Absolutely brilliant video, just love every bit of it, funny, well filmed, music, well written, just makes me want to go and climb the madone ! Brilliant video, cheers
i did this on a bmc aluminium. 1. a piece of advice - dont follow google maps from Menton. It will dessert you mid way. I climbed 600m following it and coming down as there way no route at all for road bike atleast. 2. dont forget to visit St. Agnes - a small village on the way to Madone, with stunning views. There are few restraunts and a fort as well.
Mum in law has an apartment in Menton. Lucky enough to ride here a couple of weeks a year. Usually start out on the D23 myself as opposed to the D22. Some great cycling when you get up out of town.
Having done this last year I wish the sun was up when I went. I'm from TORONTO,CANADA where there is 0 climbs that will truly test you and the La Madone was my first "real" mountain climb (well, I had climb D'Eze 2 days prior but the CDLM really kicked my butt). Great experience. I remember being scared because of the narrow roads and cars/trucks were heading my way. I literally had to squeeze in.
Great to see that Simon has at least some variation in the color scheme of his bike. I just hate those all black bikes, which seem to be almost the only ones you see these days...
Evening Gents! I climbed the Madone a few years ago with my mate Kev... We both wore yellow Team Discovery jerseys: little did we know! It is a lovely climb; never too steep,.. Unfortunately we continued on a couple more climbs in direction of La Turbie & were wrecked by the time we got back to Nice.. 2 questions for you.. 1) did you hear somebody nicked the sign at the top & has it on their bedroom wall? 2) what time did it take you guys to get to the top? I think we did it in 43 mins...
Will there be a indoor session with the madone. Your last video with Dan in Mallorca cycling up the Sa Colobra is one of my favourites. Would be great to see a new one like this. Though the season is approaching very fast.
110,000+ views and 1,112 likes to only 1 dislike...undoubtedly the video with the highest ratio of like:dislike I've ever seen (out of 1,000's of TH-cam videos watched)...good job GCN!
I hope you get proper lends of sponsors bikes so you can review them properly. GCN should be regarded as a major cycling news outpost just like the magazines
Did this climb with a mate three weeks ago, it was pretty hard work as it's not an even gradient and kicks up near the end - quite nasty. Also we picked one of the warmest and most humid days of the summer to do it (!!). Recommended though. Hopefully do it again on a cooler day with better visibility, the views are superb.
I climbed it alone from Nice>La Turbie and now I'm preparing to do it tomorrow from Menton. Good thing I did it that way the first time because on the descent to Menton I stopped like 10+ times to take pictures. The view is trully amazing.
Hi yes we came down the La Turbie side, not sure which is steeper to be honest. Good luck with the climb. We had to detour to St Agnes for water as there's none available on the road up.
Froome describes start that seems to be the bus station Pescaire (it is on the left, not on the right) and behind the one you say it is that of team Sky.
I rode this last October in unseasonal rain so all I could see from the top was grey cloud - the descent to La Turbie was bitterly cold as there seems to be more wind on the other side. Still a great climb though.
The descent to La Turbie is nicer and more open and a good option if headed in Nice direction. Also as the boys suggest you can extend the ride. The Intermarche route shown in the video is the classic one but I also like the approach of Madone from the east end of Menton Promenade. You can see the descent here even if my GPS missed out the important bit - the climb ! www.strava.com/activities/236343050
As it happens kwacker45, we did! And you're right, it's extremely narrow in places so you have to take things cautiously: th-cam.com/video/FZg3PJuCjAI/w-d-xo.html
Global Cycling Network You'd climb 1200 m in 6 km (average gradient 20 %). The sign at the start infamously warns of 45 % gradients... I'm not aware of a harder climb anywhere in the world.
I had a question I am 17 years old and what gear do you reccommend for this climb when doing a race because I am doing the race the 8th of march and I have in the back 24-14 and in the small ring 34 or 39 what small ring do you recommend ?
What was that, at start, he was gonna get the bus up', with his (bus) pass ?? ;) never mind looking shifty at someones gate lol - so now we know, you've gotta stop every so often for the owld fella in the bunch LMAO... - sorry Matt...
it seems like a nice climb but also very dangerous, there is barely any space for two cars and I don't want to imagine what would happen if a driver don't look in the curves.
Could you do a review on a really cheap road bike? Need one for my 8 mile commute to work. Don't want to trash my pride and joy. Like the ones from halfords sub £200. Cheers and regards...farter. X
Hi GCN i live at the base of the Col du Holme Moss (tdf stage 2 fame), i was wondering is there any comparison between my local climb and the col de la madone in terms of severity of gradient ? i would love to climb the madone in the future, would any special training be required to get up in one piece.
The gradient is fairly comparable, but it's the length of course that is the big difference. In terms of training for a climb such as the Madone, doing one or two 30 minute 'sweetspot' efforts on your training ride will do you the world of good. Maybe time it so that you finish the 30 minute effort up Holme Moss, so that you simulate the climbing as well?
We shall add this to the spreadsheet of names and places that the guys have mis-pronounced. Now, let me see, ah yes we'll put it at the bottom here on page 42.... Glad you enjoyed the vid Lll Louis
Dear GCN You do a lot of silly competition agent yourself and thought but you never have competition with any youth rider is it because your scared you will lose ?
I was this year riding in the hills behind Nice, France and I was absolutely amazed by how beautiful this piece of Earth is. Have to ride there again.
Such beauty in Europe

