  • Time for Tannus!
    Ok so lets give these puncture free tyres from Tannus a try. I've never fitted one before and did nothing but follow the instructions and watched a few videos beforehand.
    It all seemed to go ok if you ask me. Not technically difficult but does require a bit of strength to get the fit done.
    Anyway, I hope someone finds this helpful. Any questions then ask away in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them for you.

    Anybody checked on the cost of having them put on for you at a bike shop, that's where I'm headed, but thank you for showing me that if you younger guys struggled getting them on, then us old timers haven't got a chance, Ha! Ha!. That's the best part of life, learning from the struggles of others in life and knowing your own limitations, not to proud to get it done for me in Arizona, thanks for the video.

    Reminds me of many years ago, it was a Sunday around 1700hrs and i was preparing for starting a new job on Monday morning, as it was going to be a 4.am start i went out to check the car, i could not believe i had a flat tyre, so i rooted in the boot only to find the spare was also flat, in those days there was nothing open on a Sunday so i set too with a handfull of screwdrivers and the like to fix the puncture, it took over two hours to get the tyre off, i fixed the puncture and attempted to put the tyre back on, after nearly giving up several times, no skin on my knuckles i finally got the tyre back on at 2300 hrs, i then realised i could not inflate the tyre as i had no pump, so off i toddled just over a mile and a half carrying the wheel to the nearest petrol station with an airline, inflated the tyre and set off home, after 30 minutes trying to explain to the police that the wheel was not stolen, they kindly gave me a lift home where i was able to prove my predicament, it was around 1.15 am when i climbed into bed. never again it nearly killed me.

    Nice one Tim, I have just returned from my second morning ride on my trike, with three bright new yellow Tannus tyres. They seem to be bedding in very well and look fantastic. The ride is perceptibly harsher than it was on the Swalbe racers but no fear of punctures ! Fitting the three 16” tyres in the one day nearly killed me, arms are still sore. Like you I warmed the tyres and used cable ties. I noticed you did not use the plier like tool for forcing the clips into final position. I did not have that tool but feel it would have made life much easier. Enjoy your first ride on the new tyre and thanks for the great vlog.

      HI John. Glad to hear you're enjoying your new tyres. The "p" tool was useless for pushing the pins in. The only use I found for it was levering the tyre on.

    Well done Tim on getting your tire on. I also use lots of tie wraps. Other than that I do it the same as you did. The only way I have got them off is to cut them off. But being careful not to damage the rim. Although I have been so pleased with mine that I've only tried it once. And that was because the tier was a light weight and thinner one (which they don't seem to make now). And it did flatten after a while of riding it.

    Morning Tim,
    I recently bought Tannus Armmor insert, I would strongly recommend contacting Tannus to check Tyre selection with there Armour options to ensure the correct size is bought.
    Installation is relatively easy, once the Tannus Armmor is removed from the package, wipe the outside and inside with a wipe making sure it is clean. Then work it around the inside off the tyre which is partly attached to the wheel, the pour in some talcum powder which stops the inner tube sticking to the Armour reducing puntures.
    Then use tyre lever to work around wheel using zip ties as the tyre is seated. The inner tube needs to be 26x1.1-1.5, tyre 26x2.0 as the Armour takes up the extra space. Then pumped up to 40psi add or decrease as required.
    Ride quality omg it takes the edge off all the lumps and bumps in the road surface, I would give this product 10 out of 10, it doesn't decrease my overall speed and certainly increases my comfort.
    Regards Iain

    Hi Tim,
    I hope things are going well with you and you beloved ones. Just wondering since you haven’t posted any new video in awhile. So fingers crossed we hear from you again real soon. 😊
    Another great video, many thanks for sharing! 👍🏻
    Would be great if you share some feedback on the performance of your new tires (e.g durability, grip on gravel...).
    My wife and I ride the Marathon Plus MTB on our Scorpions due to better grip on gravel road, especially when going uphill. So far we‘re very happy with it, the only downside is the issue of getting a puncture while touring. Especially since we have the Go SwissDrive in the back which makes the change/repair quite tricky. So the Tannus tires might be a good alternative. 🤔
    All the best,
    Phil

