  • Looking to improve your defense in hockey? Join Jason as he breaks down Quinn Hughes' confidence as a defensemen and ability to punch turn away from defenders. Check out our full section on Quinn Hughes inside Downhill Skating System 4 and Train 2.0+.
When a player gets under pressure and doesn't feel comfortable punch turning, they typically just chip the puck away. However, Quinn Hughes, being more comfortable with punch turns than your average NHL player, allows him to confidently perform advanced maneuvers, like spinning off defenders at the blue line.
The supreme confidence required for this challenging skill comes from extensive practice and comfort with the mechanics. When you closely observe Hughes, you'll see the effort and precision in his footwork, even though he makes it look effortless. His foot skips numerous times, indicating the difficulty of maintaining balance and grip on the ice.
To make punch turns look as simple and smooth as Hughes does, you need to focus on two key elements: reps and awareness. You need to be aware of the correct techniques and put in the time to practice them.
If you want to develop the awareness and cues that top players like Hughes, McDavid, Barzal, and McKinnon use for punch turns, check out the Downhill Skating System. I've put together a free five-workout program to help you learn the mechanics of this system. Click the link below to get started.

It's amazing that his foot is skipping since it means he's at the limit of his punch turning ability, and he even has room to improve. Thanks for this!

question - do you reccomend dropping the top eyelet to promote deeper shin angle?

Yes whatever helps with your ankle flexion. Lots of ways to get there.