Menton was where we stayed that whole week, absolutely stunning place.
Outtakes at the end of this a pure gold haha. Riding the Madone in 3 days, so excited :D
How did you go?

Getting 8 inches of snow in Ohio right now. Living vicariously through GCN. Love the videos! Looks like great fun.
Thanks Mark - hope the snow melts for you soon!
Global Cycling Network I love the fact that you plan the final sprint for the line without telling Matt. :)
Great to see that Simon has at least some variation in the color scheme of his bike. I just hate those all black bikes, which seem to be almost the only ones you see these days...
Dan 'The Bus!' Lloyd
Don't let Dan hear you repeat that, he get's quite upset about it.

I really appreciated Lasty's words. His suggestions leaves you speechless!
Have you never climbed or filmed the Bealach Na Baa in Scotland? Truly iconic and on our doorstep so more realistic to accomplish for UK viewers! 👌☺️
Lovely weather, a great climb and lucky to do it all with your mates and look forward to a beer at the end! What a trip!
More videos like this please
Great job as usual gcn ! Would it be possible to put links for the songs we heard during the video ?

Looks a great ride. Would have liked to have seen Tom given the chance to say something.
you should climb Dalsnibba in Geiranger Norway. 21 km long, avrage percent is 8.
I hope you get proper lends of sponsors bikes so you can review them properly. GCN should be regarded as a major cycling news outpost just like the magazines
Absolutely beautiful thank you.
...and playing the part of Marcel Marceau, Tom Last!

Definite squad goals
Poor Matt. Maybe they can get him an 11-32 for his birthday?
The only 11 you'd see Matt using these days would be on a chainring.
(only joking Matt).
Global Cycling Network And a pair of Speedplays... ;)
More like a 52 on the back

Did you film decent, looked pretty scary to me very very technical. Was traffic, especially on the really narrow stretches an issue?. Great vid

