"The Czech Year" (Špalíček), also known as "A Treasury of Fairy-Tales," is a groundbreaking 1947 stop-motion-animated puppet feature film from Czechoslovakia, representing Jiří Trnka's inaugural venture into feature film direction. This cinematic masterpiece garnered international acclaim, earning Trnka widespread recognition in the animation sphere. The film unfolds through six captivating sequences, each delving into the rich tapestry of Czech traditions:
Shrovetide: The story begins with the vibrant and festive atmosphere of Shrovetide, capturing the lively customs and celebrations that mark this pre-Lenten period.
Spring: As the seasons change, "Spring" unfolds, depicting the awakening of nature and the joyous rituals associated with the arrival of this rejuvenating season.
Legend About St. Prokop: In this sequence, the film delves into local folklore, weaving a tale around the legend of St. Prokop and showcasing the deep-rooted mythical narratives of Czech culture.
The Fair: Transporting viewers to a bustling fair, this segment portrays the lively marketplace, where locals engage in trade, revelry, and the exchange of goods.
The Feast: Focused on a communal feast, this part of the film highlights the importance of shared meals and communal gatherings in Czech traditions, emphasizing unity and togetherness.
Bethlehem: The film concludes with a poignant portrayal of the Nativity story, bringing the spirit of Christmas and the religious significance of Bethlehem to the forefront.

Ohh dear! Jiri Trnka! Thank you for rescue these films!
Trnka was the master and genious of puppet animation from Czhekoslovakua. He created the most fantastic world and invented the technic for this kind of children cinema. These are short films.but he longs he did are amazing going in a totally different path of W. Disney. Unfortunately all his films, team of animators disappeared with the Czhek and Slovakia partition story.
These shorts deserve to be upgraded to 4K. One of the values is the quality of the image in 35 mm. Like paintings… in movement. He was an artist for that.
Thanks again. I’ll look for his features films. ❤

The reason why they are hard to find is because it was banned in Czechoslovakia after Trnka's death removing all his sound effects.
