Yes, it's true... But also many sections on this video there's a simplified version from multiples of 4, you can check 'official' transcriptions and the MP count sheet. Here on YT, search for: "The odd time signatures of The Dance of Eternity"
Its not that bad...its a feel thihg, and its mostly adding an extra note in or taking one out. Its not like you're thinking 4/4, 5/8, 4/4, 6/8, 17/8, 9/8 etc...learn the notes, then stick em in
@@rickfeith6372 Best way is to ignore those time changes and just practice/play along to the track. If you're too aware of them it can start to mess with your brain.
I'm learning it at the moment. Not going to lie to you, it's bloody hard, but it is achievable. Like many things in music it's about developing muscle memory, so you need to just play sections over and over again. Have a go.
Its a feel thing...you would lose the groove trying to count the whole thing and play it. Alt picking does the counting for you in a lot of parts, some parts are definitely counting the down beat though. Play LOTS of Dream Theater tunes along with the record and you'll get it...the hardest thing about Dance is the unique shapes of the left hand, not the timing. Its not as impossible as you'd think. Even I struggled to count this. 😜
So, I had to cover this song for a school show, and while I didnt nail it 100% I did do a very tight cover I think. My advice for the song is, well, not counting at all the 10/16 and 17/16 and similar 16 parts, they have all only 16th notes in them so you just play the riff until you run out of notes (you go through every single tone) and then you go to next riff. 4/4 to 7/8 to 6/4 is countable, the main spike here is that 7/8 and you have to play that one by feel (since weird chord durations). Djenty part is not a hard one and solo is similar to x/16 riff parts, play notes until you run out of them. It is a hard and mindfucking song, but there are harder
I came across this video as I was resurrecting my rig to start playing again after a 15 year hiatus. Video is now over, and there went THAT idea... 🤣 ...seriously, a fanastic job, man! Your playing is killer! 👍🏻
it sucks that your channel has so little exposure.... very good video, very nice playing, good guitar tone and mix. nothing not good enough to mention really. put out more videos if you can. we would love to see them!
Wirandika M. H. For complex definitely, but I think if you want to practice feeling odd times Dream Theater isn't the place to start. Great for practice once you get your head wrapped around it lol
I wonder of Mike Oldfield's Amarok is as complex, time signature wise. It's easily 10x or more so instrumentally (number), melodically, and almost time-wise (59 min). If you're not a Mike Oldfield fan, check him out. He's more than just "Theme from the Exorcist."
At 2:53, There is a slide from 15 to 17 fret which is to be taken from the pinky finger, but instead, he is playing the 17 fret straight away. I think, that there is some editing done, but still, I appreciate the playing.
Parabéns!!! Muito bom!!! amigo, sou baterista e também gravei essa música. Estou procurando músicos para fazer um vídeo Split Screen. O que você acha, vamos fazer?
Because of their egos. They want to show their musical prodigy, not to write simple and listenable song for general population. Have you ever noticed; every time they come with new songs, they are getting more complicated and harder for an average guitar player. This guy can play John’s pieces, he is considered top of the ladder already, except he probably doesn’t have enough money or sponsorship to get him out to people. I bet he is already in a local band making fame for himself. TH-cam is another way to get his message to the world without having large sponsors.
@@jaidenxiong9996 that’s some bullshit. Ever thought they just make music they like? Maybe not everyone wants to spoon fed songs that pander to as many people as possible. Bands fill their own niches and play what they want to. Not shitting on basic music just saying

Song: With lyrics
Dance of Eternity: with time signatures!
yeah they are two different things
a song is a song
the dance of eternity is a prog
Guitarrist: Hey here is the new song i wrote.
Drummer: Fk...
This song is way harder on guitar than drums tho, more like the keyboard player
yup...i was trying to play it yesterday...the starting was good...but when it reaches the trills you can be sure only master guitarists can play that

Let's say that not having a 7 string guitar stops me from playing this
and also not having 24 frets. Its all the gears' fault man!
In my case it's my fault knowing how to play only not even half of the song.. 😅
my guitar doesn't have a whammy bar, that's the reason i can't play this song
Yeeppp and 24 frets
like d way you pick....ur right hand look very relaxed....
i was thinking the same! Love it
Economy picking ?
Though I bet his left hand feels like it's been "dancing for an eternity"
That's what its for, just use your wrist calmly to pick, moving too much is just too much, hurts and not good.
Holy shit. This song has 118 time changes...
Wonder if its the “ most changing song in the world “ ? Like world record ?

That piano bit always cracks me up! But seriously this was an insane cover! I covered overture 1928 if you fancy watching it
+1 sub for you bro
I think seeing the time signature makes the song even more daunting to me.
Epic achievement there, total respect for the hours of work that must have been committed to getting that down.
Ultimately it's more like years rather than hours lol
I never would have thought there would be this much 4/4
you can make even 4/4 complex if you want.
Needs more 5/8 if you ask me.
