My first memory of Tommy Smith is from a lovely community fund-raising concert at Queens Hall in Edinburgh in the 80s to help send him to Berklee. My last memory is from his 'Embodying the Light' tribute to John Coltrane last year (also at the Queens Hall) playing with Sebastiaan de Krom, Peter Johnston and Calum Gourlay. They played really close to each other with no amplification. This was deeply moving and in harmony with Coltrane's intense spirituality. Tommy was utterly modest and, like Nicola Benedetti, he is for me a Scottish hero who goes on and on giving back.
Amazing stuff, great playing. It's a shame that Tommy's playing isn't so recognised either in the UK or in Europe. I remember seeing him when I was at music college in Newcastle circa 1981-2. He came and played with his quartet, except the weather was so bad the piano player never made it, and they played in trio. Starting with a version of Autumn Leaves which was just killing!

That was soothing to the spirit. Thank you. One of the Crucioli's here. Love older footage and experimental effects.
