Great video and explanation of the pros, cons, and current issues. I do like this mode for cruising, maybe angle mode flying, but not proximity freestyle. Makes you slow down when flying which is kind of a good thing if you want to be smooth for video capture

Nice work...we are all in the whirlwind of so many options...wish I could afford all the different system. If you could only choose one; dji, walksnl, hd0...which would you choose?
Tough question, at times I wish HDzero’s image quality was better, but then I try other systems and miss the consistent image resolution and latency… Now full disclosure, I haven’t spend much time flying DJI, and have not used the O3 system yet, so I can’t really give a fair opinion here. However for my type of flying in the mountains I’d take HDZero over WalkSnail every time. In this extreme flying environment consistent reliability is far more important than image quality, and also this new 1080p mode has really narrowed that image quality gap. So the answer really depends on your flight style and uses, but hope that provides some insight. Appreciate the comment, stay tuned!
I really think you have to try them in person and see. I for example am super latency sensitive and really struggle flying most of the systems. I struggled on DJI a bit then O3, and now I’m just on mostly HDZero (finally happy!!!) with a bit of Avatar (meh, at least it’s pretty 😜). Funny example today, I was flying some long range on Avatar and when I switched to my proximity freestyle HDZero setup I had to check the focus on my lens 😂 I thought it was very out of focus 😂 it tripped me up… it wasn’t the case obviously, it’s just much lower fidelity 🙄 but the thing with O3, DJI OG and Avatar; it’s like watching a picture show to me, beautiful pictures but way too much like a flip book 😂 Avatar is by far the fastest of the bunch, and I still struggle with it! 😜 HDZero on the other had looks perfectly smooth and fluid for me, even the 720p60, it’s great! I really do love the 540p90 though! I just fly soooo much better on this system it’s not even a comparison! I fly WAY better on HDZero than on analog too, because for some reason I’m also super sensitive to the analog flashes, and get super disoriented. HDZero breakup I don’t even notice while flying for some reason, after the fact while watching DVR it amazes me that it didn’t bother me. But while flying it doesn’t bother me one bit. Having said this, I hope you understand why I think that you should actually fly it in person. You may have a fast brain, or you might really enjoy the fidelity of O3… at least we have choice! That’s the real win! I hope you find what you are looking for! Best of luck on this adventure!

Interesting that HDZ's range/breakup seems to correlate with framerate, as some people seem to get more range with the 90Hz camera than with the standart 60Hz and you are getting less than normal at 30Hz.
Yea, I’m not an expert but know smaller packets transmit better. I believe the 540p90 packets are slightly smaller than 720p60 and 1080p30 are slightly bigger. BUT that’s just a guess. I know there’s a 540p60 mode that’s supposed to have improve range and penetration because it’s transmitting less data. I’ll try to get a better answer for my next update. Thanks man, appreciate the comment. Now I don’t actually expect the image to be as good as WalkSnail, because WS looks incredible when it’s working well. However when we fly fast or when signal gets less than perfect WS starts to fall apart, and I’m curious from a average image quality stand point how close HDZero 1080p30 will be. So it’ll be interesting, I’ve already done some initial tests but it’ll take a few more tests to make any real conclusions. Cheers!
Yea, the image quality isn’t too far off, and as I just mentioned in the comment above, it’ll be interesting to see under what conditions (fast flying, signal quality) HDZero actually matches or exceeds WS’s image quality. @zuldanfpv4634 For my the fixed resolution and latency are preferred, but WS can and does look really really good. So it’ll be interesting, stay tuned.
Hi! Thanks for this video! It's very nice work. The SFX are quite a great touch, it's inspiring and I kind of want to try to do it too as an experiment in DaVinci Resolve. As a developper, I don't think packet size is an issue here. You still might be right and they could have changed the packet size and destabilized the whole protocol but that's not what a developper would normally instinctually do, we don't touch the (already working) communication protocol layer at all when we want to change the contents of data we transfer. Packet size is probably standard and probably didn't change. It should be streaming more data to build 1 frame, that's for sure, more packets overall is to be expected.
Thanks appreciate you noticing the editing efforts that went into this video; nice when an idea works out. Regarding the packets, you’re probably right, but it’s beyond my knowledge scope. HDZero unfortunately has been so focused on Analog performance that this 1080p mode has been sidelined. My ultimate goal is to make ‘quality episodes’ that are both fun and interesting. Honesty my channel would grow much quicker if I just spewed out basic videos more often… and I do actually try to make them simpler but I just can’t publish them until they meets whatever vision I had in the first place. great edit man! I think the details in the low and highlights is better and show whiter because it's a bigger lens letting in more light to the image sensor. The RF breakup is still being tuned, it's a known issue and Carl and his team are working on it. Lastly, That was some AMAZINGLY skilled racing footage you had cut in there BTW 😉
Thanks man! So actually in these tests both 720 and 1080 had the same lens, but 30fps would let in more light than 60fps which would explain it! Any improvement in the RF breakup and stutter would be great, like this could be a really huge step for HDZero for a broader market. That racer is a mad man, I think you two would get along well! Great video!. I have a question Tho. After changing the lens on the camera for 1080p mode. if you switch back to 720p mode with out the lens change will the camera still work? Or will there be Problems?
Good question, and actually the new lens works great for 720p mode. In fact all of the 720p comparison footage was shot using the new lens. Yeah but 30 fps is only good for cinema or cinema footage from drones. Sports and freestyle you need 50/60 fps minimum. Also Analog is 60 fps even if it is deinterlaced to p30. You habe in analog the moving video infomation of i60 insinde the p30...
Yup making quick movements at a lower framerate results in too much motion blur. Flying fast in a straight line is no problem, I just came in from a flight and I was flying 100kph+ (60mph) down a mountain in between trees, what a rush! The 1080p30 of course didn’t feel as smooth but did allow me to see tree branches better, so it’s a trade off but can work well. Thanks for watching and providing your thoughts, cheers!

