David Sanborn was my step into Jazz in the 80's. I'll never forget his special unique sound and phrasing. Glad hearing him twice live in concert in Vienna 😊🎶

I was crushed when I heard the news of his passing. My uncle called me and told and although he was 78 yrs old I wanted more from this incredible saxophonist who got me interested into the world of smooth jazz. I was blessed to have met him and just so honored to have seen him play live, and to hear him warm up was a treat for me as well . Thank you Mr.Sanborn.

I had the pleasure to see Sanborn live only once, around 1999. Even better than the albums! Soul music, from the inner flame of his heart.

Sanborn had a profound influence on me, as he was the sax player I’ve studied the most over the years. His sound is what gets the most attention but his expressiveness is really what set him apart from other sax players. Truly a unique artist.

When I was 14, I got Straight to the Heart on vinyl and wore it out. Needless to say, no matter how hard i tried, I never sounded like Sanborn. But that journey turned me into the player I am now. Put the Dukoff back on the sax today, to remember Sanborn, and you know what? Its a great mouthpiece

It's no surprise he worked well with Mike Brecker (who held him in high esteem). Like Brecker, Sanborn was one of those guys who could play in any context- fusion, 'smooth' jazz, straight ahead jazz, funk, rhythm & blues, pop, rock, even avant garde- and fit right in, yet still sound completely like themselves. There's a valuable lesson there.

One of his hardest ballads ever created to me in the past 30 years is off of his album "Songs From The Night Before" titled "Missing You". That ish go so hard. I feel in love with his sound when I was in beginning band in 7th Grade. My mom purchased me my first jazz album which was that album. Sanborn will always have a special place in my heart. Rip to one of the GOATS.

Sanborn was one of my earliest favorites. I bought a cd of his album heart to heart, I think recorded in 78. “Solo” is one of my favorite tunes on that album. Outside his pop solos some of his albums are really great. Thanks for putting this tribute together.

I agree, great tribute. But let me guess what you consider D.Sanborn's best solo with Carly Simon (cause I'm a great fan of both): You belong to me? Just like you do? We're so close? Blue of blue? I got it bad? Hello big man? My favourite is "Blue of blue" taken from the album "Torch" (1981). Greetings from Portugal.

Brillant video Jamie. I first became aware of DS listening to Jools Holland, Rockinghorse album. On Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, the song builds tension until exploding with the perfect alto sax solo by DS. Every time I hear it, it makes me appreciate the saxophone and what an amazing instrument it is.
