Very helpful! I am a builder, trying to understand civil engineering better. Without these videos we must guess with our design work and overbuild. That often means going over budget. Thank you from British Columbia, Canada.

I appreciate the presentation. Though, there seems to be a mistake in calculating the the Factor Moment. Mu=1720 kN-m and corrected to 17820 kN-m when calculating 'd'. Mu=14256 kN-m in my calculation. Why? Is there a mistake in the formula or a mix-up of units? Pls give correction and explanation, as this is very very important and will satisfy many who have commented the same. You 've not replied so far. Why? I think you should. Many thanks!

i was making a master sheet yea and i thought i was a dunce i kept rearranging the formula in excel and was still getting Mu= 14256kn.m also in the calculation of Length of the pad foundation L= 3.83 m - round up to 4m . There were cal errors yes but i do appreciate the design procedure. Much thanks.

Also need to take factored load Pu in factor moment equation....and factor moment equation is not satisfied with unit of KNm...but it is coming KNm.m i.e kNm2...
Actual equation from interaction chart of column is
Mu=Pu×fck×bD2,,,where D is overall depth including cover,,
First of all it is needed in design whether column is short or long,,,which method is using WSM or LSM...column effective length Le comes in picture(with 4 condition discontinuos/continuous etc) then ratio of
      Le/500 +B/30 or 20mm for minimum eccentricity
Then still lot more if column is designed as long column...10%increase then helical reinforcement,,ties, pitch,,spacing,,dia

@@HTheHeat619 So this presentation is merely a procedural only, and it doesn't count on the reality of the design. Everything are assumptions.

  • @mh9251

The calculation has mistakes. Correct computation will bring 14256. But, the formula itself you have added extra "B". It is (PL square)÷2.
Also by using your factor moment formula SI units does not cancel properly.
Please rectify and present again. I love your teaching and knowledge you share. Thanks.

THEE most often mistake made is not elevating the column footing with large gravel and stones to ensure a proper depth of concrete UNDER the footer. the pressure of the weight of the structure can puncture the bottom of the footer cement and you end up with a building supported by rebars stuck in the mud.
you need to address THEE most common mistakes people make with each area.
