Keith - EXTENDED DIP STICK -- You can buy an exteded dipstick so that it is much easier to remove and to put back. Kits come complete with dipstic as well as an exteded tub/pipe that it goes in. Works perfectly and can be as long as 6 feet so you can bend it to fit your engine compartment exactly.
Keith, I give you PROPS for all the work you do on that boat. I have enjoyed watching the family grow up for the last several years. Its my Thursday fix!
I cannot imagine Keith adding a prop incorrectly, he is just so particular and organised. For all those bolts to shear at once it must have had to encounter an obstacle like floating debris. I am a new subscriber from UK and I have been following your travels for several weeks now and enjoying every minute. This is my first comment. I do watch three other sailors, two with catamarans and one a solo sailor from UK.
Let your husband know that this this is normal in life we all make errors no matter what we are not perfect he's done an amazing job with that boat and everything he does especially raising a family and keeping them safe in the middle of the ocean so my hat goes off to that man

Crap happens! You all got through it safe and sound, that is what counts! Thank you for sharing again this week. Good job on the videos Renee, as always you do a fantastic job of what you film, edit and post online.
Keith, adjusting the max prop underwater is considered wizard level by most divers. I made that mistake on the hard! What was my excuse? Luckily. I couldn’t even leave the dock with how garbage off my my install was. It’s a very awkward procedure to say the least. You will love the Maxprop EZ. Remember to grease it thoroughly with calcium sulphonate #1 grease. Avoid #2, it’s too thick. Chevron Black Pearl is good, Lubriplate AA also good. Two plugs to unscrew, but do just one at a time, thread in a zerk, pump grease, and repeat. Happy sailing!
Love the D.R. one of my favorite islands/people in the Caribbean. Glad you found the problem when you did, instead of when you needed both props to get out of a bind.

I'm from Puerto Rico and live in Texas. I've been following the page for a while. I recommend visiting Culebra, specifically Flamenco Beach, which is one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico. Culebra is a small island to the east of the main island of Puerto Rico.
I like the serendipity of your passage. Prop problem? No problem, let's go discover some nature and enjoy a waterfall swim. It wouldn't have happened if the prop had not fallen off. Love that you turn a negative into a positive experience. Keep up the great vid's!

Those props are machined within thousands of an inch tolerances, that’s why they a numbered one to three. To fluke getting one back the in the same place would be luck, to fluke all three would be a miracle, then at that rpm they would vibrate to breaking point. Hint, don’t mention you’re getting fuel each time you arrive somewhere, if you want people not to think you motor all the time. Love your vlogs.

Watching that oil change reminded me that we had a Fram oil filter split wide open while cruising to Catalina island on our 1986 Grand Banks which effectively destroyed the one engine and made a huge mess. It took a few years but they eventually settled just before we were due in court
Since you're all about modification to make everything easier... I'd look at extending the oil dipstick tube to make it much easier to access... The new setup looks nice, Kieth!
Rene and Keith, 'just got finished watching Jack's newest vlog, and he told us of Kate's Birthday falls on the same day as mine. She is the first person I have found to share my birth date with, in the 67 years I've been looking. Thanks for my birthday gift!! Its wonderful to know I share it with such a special young lady.