Alternatively TrueRC X2-Airs work well and I’ll be testing some new VAS antennas soon, just waiting for them to arrive. But of course all these options cost way more than $10! Nice video! Do you by chance now if the 1080p30 mode is supported by the Fatshark Scout HD goggle? Hdzero does provide updated firmware for it on their website and the screen is 1080p so it should be possible unless the internal receiver lacks something?
Well, I don’t know for sure. However, since they are 1080p displays it certainly seems possible! The receiver should be perfectly capable of receiving 1080p30, my main concern would be the display’s “refresh rate”, similar to the issue the HDZero Goggles are having. I don’t know if it uses less band honestly, but don’t think the penetration is better. I’ll try to run some new tests, but in these tests flights the 1080p penetration actually seemed worse. I had to dig deep to figure this out just now. Nothing is ever obvious but you are correct, there is a 1.66mm and a 2.1mm lensc but also it looks like Caddx had two versions of the the 2.1mm, and I have the newer version of the 2.1mm. Albert Kim talks about the one I have in this video: th-cam.com/video/1f6FqGMj7f4/w-d-xo.html So it’s possible the 1.66mm version might work, but there’s other variables of course. Very creative to use your wall art as a place to drop video and info! About the refresh rate mismatch. Couldn't they just run the display at 60 and do frame doubling? Seems like a pretty easy solution, but perhaps that runs against the grain of the core method of how such a system works. As for the brightness, I bet the camera is able to grab more light per frame due to having a doubled timeframe with which to work with. I recall the 540p90 mode looking rather dim and muddy by comparison. As always, it's great to see your testing and insights into stuff, and you're still pulling off some great shots!

Regarding 30fps at 60Hz, I recently asked this very question to the team, but haven’t heard a response yet. Seems like an obvious solution, but maybe there’s a reason it won’t work. Fingers crossed they can fix it. I think your 100% right about the amount of light getting to the sensor at 30fps. I mean we see this when filming and editing normal video of course. I fell so stupid. But I have a reason… I’m fairly new to this hobby. I have the hdzero goggle and hdzero race 3 vtx with the mini 90 camera. I have no idea where to select this 1080 mode?
Don’t worry it’s not user error; the Nano 90 camera doesn’t have the 1080p30 option, and the cameras that can do 1080p30 can’t do 90fps. They use different sensors, each with unique abilities. The Nano 90 is great, but if you want the best image quality check out the new Micro V3 or Nano V3 cameras. Here’s a short video I did about the Micro V3, it looks great. Actually the Nano V3 does 720p (4:3 & 16:9) & 1080p30 (16:9). I was just doing some testing with it today actually. I try to share the results soon. To access the camera setting you have to have MSP (for OSD) enabled in BF, the you push and hold the “Yaw Stick” to the right. This should open the Camera Menu. Similarly, If you push both sticks down & to the center you’ll access the VTX menu. Hope that’s makes sense.
What's about the Cobra X googles ? They are 1080p capable for VRX use, not only the HDZERO googles like you said. We will really love use 1080p in yours googles.
If they have 1080p displays then it’s possible, I haven’t heard if the VRX will support this mode. I think it can, but I’m not sure at the moment. I’ll try to find out, so stay tuned. Thanks for watching!

