      Being scotch irish and from texas alot of us already have a variant of an irish accent. It shows up in the way we say certain words, like "Horse". We put almost an "Ahh" sound instead of the O, Much like the irish.

    I would usually consider myself someone with a lot of patience. But knowing that there is an electric powered lathe would make me absolutely despise using something with as many inconveniences as a pole lathe. It really makes watching the videos that much more fun because he makes it seem like it's so much more fun and easy than it really would be. I can enjoy the process without having to actually go through it.

    Idea for a possible future improvement/iteration: have one of the chucks mounted through one of the legs, extend the spike to pass through the leg and spin freely, then add a decently sizes fly wheel to the free end dangling off the side of the lathe. Now replace the pedal/tree/rope combo with a pedal running to a crack that turns the flywheel (might need to use a secondary shaft running under the lathe and belted to the chuck/flywheel shaft to be able to place the crank near where you'd want to be standing). Finally change the chuck to be a kind that locks onto the wood rather than holding it at a single point so that work piece is rigidly tied to the rotating flywheel via the chuck. While mechanically more complex, it would yield the benefit of requiring less space, maintaining the direction of rotation, and result in smoother, more uniform, and more precise cuts (at least to the limit achievable by hand held cutting tools).

    You build chisel handles and milk stools. I build windmills and small engines that run on compressed air. Almost the same. I use a motor-driven metal-cutting engine lathe. I can only imagine using a lathe like yours. I am patient, but YOUR lathe would drive me to drink!

    Great work! The book I have on pole-lathes suggests a leather strap to turn the piece you have on the lathe. I never got around to switching out the rope I used though, so I don't know how good that is.

    A chisel is one tool I'd still really love to get! I haven't seen many brands here, but do you have any recommendations on decent chisel brands or what to look for in a tool?

    • @EoinReardon
      @EoinReardon  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Look for old chisels! They are abundant. Lots of the old ones are made from very hard Sheffield steel. Most moderately priced modern chisels are pretty decent. But any cheese chisels are going to suck.

    Head on down to the nearest livestock/farm supply store and grab yourself a tin of pine tar. You'll find no better thing for coating wood, especially tool handles. It was the tradition long before linseed oil came around and is leagues better, imo.

    Maybe you could gear that turning rope or pedal to get more revolutions per stroke. Anyway, job well done.
