      YES!!! Love how you're keepin' it REAL!!! I also had a 2nd degree tear and my Midwife said to lay in bed for at least a week, I couldn't go downstairs to the kitchen so my Hubby made all my meals and served them to me in bed every day, it was HEAVEN!!! But, we cloth diapered from birth as well, (despite sideways line from my midwife) and it's hard still to get things to fit snugly enough around her skinny legs, like your other baby. At 4 weeks now we just started offering pottytunities and I've made a good amount of catches. We're letting her have some diaper free time but not really observing for cues yet. It's quite a journey, everyone is super surprised that we're offering our newborn the potty, so I've had to explain it to a few people.

      @@GazeboDweeb Healing after giving birth is so important! And yet it was so hard for me to lay in bed for a week. I literally laid on my side to eat meals. My husband did all the diaper laundry that first week, and he's normally the cook too. My midwife knows me well, so she was pretty strict. She knew otherwise I'd be up and around doing things. It's hard to take time just to rest, especially with other kids. I did heal well, though, even without having stitches. Wishing you the best on your journey!

      Okay, we've been doing Cloth Diapers (since birth) and we started doing EC when she was 4 weeks old. My husband is actually on board w/ EC too, which I was SUPER surprised about, when he gives her a Pottytunity, he plays "Snake Jazz" from Rick & Morty as her sound cue. This is his contribution to the process so. . . I allowed it. ;-) I've been using a BABYBJÖRN potty insert and we've recently been holding her over the toilet. I can actually sit on the edge of the seat and hold her between my legs with my arms resting on my thighs and this helps take some of the weight off my arms and back which is much more comfortable. This also works well for EC when we're out and about. . . I just bring her into the bathroom with me and let her go. AND last Sunday my husband gave her some Pottytunities in the woods, so she had her first outdoor Pottytunity. ;-) Now that she's 6+ weeks old I do have some questions.
      ~ 1. How long to you keep them on the potty? As long as they are grunting? 5 Minutes? 10? Sometimes it seems like she's grunting and sometimes she's just making noise. How to tell if they still need to eliminate? Do you just wait until it happens?
      ~ 2. Do you hold them on even if they're fussy/crying? She sometimes gets fussy and cries and I'm wondering if that's a sign to stop, is that her struggling to eliminate (sometimes she will) should I wait it out? Or, take her off because I don't' want to associate unhappiness w/ the potty? Not sure how much crying to endure. This is especially relevant in the middle of the night when she's hungry/tired/poopy all at the same time.
      ~ 3. At what age can they sit on a little potty by themselves? When they can sit up unassisted? Do you hold them w/ a little support earlier?
      ~ 4. Do you offer the potty even if they've already soiled in their nappy/diaper? Sometimes I'll get straight up clean and dry inserts, and this is really exciting that I'm able to pick up on her cues and get the timing right. But, if she's already made booty brownies (more like blondies cause she's EBF) do I offer her the potty in case she's not done? Do I offer it to her just because so she gets used to it?
      ~ 5. When can they sign/signal consciously? I've seen some moms say their babies signed "Toilet" at 2 mos. Is this something we should work on right away? Is it fine to just keep following her cues? What's the best way to get her to signal?
      ~ 6. Does your baby "Hold" themselves until you offer the potty? I'm sensing sometimes that my baby will hold it until I offer her the potty, we get dry diapers sometimes after a good amount of time since the last change. I'm worried that she'll hold it too long or make herself uncomfortable/give herself a UTI/constipation etc. Is this a concern?
      ~ 7. Do you Pump/bicycle your baby's legs to help move stool along? Does this work? Should you let them manage on their own? Sometimes it seems like my baby's poo is "stuck" and she's straining and struggling to push it out.
      Thank you so much for your insights. ;-) This has been really easy to implement and I'm super surprised at how well it's working after only doing it for a couple weeks.

      @@GazeboDweeb Hi again! I will try to answer as best as I can. You may also be interested in reading a book about elimination communication, to give you a wide overview: www.ecpeesy.com/elimination-communication-books/
      1. I don’t keep track of exactly how long I offer the potty for, but not long. Maybe 1-2 minutes if I’m only expecting pee. Maybe up to 5 ish minutes if it appears that my baby is trying to poop. My babies normally pooped after feeding as newborns. If my baby straightens their legs and arches back, that is a sign they are done. I also ask, “any more? Are you all done?”.
      2. I stop offering if fussing or crying. Sometimes Baby wants to eat before or instead.
      3. I have baby sit on the potty once sitting up unassisted. I have put my 5 M old on a couple times just to practice and get accustomed to it. I will also start using a toilet seat reducer around 6M.
      4. I always offer the potty at diaper changes even if the diaper is wet or soiled. Baby usually goes some more.
      5. My baby started blowing raspberries to signal poop at 4M. My previous baby signaled consistently with blowing raspberries from 3-6M. You can also teach the ASL sign for toilet (shaking “t”). I haven’t yet since my hands are occupied holding baby.
      6. Babies will pee or poop in their diaper if they need to. I make sure to offer frequent pottytunities so my baby is comfortable.
      7. I have with my other babies. Haven’t needed to with this one. When you hold baby on the toilet, are they getting a good deep squat position? That helps. And being well hydrated. For me, that means I need to drink more water.
      I’m glad that EC is going well for you! I hope that cloth diapering is too. 💜Heidi