So what's stopping them from doing this at 60fps? Is it the bandwidth required to send an uncompressed video stream? If so, do you think it would make sense to have an HDZero equivalent of 50mbps mode or is the bottleneck somewhere else?
Yup, it’s a bandwidth or packet rate issue. I don’t know the exact technical limitations to be honest, but you can have - Higher Frames with Lower Resolution, - Higher Resolution with Lower Frames, or even - Higher Range/Penetration with lower Frames and Resolution. (They’re working on this mode now)
@@GiantAntCowboy It's a limitation of the chipset. Bitrate tops out around 8-10mbps at 1080/30, with 720/60 coming out just below that. Not sure about the 90fps mode but it will probably be around that region.

@@eatyourvegfpv yea, I just said the same to my wife: “I’m getting better, but this guy’s videos are my goal, just look at his story telling abilities…” it’s all about finding inspiration and improving your personal skills. Regarding computers I picked up a Mac Mini M1 earlier this year, relatively inexpensive for the performance. Of course it assumes you have a monitor, and other peripherals. Another suggestion I’d make is get yourself some Samsung T7 SSDs or similar. Footage and edits take up tons of space… I actually store all my footage on one and do all my editing on the other. I always enjoy your videos and look forward to watching your evolution!
I actually show what the Caddx Ratel lens looks like in this video, in the “What’s Required” section, and it has some vignetting. However Caddx Ratel cameras actually had 3 different lens versions. A 1.6mm and two slightly different 2.1mm lens. The 1.6mm lens might work better… but idk. RC5L and Caddx Polar 1.6 lenses are good options.
@@StringbeanFPV you have to update both the Goggle and VTX firmware to the latest versions. Then you have to access the Camera Menu by pushing and holding the Yaw stick to the right. The option is near the bottom, should be able to chose 16:9full, crop, 4:3, and 1080p30. Hope that makes sense.
It is going to be very disappointing if this doesn't come out for the VRX at the same time. I am sure there are many people who want to use this mode with monitors (not googles) which would have no problem supporting this mode.
As far as I know the VRX is capable of both receiving and outputting 1080p video, so it should be possible, but I haven’t heard anything official yet. I’ll see if I can find anything out, thanks for watching and stay tuned. Cheers!

The thing that worries me is knowing the current goggle 50hz frame rate issue, why wouldn't they have released the VRX firmware to Ryan Quellet and people like yourself first to test and review (on capable 720/1080p30 devices) for people to get a better appreciation... Showing off 30p on 50hz goggle playback doesn't seem like a very smart marketing move to me.
@@chrisbacik6535 well, first I’m not sure why they used 50hz. It seems 60hz would display 30fps without issue, still waiting for this answer. I can say that this 1080p30 mode hasn’t been a priority because all resources and focus has been on getting the goggle design finalized, produced, and optimizing the firmware. This was a huge task and honestly HDZero isn’t a huge company. Many people are simply volunteers… Carl has spent every waking moment of his life trying to make this a success as he’s gambled everything on this company, which supports a super niche product. Lol/ugh! But the evolution over this last year has been incredible. I personally have wished and asked for this mode for months, but HDZero’s core users are FPV race pilots; so I’m just happy to see it here at all, even in its current form. Kind of a long rant, but I just started typing. So we’ll just have to see what updates we get in the next couple weeks. I’ll do a follow up video whenever I have something worth sharing. Soon I think, hoping they can fix the issues i mentioned here, but even in its current state I think a lot of people would still use it. The 1080p examples look terrible there's way more breakup. I'm so glad I ditched HDzero for DJI and the O3 air units it's absolutely amazing flying with it.

