On June 21st, Martin was called out to check on a young Kestrel Falcon in a person's yard. Upon arrival, Martin saw the nest nearby. Based on the size and age of the Kestrel, Martin knew the parents were still around to care for the young one. In this case, the Kestrel was in no danger and knowing he was all right, the home owner's were happy to share their home and leave him be.

Dear Mr & Mrs Tyner: I’m a lifelong animal lover (turned 60 this April) with a background in veterinary assistance. I live in a very rural area in Northern California and would appreciate any advice on who to contact in my state regarding becoming legal to work with birds of prey. Thanks in advance, and many thanks for all the good you do for these wild beauties!

I recently put up a nest box designed for Kestrels. It was too late for this year's breeding season but I hope to get a pair next year. Years ago I had a 'relationship' with a kestrel outside my home. First time I saw it, I was on my way home. When I saw him on the telephone wire, I turned around to the near by pet store and bought a small mouse and let it go in my yard. It went for it after I went into the house. After 2 more times of seeing him and going to the pet store for a mouse, it recognized my van and would fly in front of me to let me know he was there. I would go get another mouse. This would happen about once or twice a week for a couple of months. Then I stopped seeing it. It was nice while it lasted.

Had a falcon that used to live in the trees right near my house in Florida. Every so often you hear shrieks and look out and there would be the falcon sitting on a branch feasting on a pigeon it had caught in the air. Some days there were pigeon heads and body parts all over the yard!

We had to take eastern cottontails out of the pond a couple weeks ago (ornamental pond with large stones all the way around.) The first one was sitting next to the waterfall soaking wet. We found 9, two sets of babies. We put them in the large lilies about 5 feet away because we have a couple of red tails that like to hunt there. Its a fenced courtyard so they were relatively safe. Only seen one as of late. I wish i didnt have to touch them but it was better than finding them floating.

Martin, is it a bad sign when one of these little guys is willing to sit on your hand of his own volition? Because when I had to move one to get it away from a cat, it was content to just sit there on my glove, and took some coaxing to get into a tree.

  • @judil3294

Yeah, I was a bit of a dope the other day on the way to work and without thinking it through called 911 to ask who to call. She was very nice and put me through to local police. A young porcupine was walking in circles on the road. And no, I wasn't going to get out of my car. I couldn't tell if it had been hit and did wonder if rabies might cause that.

Hey Martin, I live in Kolkata India and a super cyclone amphan hit a couple of weeks back, lots of trees and thus nests were destroyed, I rescued a tiny blue throated barbet that was grounded and being attacked by crows. I need some help with the little fellow, would be glad if I could get some advice. It basically lost all its tail feathers thanks to the crows and had an injured left leg so it wasnt able to perch initially. The leg has since healed, but its tail feathers are growing very slowly, just a tuft in two weeks. I shall gladly provide pictures and more information, please help. Thanks, and god bless you for dedicating your life to avians, I have learnt so much thanks to the little one in the past couple of weeks, and wow was I amazed at how different they are to raise as versus cats or dogs. Looking forward to your reply.