    I fitted one of these tyres before I found to make it quicker was a bag of cable ties . Place the tyre into the rim as far as you can then cable tie the tyre to the rim contine on and get a bit more in , cable tie again and cut the previous cable and repeat this technique till tyre in fully on ,the cable ties prevent the tyre from popping out all the time . These tyres drastically slow the bike down I ran it for few weeks and it's like cycling with the brake on and a hard ride but brilliant if the road has a lot of stones which causes punctures. I had to take it off I'd rather get the puncture and fix at side of the road than use this tyre and get no puncture

    Love to hear your comments after riding, hope they are a lot better than the solid foam type from the green tyre company I gave up on them poorer pedaling efficiency & such a harsh ride that it wrecked the wheels. The rims,spokes & hubs suffered terribly. Tim I hope these are much better than the green tyre ones I had cos those rohloffs are expensive & only have 32 spokes as mine had 36 & had the most spoke breakage on any wheel I ever had with them on.

    New triker here. To my cynical mind, "Tannus reckon the tyre takes 60 to 100 miles to "bed in" indicates that, over a short amount of time, these tires will certainly deform. So, it is no surprise to me that some have reported flattening, even though these are "solid" tires. I await your results with great interest. Happy Trails!

    Congratulations on trying the Tannus tire! You may recall I mentioned in your previous vlog I ride with Tannus tires. I look forward to hearing your experience of riding with it. Nice color. Nice installation demonstration. I'm impressed you got the tire on without using the P-tool to set the pins. Curious if you tried the P-tool to install any pins off camera? Did you get a chance to weigh the old tire, inner tube, and liner to do a weight comparison? For me, the Tannus tires weigh less than the tire/tube I used previously. The ride experience is important. I don't look forward to removing the tires when the time comes. Note- last week I avoided 2 flats thanks to the tires. -Gary

    • @TimsTrikeTrips
      @TimsTrikeTrips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I must remember to mention these things in another vlog. The tyre & tube I removed weighed 580g. The tannus weighes just 460g.
      I tried using the p tool and almost damaged the tyre with it. I found that I couldnt get he angle right for it to work so gave up with it almost straight away.

    • @oneandahalfmen
      @oneandahalfmen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry the p-tool didn't work for you. It really makes that step easier - when one has it figured out. Now that you mention it, there is a certain way to get it set to the tyre. There seems to be many "tricks" to getting the tyres installed "easily." Don't see a video on using the p-tool. Darn.

    Tim,
    Somehow I missed this episode back on the 6th, so I went back to watch. Intriguing tire. I wonder if soapy water might have made it easier to slip on? Or..did they discourage that method? It will be interesting to see how these hold on with high speed cornering on a good down hill stretch. Did they give instructions on removing it if needed (like if your rim cracks or something like that)..?
    Another question I had on the tread was grip on wet asphalt roads, and/or snow covered roads (Colorado)??
    Be well and stay safe,
    bf

    • @TimsTrikeTrips
      @TimsTrikeTrips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They gave very few instructions on fitting... other than levering it onto the rim as I did. They did suggest just the one zip tie but it was easier to use more. There are also instructions on removing it and that doesn't look easy either. Hope fully it wont come to that though.
      I cant say about wet/cold conditions just yet though I will continue to report on the tire as we go along. Reviews online suggest it is comparable to other pneumatic tires but I'd rather find out for myself before recommending them to anyone.

    Did the instructions say, "You'll need a torch..! " LOL. I have heard these are very tight and difficult to put on. I looked into these, (eXpensive..!). You could also use a hairdryer to warm the tire before starting. I'm looking at going tubeless instead. Reason: smoothest ride you will every have. I have the Schwalbe BigBen PLUS that is virtually puncture/flat proof. This combined with the tubeless will be a winning combo.

    • @TimsTrikeTrips
      @TimsTrikeTrips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The hairdryer would probably work but you might just make hot spots and then the tire would stretch unevenly. It was far easier to pop it in the airing cupboard and go have a coffee for an hour.

    • @rdkuless
      @rdkuless 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TimsTrikeTrips Tim... I take it back... I talked to my bike mechanic, he said "you have to have a tubeless ready tire and bike rim". he also said, "they work well until you get a puncture that is too big to seal instantly (that doesn't take much). And when they fail, they are a complete mess, spraying gross white sealant everywhere."
      Please let me know how you like this new Tannus Tire...? Does it provide any shock absorbing..? I do think, if your careful, you can use a hairdryer on low setting at about 6" would be safe. Just heat it evenly before you begin. I wouldn't hold it on just one spot for too long. I do this with my Schwalbe tires because that makes it easier to install them, and the warm tire also helps my hands not to cramp up.

