Kind of sad, Rex Garrod, Tim's co presenter passed away one year ago today( 4/8/2020), on April 8 2019, after a struggle with Alzheimer's disease at the age of 76. I loved this show from the first time I saw it. Thanks for uploading these on here Carl Lewis.

I agree. I live in America (Seattle, WA - northwest USA) and I'm not sure what years I saw your program but I LOOOOVED the theme song and everything about your program. It was the first program of its kind and I think that lots more people should know about your show because I think if they did that a lot more people would subscribe.

The red car body shell was instantly recognisable as the Peugeot 405, odd back then when it was launched (1987) the 'professional mechanics' didn't know what it was. It's still in production today (2019) in various parts of the world.

Starting around 16:46 there's a few color flashes, which progress to field order inversion glitches. Same as every other online copy of this episode. :( When the original broadcast tapes were digitized, whomever did this episode didn't bother to review it to ensure it was good. The bad copy went into both the NTSC and PAL DVDs. A few years ago I e-mailed with Tim Hunkin about it, he verified the PAL DVD set had the same problem with this episode. We discussed possibly doing a Kickstarter to buy the original films but at the time Kickstarter was for USA only. Tim said it would cost $16,000 for the films - didn't say if that was for ALL the episodes or if that was per episode.
Soooo, a Kickstarter to buy the original films, have them HD digitized and do a Blu-Ray release? Someone? Anyone?
Or how about someone who taped the show back when it was originally broadcast dig out a good copy of this episode and digitize it?

    • @greggv8
      @greggv8 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@MichaelKingsfordGray I assume the available online copies were ripped from a DVD set or converted from the master MPEG2 files used for the DVDs. Free distribution is permitted by Tim Hunkin with links here. www.secretlifeofmachines.com/dvds_and_videos.htm
The best chance your software would have for fixing this episode is to get a PAL and an NTSC DVD to rip the episode from so it will be in MPEG2, unprocessed into other, more lossy, codecs. If it can just slice and dice between frames to fix the bad field order parts, that would be OK. I assume if the DVD is in interlaced format it would be easier?
I did try a bit of fixing years ago using the best quality download I could find. I rendered a bit of a bad part to individual images, then in Photoshop I made a pair of line masks and was able to successfully create fake fields and swap between frames. IIRC I managed a sequence of 4 or 5 fixed frames that when displayed in succession didn't have the bad fringing and jerking. But due to the nature of the lossy encoding it would've been a massive undertaking to fix it all, with having to make many different masks and selecting which parts of the frames to slice back and forth. That still wouldn't have done a thing for the color glitching, but that's the least problem with this episode. Fix the frame order errors and it would be improved enough.
An off-air PAL tape lurking in a shoebox in a closet somewhere in the former British Empire would be nice to find. PAL for two reasons, higher vertical resolution and the version shown on American TV has some edits made to the episodes so they're a bit shorter for squeezing in more commercials.

@@Autunite I've been getting them, and his new Secret Life of Components videos. The Remastered SLoM videos are digitized and upscaled from PAL recordings made in the 80's. Better than any other version available but digitizing the original films would be even better than that.

Soon there will be HD uploads of this series. Hopefully scanned from the original films so "The Car" will finally be available without the color synch and field order glitches that start at 16:35 . You see little weird flashes of color then brief jerks in the video, getting progressively worse.
That's from whomever digitized the broadcast tapes (that were telecined from the film Hunkin and Garrod shot) not checking their work to ensure they got a good capture back when the DVD sets were made. The episode is bad on both PAL and NTSC DVDs and in every online copy currently available.
I've been looking and asking for years to try and find someone who taped the original TV showings of the series but no luck.