    Oh my goodness he is so sweet 🥰
    I love the idea of EC. I have never officially tried it with any of my children. I stumbled on it at 9 months with willow. She was pooping on the toilet for awhile once I noticed her morning cues.
    I have this idea in my head that EC parents are super hero’s with eons worth of patience 🙌🏼 I feel like EC and cloth goes hand and hand so well.
    If I ever had more babies I’d definitely give this a try.
    Lots of great info here Heidi 💕💖

      @ECpeesy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you! EC can be a lot of effort in the newborn days, when babies pee and poop so frequently. But I think EC plus cloth with an older baby (around 6M) is actually easier than just cloth diapering, especially if catching poops in the toilet. And it's fine to wait and start around 6 months when Baby is sitting up.

    I love your gentle approach. Does it matter if you just do EC part time? I'm considering switching to wool. since I used mainly PUL/TPU based nappies with my last child and only had one soaker for nights. Is it easier to EC with wool?

    • @ECpeesy
      @ECpeesy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You can practice EC part time! That can take many different forms. For instance, only offering the potty at diaper changes or only offering before bed and when Baby wakes. Whatever works for your family! Just be consistent with the times you do offer.
      Wool doesn't really make EC easier, but doing EC and catching poops in the potty makes using wool covers easier! The covers are less likely to get soiled with EC. 💜 Heidi

    I’m due with my third baby in august and interested in cloth diapering from birth with this one (my last baby I didn’t start until he was 7 months old). Your videos have been so helpful and have gotten me interested in wool covers this time around! I had never heard of Puppi diapers, but their covers look so nice and similar to PUL covers that I’m used to, and I’m wondering how you have ended up liking them overall. How do you find the bigger ones to fit and work?

    • @ECpeesy
      @ECpeesy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I love the Puppi wool covers! I could have skipped the newborn size and started with Mini OS, which fit him from 8 lbs. He also fit into the Puppi OS way sooner than I expected. He's been wearing OS since 9 lbs at 4 weeks old. The main thing with Puppi covers is that they are trim fitting so it's best to use thin absorbency underneath. I like pairing them with flats, preflats, or snap in inserts for the SIO version. I keep getting more Puppi 'cause they're just so pretty. I will share a video showing how the various wool covers fit on him. Congratulations on your baby on-the-way! 👣 💜 Heidi

      It's the newborn size! He was 6lbs 14oz at birth and it fit him well from birth. Now that he's 10lbs 10oz he's wearing the medium Babeegreens classic side snapping wool cover. The medium is plenty tight enough on the legs and waist but roomy on the bum. There is a lot of overlap in sizes. Some babies can start with size small instead of newborn. 💜 Heidi

    Thanks for your videos! They've been super helpful. I am due with my first baby the end of June/early July and friend of mine has given me 2 dozen Green Mountain newborn cotton prefolds and 2 of the newborn cloth-eez wraps, and now I'm trying to figure out the most cost effective way to expand this stash to cover the newborn phase. I don't have a huge budget but I want to make sure I have enough to cover the new born time. My husband and I do plan to practice EC but we're uncertain when we will start that full time once baby arrives. Do you have any suggestions or thoughts on what I can add to this stash? I was also gifted 21 Nora's Nursery diapers, but they work best on 10lbs + so I just doubt they will work for the new born phase. hmmm Thank you again!

    • @ECpeesy
      @ECpeesy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Congratulations! I would add either a dozen novice size prefolds (those lasted us quite a bit longer than newborn size) or a dozen newborn muslin flats, if you are okay with folding those and securing them on with a Snappi. The Cloth-eez wrap covers are great. I liked size 1 since it fit from birth and fit for longer than size 0. If you have room in your budget and are interested in wool, I love the Babeegreens classic side snapping wool cover (either NB or S). But it does cost about 4 times as much as a Cloth-eez polyester cover. Did you already watch my video showing how the various Cloth-eez prefolds, flats, and wrap covers fit on my son as a newborn? Things like a long sleeve shirt or dress paired with a cloth diaper and either leg warmers or long socks. I like sleep gowns at night. If needed you can add a sleep sack that unzips from the bottom. Always the strongest and reactive opinions that are the least informed. Over time baby can and does learn associations with the potty, typically noises consistently made and the consistent timing. Normal in many countries and before the disposable nappy programming, normal to have babies out of nappies by 18 months. Still normal in many countries. Please educate yourself.

