buying circulated coins and used by by our forefathers in my opinion is priceless because they have been a part of their daily lives, travelling and circulating thus became a major part of history rather than being kept uncirculated.

I think Rod is making a great point here, that you should buy a coin that "speaks" to you. An attractive coin is not necessarily always uncirculated, circulated coins have a charm of age especially when nicely toned.
I know all of this now... if only someone told me this when I started my collection so many years ago! :-D Thanks for the tips for the new collectors. I particularly like the "buy the best coin you can.". Lately, I'd rather buy one special coin per year than 100 a month (which I use to).

There are 3 kinds of people in the world of Numismatics: Investors, Collectors and Flippers. Of course, you can have someone that branches off into all 3 fields but those are the main arteries. Most seasoned investors looking toward retirement are just interested in having a store of value be retained at the very least and hopefully rise with time slowly. Anything too abrupt swinging up/down is too volatile and left to the Flippers/day-traders. Collectors buy for the actual aesthetics of the coin itself. Some are looking to complete a series or color variety, year, quality, tone or a mix thereof- lastly, you have the flippers! These guys/gals buy/sell most anything for a buck and are most likely not experts in any particular field, knowing just enough not to get scammed so they can go on to the next thing. A coin to them is simply a short-term commodity to be bought cheaply sometimes in bulk to be chopped up and sold at a premium.
For my own personal collection, one of my favorites is my 1852 large cent. Who has held that coin and what their life must've been like are very interesting questions to ponder for me.

Unfortunately for me the coins i admire the most are the silver bullion private mini mint ones, ie silver shield. Even though i know it's a stupid investment, i admire the artwork so much that i can't stop collecting them lol.
He expressed exactly my feeling about old coins. I try to imagine who might have carried them in their pocket. Think of half dime or shield nickel maybe a kid had that and felt like a millionaire..
I actually really like coins that are worn as well. Thinking about where they've been and I specifically buy coins from the Soviet Union because I have this deep interest in how a socialist economy affected people's wealth.

my coins are all scratched up beat up and really don't mean much to most people but it's the hopes and dreams of that coin once represented I love my coins that's why I'm going to bury mine if I get a chance I would rather have them found as some treasure then just sold at a pawn shop for a few bucks
I apologize for reposting this on another channel but I am very interested in finding out about this coin! I have been officially collecting for about 1/2 year now and I have found a Lincoln penny with what I believe to be clash errors on the reverse that create what looks to be a second Lincoln in one of the Memorial bays! There is a head and legs that clearly happened during the strike and a torso that is there which I am not sure what type of error this is (the torso). Upon further examination, I found two other 'Lincoln heads' on the same reverse of this coin - one of the outside of the Memorial and one in another bay within the Memorial. With the history of our former Founding father I thought this coin might be particularly interesting! I have affectionately titled this specimen, the "GHOST OF LINCOLN" cent! Any suggestions?
I am an investor/collector and I'm ready to sell my coins. I only have one roll of coins that were placed into thick Glass like super hard plastic the day/time they were minted or released. I took one out of the roll and got it graded and it received a MS67+ the other 49 coins are in the exact same condition from the same stick of copper a 1968s Lincoln cent could use a regrade in hopes of getting a MS68+ . Nevertheless who can I sell this coin and roll to?
Your Local Coin Store may give you $0.15 to $0.20 each, so $8 to $10 for the roll. Or you could sell it on eBay for $25 (eBay will keep $2.50, leaving you $22.50).
Talking about rare, and high premiums, try a Crown of the Rose. Discovered and sold at auction in 1961 for £4000. That's the equivalent of £87,464 today. Its gold content today would be worth £109.

Great information! I've been a Financial Advisor for 23 years. Historically, Gold/Silver (bullion) have been horrible "investments". Watching some of these "silver stackers" on TH-cam is laughable. Buy Numismatic coins...enjoy it as a hobby, enjoy the beauty and history of the coin; also, remember that your coin is ONLY worth what someone will pay you for it!!
I do both without going broke. Usually whenever Modern Coin Mart has a flash sale on a certain coin with a low mintage I’ll pick it up but me personally I’m a big fan of Star Wars so I’m trying to work on the PF slabbed coins and try to collect them all and if I ever wanted to sale them I would be targeting the coin collectors and Star Wars fans who collect anything Star Wars. Other than that any coin I buy I buy it because I like it
I have found some coins, like the double stamp penny a older year and a 1926 I believe penny is there some good prices that people who really want these coins would pay and who .
I bought mine for the sole reason that they were 90% silver...we are at a low right now. I know it will go back up to at least $37 or $38 at some point and I'll double my $$$ :)
Indian head pennies Wheat pennies,pre 1970 halves,dimes and quarter's pre 1965,buffalos not the 2005's,and nickels from the 30's,40's 1942-1945 should have a letter over the Monticello on the back of the coin that will tell you it is 35% silver ,and 50's those are my favorites try ordering a box of coins from your bank you may not find a lot but if you keep coin roll hunting you will find some coins you will like,also there are tons of error coins also,just find the coins that you love to collect and learn about them,I've been coin roll hunting and have found at least 700 wheat pennies,3 indian head pennies,4 buffalos,6,35 % silver nickels,couple of error dimes AND Canada has discontinued their pennies so I like to collect those, hope this helps good luck hope you find a ton of awesome coins
@knpstrr - It is not an impossible task, but you need to spend "Quality" time educating yourself. I'm not talking a few days, I'm talking 3 months minimum. That's before you even consider looking through coins. Education of what to look for, how to save it properly, grading, what to do and not to do, etc. . . take Time, Energy and Money. But, it increases your chances at succeeding in what you want to collect. There is an old saying in coin collecting . . . "buy the book, before you buy the coin". Education is the Key.
Do you want to be a collector or an investor? If you want to be an investor, go to a local coin store, talk to the clerk and pick out a few older coins that you can afford. Keep them for several years. If you want to be a collector, get some coin folders and start collecting Lincoln cents, Jefferson nickels, Roosevelt dimes, Washington quarters, Kennedy half dollars or Presidential dollars. Collect one of each date and mint nark and put them in the folders. (I used to pull Indianhead pennies, Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes, Standing Liberty quarters and Franklin half dollars out of my pocket change, but that was back in the 1960s and those coins are kind of rare in pocket change these days.

For me i dont really care about the condition. My favorite coin i have is a 1883 v nickel no cents but it has a black spot on the back and it just makes me wonder what happened to that coin in the 1800's.

Yes! I HEAR ya. People are so busy basically stealing what you believe in and they cash in on your fortune.
I like the idea of passing my folders down and then when they're 300 years old, people won't really mind a little wear.

A 1926 Lincoln cent in VF-20 condition is worth 50 cents. In VG-8 condition, it's only worth 25 cents.