Jones: Oh it is, it is sir. Everyone wants a bit under the counter.
Mainwaring: Yes I’m sure they do.
Jones: If I could tell you some of the things that have been offered to me for a bit on the side, it would make your hair stand on end.
      Mainwaring strokes his bare head
      Mainwaring: I’m sure it would.
Jones: Mind you, I couldn’t take advantage of half of them, not even if I was so inclined.
Mainwaring: No. Well, as you know, I never ask any favours. But, ah…
Jones: Don’t quite follow you sir.
Mainwaring: Well, it’s just this ridiculous urge that Mrs. Mainwaring has conceived for ox tail. You know how women are from time to time.
Jones: You mean, like pickles, sir?
      Mainwaring: Pickles?
      Jones: Yes sir, pickles.
      Mainwaring: I don’t think I quite follow.
Jones: At certain times, ladies and women take a fancy to pickles.
      Mainwaring: Do they?
      Jones: Yes sir.
Mainwaring: Well Mrs. Mainwaring doesn’t want pickles, she wants ox tails.
Jones: She shall have one sir. She shall have the finest oxtail in my coldroom and I shall take it ‘round to her personally.
Mainwaring: That’s very kind of you, thank you very much indeed Corporal.
Jones: I must say, this is a very exciting bit of news sir.
      Mainwaring: What is?
Jones: Well, you know, Mrs. Mainwaring fancying a bit of ox tail, if you know what I mean.
Mainwaring: Is it? I wouldn’t say it was particularly exciting.
Jones: At any rate it must be very unexpected.
Mainwaring: No, it’s not really unexpected, it’s just that Mrs. Mainwaring gets like that from time to time.
Jones: Excuse me asking you sir, but how is it you’ve never had any?
Mainwaring: I don’t know, I suppose it’s just that I’ve never wanted to ask for your help before.
      The phone rings:
Mainwaring: Elizabeth? Oh, I've got very good news for you my dear. Yes, your troubles are over. Mr.Jones is going to deliver it himself.
At the end of the show:
Mainwaring: Owing to a slight misunderstanding between Corporal Jones and myself, certain rumours have been circulating in this town regarding my wife's condition. They're quite untrue. Mrs. Mainwaring and I have never been blessed that way but in every other way it has been a most happy marriage. In fact, almost blissful.
The phone rings in the office:
Wilson: Would you like me to answer that sir?
Mainwaring: No thank you sergeant. It'll probably be for me.

Now the human population there has doubled to around 330 million people but the number of cars has increased to around 300 million or almost a car for every man ,woman, teen and infant.
    It's insane
Modern passenger cars have lots of safety features for protecting their occupants from vehicular accidents yet are a danger to people that don't occupy them in addition to being hazardous to property or killing vast numbers of people with their poisonous and cancer causing emissions

      @adrinathegreat3095 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I agree it was more fun, and certainly shorter and more brutal, had 2 great uncles killed in building accidents many years ago, neither would have happened today.
As kids we'd always mess about in illegal dumps, often big pits at the end of playing fields, chucking bricks through old tv screens, hiding in old fridges and freezers, old scrap cars that nobody could be bothered taking to the scrap yard because it was to far and no money was given would end up being dumped in a field or driven into a lake somewhere.
Totally different times then, those that hanker after those days are often sitting in a house with all mod cons and driving the latest vehicle's and certainly wouldn't want to walk 5 miles to do a 12 hour shift in a factory

    • @robinwells8879
      @robinwells8879 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No I was thinking more about going to the scrap yard to take off, yourself, the bits you needed for pennies rather than buying them new and having them fitted. Wiring a house alone for the first time at 15. Para-scending behind land rovers in stubble fields. Mounting lawnmower engines in dinghies as inboard motors and navigating river ways. Playing with sodium chlorate and sugar!!! Making your own harness with old seatbelts and a sewing machine and teaching yourself to descend cliffs. Sounds like I just had a nicer childhood than your experience. Sorry to hear about the great uncles though.

is there an episode of internet ?

    • @matthewbanta3240

This series predates the popularity of the internet. The best series on the growth of the computer industry and then the internet that I have seen is "Triumph of the Nerds," and "Triumph of the nerds 2.0.1" by Robert Cringley. There is also an book called "Accidental Empires." The first series is about the computer industry while 2.0.1 is about the internet. The series is a bit dated (late 90's) but it really shows how the internet got started.

You mark my words, they’ll never catch on. Horseless cartridges? What ever next? Respectable horse owners like me consider this madness.

If your horse gets hungry then you can just stop by the side of the road and let him eat some grass. There are no pools of petrol at the side of the road so with a petrol car you're stuck.

12:31 | English legalities can be confusing and unlawful. There used to be a loophole permitting farm vehicles like this one onto the highways. I wonder if this traveling bonfire is still considered road worthy if you have the correct employment papers.