    You are so gentle in your speech and approach to your baby.
    But I really do not understand what you tried to achieve?
    Sometimes, with our beliefs, we are missing the real point. Why would you push your child into the next stage of development before it's naturally ready to progress?! Is it your child's needs or your need?
    As much as I'm enthusiastic with hypnobirthing, I disagree with your idea (for a number of reasons, but I will state just a few... and it's enough :) ).
    You might think, you were successful because your baby has eliminated, but actually, you were not! Your little treasure passed something unconsciously, so obviously it has nothing to do with the purpose you aimed to. She wouldn't use the potty/toilet as need to. It's only because of gravitation and/or changed temperature (inside of nappy is warm; when you take it off, felt temp. become to be below body temp. what triggers urinating, what in simple words, is just physiological rather than a conscious decision and need to eliminating). IT IS IMPOSSIBLE for babies below 18 months (at least!) to have control over their bladder.
    What worries me the most is, you do not prioritize your child needs, but your own ambition (to be better than others? to be first? 'Look, my child used toiles at its 4th week!' Wow! Genious! Sorry to disappoint you, but your ego is over the human's ability.)
    GOOD ADVICE: if you love your child, and I believe you do very much, then stop thinking about yourself, planet, usage of nappies, and break the record, just focus on your baby's needs. Let her be a baby. And don't send her to school when she is 6 months old :) !!! Nurture her, be for her, and let her develop naturally... In other words, love her as she is! She is PERFECT as she is!!
    Much love to both of you! You both are lovable!!! X

      Hi Kami,
      I can understand how it is difficult to grasp the concept of elimination communication when living in culture that holds opposing beliefs. For most parents in modern Western cultures, it is not until they practice EC that they realize it is actually possible.
      I was fortunate to have traveled extensively before becoming a mother. There are many different ways of raising babies around the world. I first stumbled upon the concept of diaper-free babies in India. We shared a berth on an overnight train with a family with a very young baby. The baby was completely naked, without even a diaper. I wondered how the mom was not covered in pee and poop. I came home and researched and found the concept of "elimination communication" as one author named it.
      For me and my babies it really has been two way communication. As newborns, my babies had a distinct cry that indicated the need to eliminate. Before becoming a mother, when I would babysit, I thought babies only cried at the discomfort of being wet. I didn't realize they could vocalize before eliminating. Just as a baby can use sounds or gestures to indicate hunger or tiredness, they can do they same with the need to eliminate. As a society we have forgotten this, so we tend not to notice.
      Babies can also have sphincter control from very early. Many of us who practice EC are well aware of this. Just because a text book says that toddlers don't have sphincter control until a certain age does not make that statement true. This misconception comes from diapering babies and losing our own awareness of their bodily functions.
      There was a time before disposable diapers (less than 100 years ago), and a time before cloth diapers. And some people to this day do not have access to either. But they manage to care for their babies in a clean and hygienic way, none the less.
      When I make videos it is never to tell other people that they should do EC or should cloth diaper. My intention is only to provide helpful tips to those who would like to.
      Our babies are intelligent little beings, who also share the natural instincts of many other mamals, such as not wanting to soil their caregiver or sleeping place.
      Through practicing EC my aim is to respond to my baby and care for him in a hygienic manner. This will gradually lead towards potty independence, which may be around 18-24M, but only time will tell.
      And it's plenty warm where we were living in Hawaii, on a hot dry side of Oahu! 💜 Heidi

      Completely agree, my 3 were all potty trained day and night, by 14 months old. No pressure, just waited till they recognised the signs of a full bladder, and understood that. Babies are babies, love and nurture them.

      I started doing EC with my first when she was 4 months old. By the time she was 9 1/2 months old she was walking and coming to me to let me know she needed to pee or poo. So, it IS POSSIBLE for babies under 18 months to control their bladder, or at the very least signal that they need to go. The goal is not to be a better parent, but do you really need to use diapers while at home? If you are not out and about and you can be present to your child's needs... why not give it a try?

      i just came here to say you sound like a very unpleasant person and the way she responded with such respect and kindness was definitely NOT how i would’ve responded to your rude, and might i add, UNEDUCATED reply. don’t have a good day:)

      Man… another completely ignorant comment, very disappointing. There’s an EC lady here on TH-cam who’s had 5 children, all of them out of daytime diapers consistently by 17 months (17 months was the longest child).
      This comment simply feels like an opportunity to project your own egocentricism onto someone discussing a topic you made NO effort to investigate before making character assassinations. Suggesting this lady is trying to be better than others… this feels very adolescent. YOU are inferring she is about her ego and not loving for the child, thereby putting YOURSELF on the moral high ground when all this lady is doing is sharing her process… Such arrogance, telling a stranger how to live and care for their child. What EXACTLY is this woman doing that makes you think she’s putting her ego first? Look in the mirror and ask yourself what is at the core of such unfounded reactivity in yourself.
      Make an effort to research EC before attacking someone’s character, and maybe learn about psychological projection as well. For goodness sake, unbelievably immature behaviour. Disappointing from an adult.

      It's actually the approach many non western countries take... there was a time before nappies existed you know

      Another fad? What? Disposable nappies were a fad that they struggled to sell upon first release because mothers were doing fine with cloth diapers and intuiting when baby needs to go (what EC is). What exactly is crazy about this?