    Nice color you went for. As people didn't see you, they will now.
    I use tires with reflector stops on it. I am getting front tires with it. That works very good.
    What a work to put it on. Not my thing to do. Are you going yo put them also on the front wheels or aren't they available in 20inch?
    I think that for off-road that they will slip. I think that the profile is to smooth.
    I don't know if it is something gor me. You have suspension but I haven't and I use air pressure to smoothen my ride.
    You need to change it as it wears out just like other tires. It will be slicks, but as you remove them, I would just cut them off. Is easier than trying to get them off.
    I am interested if you notice a difference in riding.
    Today I got new jeans for on my Trike and a second shirt. Maybe the jeans are a bit hot in the summer, but riding went great with it. I can always get shorts if needed.
    I am now from top to bottom in one brand. I noticed that today when I was paying. All Rogelli even my shoes.
    Also did a nice ride today. I must change the route a bit so I can make it a smoother ride and more interesting ad the start. Sadly my battery died soon after I left. Forgot to charge it. So the best part wasn't recorded. Where you love to go off road, I love those narrow roads with lots of corners in it. On a Trike going trough a corner on high speed is just great. Especially as they are close to each other.

    When I worked as a cycle mechanic for Royal mail, we trialed solid tyres, made by ,I think Green speed, they were difficult to mount, and most felt they were slower, harsher to ride and in the wet soaked up the water, also ,because of the profile of the tyres, were prone to tramlining , I.e hard to steer.
    They also ruined wheels, making the spokes go slack, all in not a successful trial, but this was 30 years ago! Maybe the tech had improved, but I can't say I would fit them.

    • @TimsTrikeTrips
      @TimsTrikeTrips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've read some horror stories about solid tyres through the ages. Hopefully these are "new tech" and will actually work, but thats why I'm trialling them so people can see how I get on. I'm not sponsored by Tannus and paid full price for the tyre. If its no good then I'll be telling everyone for sure.

      Actually its a weight loss for me Debbie. The tyre and tube that I removed weighed 120 grammes more than the Tannus. If I eventually decide to change the front tyres too then I'll also gain from not carrying spare tubes, repair kit and pump too. So that leaves us with ride quality... thats the biggy isn't it. Well lets wait and see. Tannus reckon the tyre takes 60 to 100 miles to "bed in" but I'll be letting everyone know how I'm getting on with them you can be sure.

    Hi Tim is this tyre a non puncture and if so who supplies it ? I was wondering if your trike was a lot of money or is the more you want on your trike cost more then a standard one ? Have you ever thought about going to Norfolk of a ride and camping? Yours Nigel.

    • @TimsTrikeTrips

      Hi Nigel, the tyre was supplied by Tannus themselves on their webpage and cost £60. My trike is quite pricey and I had a few additional extras added to it when I bought her. I will be going to Norfolk and camping at some point.

      I thanked Paul for his help and advice but he didnt suggest the tyre. Yes it was tough but it is "fit & forget"? If (Big IF) these work them its complete peace of mind. No need to pump them up, no need to carry repair kits, pumps etc. They cost £60 which is more than twice the cost of a Schwalbe Marathon. I'm very much just testing these out at the moment. Regarding the amount of work putting on the tire - The good part is you don't have to take it off, put it on again until it's worn out. No more effort really for each 'flat tire' event. No pumping up the tire to the proper pressure.

    • @paul-hill

      I have tried tannus tiers on a 2 wheeler recumbent and would not recommend it as you do seem a bit unstable on certain road surfaces. But on a trike the is no difference to a pneumatic tier and I would recommend any trike owner with full suspension to try them.

    • @TimsTrikeTrips
      @TimsTrikeTrips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Richard, having now ridden a few miles on it I agree with Paul. I would feel quite unstable on two wheels with these tyres. It feels like your rolling on marbles at times. Very disconcerting. But of course on a trike it makes no difference at all. Also Tannus state that it can take 60 to 100miles for these to "bed in" so we will see a bit further down the road I guess.

    1) You mention something called a P Tool, but no explanation of what it's for, where to get it etc.
    2) No specification of the wheel you used. I've heard reference to hooked and hookless - maybe that applies only to tubeless tyres, but either way I'd have appreciated you at least mentioning whether there are any restrictions on using a "conventional" tubed wheel.
    I'm not being snarky just for the hell of it. I don't know anything about the technology and I'm trying to find out - hence I'm looking at videos like this.
