loving all the healthy snacks and long term food storage we are making from left overs that would have just gone bad in the fridge. More Freeze Dryer videos coming! Please subscribe for notifications for the next videos as I upload them.

    I’ve seen the toilet paper oil filter method, but wanted to share the face rounds that fit perfectly in the Brita filter.

      You could keep the used rounds for fire starter.

      @@NickFrom1228 that is a really good idea. Thanks for sharing!

    Great idea! How many batches can you filter before changing them? Where did you find the ball valve for your drain port?

    • @freezedriedfridays
      @freezedriedfridays  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry for the late reply. The vacuum pump came with the train port. So Harvest Right might be able to provide that to you. I would check a home supply store if they didn't have on or online. This one looks like mine: amzn.to/3Kmmx6Q
      Typically about 10-30 batches per change, but it really depends on how bad the oil gets. If there is cloudiness on the bottom of the oil, sometimes I will leave that in the bottom on the pitcher and just pour in the clear part of the oil floating on top if I am in a hurry, but I try to keep it clean and change it out the moment I start to see debris in the top part of the filter, usually 15-20.

    Ehhhhhh, I’ll continue to use TP. So much easier,,,,and I don’t buy cosmetic puffs. I think your really going through a lot of WOW! Trouble,,,,I found no problems with the toilet paper. Rather easy to do,,,and done! Lol! D

    So you use the oil forever? Hello from 🇵🇭 Philippines

    • @freezedriedfridays

      No, when it gets cloudy, I stop filtering it and toss it. It does last for a long time though when it gets filtered.

    My freeze dryer is set for delivery today, and my $5 Britta pitcher (eBay!) arrived yesterday! Now to stock up on those cotton rounds! Such a better idea than TP! Thanks so much for this video.

    I’m glad I seen this video before my freezer got delivered. This method of filtering the oil seems so much easier than the toilet paper method. Thank you for sharing.

      @freezedriedfridays  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for commenting. I️ appreciate your feedback. This is so easy! It also only needs to be changed when the oil gets cloudy. I️ didn’t need to change it this early, but wanted to share for others. Glad it’s useful. :)

    Thanks for this idea. I had been using the TP method, but stopped when it seemed to be dissolving in the oil causing a foaming condition and vacuum problems. Question. Do the cotton rounds absorb and separate the water in the oil? And how many filtering cycles until you replace the cotton? Thanks.

    • @freezedriedfridays
      @freezedriedfridays  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They do not filter out the water. So you will still have to freeze it. I’m not sure how many cycles, but it’s a lot. I️ changed it early for the video and just got my machine in November.

    Use toilet paper instead of the cotton! Lot more filtering

    • @freezedriedfridays
      @freezedriedfridays  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The filtering is the same.

      The cellulose in toilet paper absorbs more water major which is the purpose of filtering. The viscosity of the oil captures the air when it starts absorbing water reaches match maximum saturation reducing vacuum pressure do to different viscosity. The size is nice or you could do is put cotton on top and when I gets clogged up remove it making tp last longer.

      “Cotton fibers are the purest form of cellulose, nature's most abundant polymer. Nearly 90% of the cotton fibers are cellulose.”
      The purpose of filtering is to get rid of all the gunk. Either option is better than the one that came with the machine.

    What type of oil does the machine use?

    • @freezedriedfridays
      @freezedriedfridays  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here is a link to the oil that looks like the same one Harvest Right recommends: amzn.to/37IxxZ0 I would not use the other blue vacuum pump oil by dairyLand as it has detergents in it that can break down the machine. Retired at 40 Live. Life. Simple had a video comparing the pump oils too.

    They offer a no-oil pump but its $1,500. Has anyone used that model? Curious if its worth it.

    • @freezedriedfridays
      @freezedriedfridays  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It all comes down to personal preference and your specific needs. This comes up a lot and everyone is of a different opinion.
      I’m frugal and that pump didn’t seem to offer $1,500 more value. I️ don’t mind changing the oil. Just set it up and walk away to put the food away and wash the trays. Fill it back up when you are putting away your clean trays. That being said, if someone wanted to give me one to test out on my channel, I’d totally accept it!

    Does the pump consume some oil? I have lost have the oil after a run of 20 hours!

    • @freezedriedfridays
      @freezedriedfridays  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You loose some, but half sounds like a lot! I️ had to add maybe 1/4 cup every 6 cycles or so. I️ changed it several times/cycles before needing to add more. I️ would trouble shoot or call harvest right if that happens again.

    Freeze Dried Fridays , HI...👋
    I know you said it'll take awhile for all the oil to filter through but , did you notice about just how long the filtration part took , just very curious ..... A little knowledge is always helpful .... I'm sure you have at least a Ball park idea of how much time it took ...Thanks ...👌👍👋

    • @freezedriedfridays
      @freezedriedfridays  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many hours or overnight. I usually add new oil (or filtered the last time oil) and then rotate it. So I️ don’t typically use the same oil two cycles in a row.
