Being a devout bhakta myself, I fully agree that Diwali celebration inside India is too noisy and polluted. It is over the top and pompous. With or without family, friends and devotees, it is appropriate to have a puja ceremony with sober celebration and reflection.

If you have nine-to-five job it is difficult to keep high standard in Deity worship. Set your own standard. Like for example offer fruits in the morning and milk in the evening to your Thakurji and maybe one time a week abishek. I have a small business.