Trek Madonne rules
This is one of my dream rides. What cassette ratio were you guys running?
Some had an 11-25, others an 11-28.
Cool video. I like these!
Lance's climb
Last ten seconds are great. What age do GCN presenters need to retire?
Very nice
Tom last isn't last for this climb yay!!! :)
Awesome video as always!
What is the music in the beginning?
Very very good❤
I Think Tom Last didn't saying anything so he had enough breath to beat everyone on the top of the climb!
Do the Scanuppia in Italy. If you can make it up that I'll be seriously impressed.
Interesting - will we need a granny ring?!
Global Cycling Network You'd climb 1200 m in 6 km (average gradient 20 %). The sign at the start infamously warns of 45 % gradients... I'm not aware of a harder climb anywhere in the world.
***** That just sounds ridiculous!
We need Lasty to show us how to climb it :))
Dan, you haven´t said Cervélo TestTeam for ages. What´s going on? Did you forget? :-)
Hmmm, I think you're right - I will make sure I get it in a few times soon.
Dan
Awesome video GCN, loved it :)
Why Tom no talk T_T
nice video! what is the total distance from the supermarket/bus stop to the top?
It's about 13km - here's the Strava segment:
www.strava.com/segments/col-de-la-madone-via-menton-2363?hl=en-GB
Global Cycling Network thanks GCN!
Phaidrus pleasure!
Why not do a climb more close to home like. The Great Den Fell in the UK Pennines is a good tough ascent!?
What was the gearing that you had on the bikes?
So what time did you guys cover?
Can you please climb the Col du Galibier!
Hmmm, sounds a bit hard that one.
Dan
I did this last week and melted in the heat.
I had a question I am 17 years old and what gear do you reccommend for this climb when doing a race because I am doing the race the 8th of march and I have in the back 24-14 and in the small ring 34 or 39 what small ring do you recommend ?
what's the tune playing at the start of the video?
Awesome video fellows!!
What was your times??
so GCN crew time? :D
Name of the music at the beginning?
GCN team should complete in pro cycling team!
What, and kill the illusion that they are good at riding bikes?!
do some UK climbs!
I do wonder if Dom_Estique was pulling the guys up the hill? Seems to be pulling his weight in the caption comps. Puts Dan Lloyd to shame!
Hi, what is the song called in the beginning. Please let us know...
What was that, at start, he was gonna get the bus up', with his (bus) pass ?? ;) never mind looking shifty at someones gate lol - so now we know, you've gotta stop every so often for the owld fella in the bunch LMAO... - sorry Matt...
What helmet are you guys using?
it seems like a nice climb but also very dangerous, there is barely any space for two cars and I don't want to imagine what would happen if a driver don't look in the curves.
How many bikes does Simon has?
Could you do a review on a really cheap road bike? Need one for my 8 mile commute to work. Don't want to trash my pride and joy. Like the ones from halfords sub £200. Cheers and regards...farter. X
We don't tend to do reviews I'm afraid.
Global Cycling Network interesting.
please just once
What the brand of helmet you guys were all using here - they weren't your usual KASK
Alex Knight these ones are from Scott.
do this climb with a tabdem bike matt and si vs the other 2
Why is this taken down

***** one can only offer again my apologies and my explanation that i wasn't being sexist, but if you won't accept it then whatever.
col très difficile qui part de Menton ALT 0 pour arriver au sommêt à 960 m d'altitude en 13 à 14 kms
Good effort however 4's a crowd somehow
please add the English subtitles...
Does the 4th guy have no voice? He didn't say anything!
Just asked Tom about this, he says 'no comment'.
Daniel Lloyd tom as always with all his presenter's charism....too bad Last did not use his stripped socks from the tour of dubai
i wish i have those GCN kit. im on a third world country tho. :)
Why's Simon on the scott? He's so beautiful also.thanks
Gary Morris gay Morris
The best part of climbing any mountain is the trip back down the other side when you reach the top......
so what's Dans website called
Its pronounced Sainte agneS not agne . Anyway this is a really entertaining vid
We shall add this to the spreadsheet of names and places that the guys have mis-pronounced.
Now, let me see, ah yes we'll put it at the bottom here on page 42....
Glad you enjoyed the vid Lll Louis
Ugg.... a continuous climb. Sounds awful, even if it isn't too steep.
First!
Dear GCN
You do a lot of silly competition agent yourself and thought but you never have competition with any youth rider is it because your scared you will lose ?
Yes, that's exactly why we don't compete against kids.