Like two 720p60 images mixed together to make a 1080p30 image? Or the image is being stretched? I believe the camera is now simply using the whole sensor to capture 1080p, which is why we need the wider lens, and why only V2 cameras will work for this mode. great edit man! I think the details in the low and highlights is better and show whiter because it's a bigger lens letting in more light to the image sensor. The RF breakup is still being tuned, it's a known issue and Carl and his team are working on it. Lastly, That was some AMAZINGLY skilled racing footage you had cut in there BTW 😉
Thanks man! So actually in these tests both 720 and 1080 had the same lens, but 30fps would let in more light than 60fps which would explain it!
Any improvement in the RF breakup and stutter would be great, like this could be a really huge step for HDZero for a broader market.

Great video!. I have a question Tho. After changing the lens on the camera for 1080p mode. if you switch back to 720p mode with out the lens change will the camera still work? Or will there be Problems?
Good question, and actually the new lens works great for 720p mode. In fact all of the 720p comparison footage was shot using the new lens. Works good in both 720Full and 4:3 modes, (720crop is pointless with it).

Yeah but 30 fps is only good for cinema or cinema footage from drones. Sports and freestyle you need 50/60 fps minimum. Also Analog is 60 fps even if it is deinterlaced to p30. You habe in analog the moving video infomation of i60 insinde the p30...
Yup making quick movements at a lower framerate results in too much motion blur. Flying fast in a straight line is no problem, I just came in from a flight and I was flying 100kph+ (60mph) down a mountain in between trees, what a rush!
The 1080p30 of course didn’t feel as smooth but did allow me to see tree branches better, so it’s a trade off but can work well. Thanks for watching and providing your thoughts, cheers!

It basically shows how you can take HDZero 7km+ (4 miles) with $10 worth of DIY antennas. Alternatively TrueRC X2-Airs work well and I’ll be testing some new VAS antennas soon, just waiting for them to arrive.
But of course all these options cost way more than $10! In the linked video I include my DIY tutorial as well; if you can solder you can make them.

Nice video! Do you by chance now if the 1080p30 mode is supported by the Fatshark Scout HD goggle? Hdzero does provide updated firmware for it on their website and the screen is 1080p so it should be possible unless the internal receiver lacks something?
Well, I don’t know for sure. However, since they are 1080p displays it certainly seems possible! The receiver should be perfectly capable of receiving 1080p30, my main concern would be the display’s “refresh rate”, similar to the issue the HDZero Goggles are having.

It appears to use less band than 720p60. Is the penetration better?
I don’t know if it uses less band honestly, but don’t think the penetration is better. I’ll try to run some new tests, but in these tests flights the 1080p penetration actually seemed worse.
I’m testing the new firmware now, which seems to have really improved the stutter and RF issues I mention in this video.

I believe the VRX should be capable of receiving and even outputting the 1080p30, however you’d need a goggle or display that can display 1080p30.

The Ratel v1 lens that was tested: was it the 2.1mm version or the 1.66mm? The camera was sold with both options at the time if I remember correctly.
I had to dig deep to figure this out just now. Nothing is ever obvious but you are correct, there is a 1.66mm and a 2.1mm lensc but also it looks like Caddx had two versions of the the 2.1mm, and I have the newer version of the 2.1mm.

So it’s possible the 1.66mm version might work, but there’s other variables of course.

About the refresh rate mismatch. Couldn't they just run the display at 60 and do frame doubling? Seems like a pretty easy solution, but perhaps that runs against the grain of the core method of how such a system works.
As for the brightness, I bet the camera is able to grab more light per frame due to having a doubled timeframe with which to work with. I recall the 540p90 mode looking rather dim and muddy by comparison.
As always, it's great to see your testing and insights into stuff, and you're still pulling off some great shots!

Regarding 30fps at 60Hz, I recently asked this very question to the team, but haven’t heard a response yet. Seems like an obvious solution, but maybe there’s a reason it won’t work. Fingers crossed they can fix it.
I think your 100% right about the amount of light getting to the sensor at 30fps. I mean we see this when filming and editing normal video of course.

I fell so stupid. But I have a reason… I’m fairly new to this hobby. I have the hdzero goggle and hdzero race 3 vtx with the mini 90 camera. I have no idea where to select this 1080 mode?
Don’t worry it’s not user error; the Nano 90 camera doesn’t have the 1080p30 option, and the cameras that can do 1080p30 can’t do 90fps.
They use different sensors, each with unique abilities. The Nano 90 is great, but if you want the best image quality check out the new Micro V3 or Nano V3 cameras.

Actually the Nano V3 does 720p (4:3 & 16:9) & 1080p30 (16:9). I was just doing some testing with it today actually. I try to share the results soon.
To access the camera setting you have to have MSP (for OSD) enabled in BF, the you push and hold the “Yaw Stick” to the right. This should open the Camera Menu.
Similarly, If you push both sticks down & to the center you’ll access the VTX menu.
Hope that’s makes sense.

So what's stopping them from doing this at 60fps? Is it the bandwidth required to send an uncompressed video stream? If so, do you think it would make sense to have an HDZero equivalent of 50mbps mode or is the bottleneck somewhere else?
Yup, it’s a bandwidth or packet rate issue. I don’t know the exact technical limitations to be honest, but you can have
- Higher Frames with Lower Resolution,
- Higher Resolution with Lower Frames, or even
- Higher Range/Penetration with lower Frames and Resolution. (They’re working on this mode now)
@@GiantAntCowboy It's a limitation of the chipset. Bitrate tops out around 8-10mbps at 1080/30, with 720/60 coming out just below that. Not sure about the 90fps mode but it will probably be around that region.

Regarding computers I picked up a Mac Mini M1 earlier this year, relatively inexpensive for the performance. Of course it assumes you have a monitor, and other peripherals.
Another suggestion I’d make is get yourself some Samsung T7 SSDs or similar. Footage and edits take up tons of space… I actually store all my footage on one and do all my editing on the other.
I always enjoy your videos and look forward to watching your evolution!
Do you think the caddx rattle lense work?
I actually show what the Caddx Ratel lens looks like in this video, in the “What’s Required” section, and it has some vignetting.
However Caddx Ratel cameras actually had 3 different lens versions. A 1.6mm and two slightly different 2.1mm lens. The 1.6mm lens might work better… but idk.
RC5L and Caddx Polar 1.6 lenses are good options.

@@StringbeanFPV you have to update both the Goggle and VTX firmware to the latest versions. Then you have to access the Camera Menu by pushing and holding the Yaw stick to the right. The option is near the bottom, should be able to chose 16:9full, crop, 4:3, and 1080p30.

It is going to be very disappointing if this doesn't come out for the VRX at the same time. I am sure there are many people who want to use this mode with monitors (not googles) which would have no problem supporting this mode.

The thing that worries me is knowing the current goggle 50hz frame rate issue, why wouldn't they have released the VRX firmware to Ryan Quellet and people like yourself first to test and review (on capable 720/1080p30 devices) for people to get a better appreciation... Showing off 30p on 50hz goggle playback doesn't seem like a very smart marketing move to me.
@@chrisbacik6535 well, first I’m not sure why they used 50hz. It seems 60hz would display 30fps without issue, still waiting for this answer. I can say that this 1080p30 mode hasn’t been a priority because all resources and focus has been on getting the goggle design finalized, produced, and optimizing the firmware. This was a huge task and honestly HDZero isn’t a huge company. Many people are simply volunteers… Carl has spent every waking moment of his life trying to make this a success as he’s gambled everything on this company, which supports a super niche product. Lol/ugh! But the evolution over this last year has been incredible.
I personally have wished and asked for this mode for months, but HDZero’s core users are FPV race pilots; so I’m just happy to see it here at all, even in its current form. Kind of a long rant, but I just started typing. So we’ll just have to see what updates we get in the next couple weeks. I’ll do a follow up video whenever I have something worth sharing. The 1080p examples look terrible there's way more breakup. I'm so glad I ditched HDzero for DJI and the O3 air units it's absolutely amazing flying with it.

1080p on HDzero looks like interpolation of 720p
Like two 720p60 images mixed together to make a 1080p30 image? Or the image is being stretched?
I believe the camera is now simply using the whole sensor to capture 1080p, which is why we need the wider lens, and why only V2 cameras will work for this mode.

@@GiantAntCowboy On HDZero 1080 looks like 720p streatch to 1080 and program sharpness increased, and 720p looks like standard 720 did a bit blurry.