I bought my Leopard 47 in Grenada. I had my cutlass bearings replaced, and when I got to Puerto Rico, I throttled in reverse to set the anchor, and my boat did a 180. Lost the port propeller. They didn't secure it properly.
Knew you'd be fine with that filter setup, though I'd recommend the extended dip stick like others mentioned so you can check your levels more often. Crazy how those bolts sheared! I wouldn't be hard on yourself, if you haven't figured out by now if it was bad install, bad materials, or if you hit something you'll prob never find out. Just be thorough on the brand new prop installs.
Always enjoy watching. 2 quick questions. I recall a while ago, Keith visited the Privilege plant and mentioned he was going to discuss his issues with Privilege when he was outside of international waters (or something like that). Also, given the recent American couple that was hijacked in Grenada, are you at all concerned about security while you are down there?
Hey Keith just wondering why you check oil level right after you shut down the motor ? I was always thought to give it a few min so oil will have time to drain back to oil pan to keep from over feeling.
I am going to go with you clip something with the prop at sea and was not a torc issue never blame the captain 😅. Nice to see a longer at sea vedio again.
Not me going back and watching older videos 4-5 at a time. Miss my binge watching days of just episode after episode. I have to come back and watch some older ones every now and then (While Keith and Renee were on their break and on the hard in Grenada) just to listen to the damn opening theme song! Got so used to hearing it on every episode, many times a day for months, that I found myself missing it! LOL Happy the new season has started, sad that all the Whitaker kids aren't there for this season, but life moves on right? :(
What!! No Spare. I had a problem with one of my Flexofolds, so I replaced it with my Michigan Wheel spare fixed prop and was merrily on my way. I also have motorsailed long distances to windward with one engine. No problem . I always try to find a fix to get through and make the proper one at my convenience.
Unless you have oil prelube on your engines, when they are started and until the oil filter refills after an oil change you will have no or reduced oil pressure. You may want to consider purchase of a prelube system or maybe an Accusump.
You guys and gals are great people and I continue to enjoy your journey through life..........stay safe! If you ever feel like heading north to Atlantic Canada and especially Prince Edward Island, we would love to see all of you! Our water warms up to the mid 70's or higher during the summer and PEI has some of the best seafood on the planet..........just a thought for all of you! I also realize hurricane season is upon us so that might be a hard sell.
we were just on a cruise and one destination was Dominican Republic. I cannot tell you how many times I scanned the horizon for that blue "Z".... hope you all had a wonderful time.
Sort of like RVing, you make your plans in jello when you are sailing. Good luck with the new props Keith and don't let the smoke out of the batteries. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
Hi from Narrabri NSW Australia. I just love you guys and dream of getting out there on the water again one day. I did a sailing trip around the Greek Islands in 1986 with 9 friends on a Beneteau. The best fun!! Thanks for taking me on your journey ❤️👍
Hey brother, for what it’s worth, it doesn’t seem logical that misaligned prop blades to drive unit would shear those bolts in that amount of time. Besides the fact that premise would seemingly require asymmetrical blades. Seems much more likely it was a strike and sudden failure as those bolts are meant to shear at certain loads to save upstream systems from serious damage.
16:12 Daddy is denying no wrong doing and the FAA NOI Letter confirmed that Pilots should not be doing Prop RIG work without an A&P license....... Everyone makes mistakes!!! Only one side had a boo boo and think about working under water, like working in the pouring rain and it's freezing cold Sh*t Happens!! Keith is still a VERY Highly rated Mechanic in my book, No one got hurt and life goes on!!!
Awesome video! Loved the music throughout! Also loved the waterfalls/slides - sort of reminds me of Jamaica mahn, lol. Glad y'all got the prop fixed before being out in open waters.
Back in the 60's, my dad taught me to "prime" the oil filter with oil so it doesn't take as long to get to the engine. Also, we had a TOILET PAPER oil filter on a '61 GMC pickup.
POOR KEITH . . . he'll never be able to live this one down . . . but, it sounds like the new props will be much nicer - and, you'll KNOW they will last a long time, without giving any "trouble". ( everything in life happens for a reason - we just don't always know WHY )
I Forgive Keith..... Sh*t Happens!! He's still a highly thought of Mechanic in my book (And thats a tough book) I'd still trust him to put my "Jesus Nut" on....
I have a question for you. I'm wondering about the logistics of the supplies when you order them. To actually get the products that you order I'm wondering if you just order it online and then as soon as you pull in you just wait for it there. How does that work? If you have to return anything. How do you do that? When I was in the Navy each ship had its own address and no matter where in the world the ship went, it was tracked, and mail and supplies delivered. Is that the same for you? If that's possible.
Where are you this days, we been looking forward to seeing you in one of the bays towards Grenada. We are currently in St.Kitts...sailing soon to Guadalope.
I was kind of skeptical about changing the pitch of the props under water. Those fasteners are supposed to be installed with LocTite unless that's changed. Only worked on one boat that had those MaxProps and that was many years ago. Perhaps things have changed but looking at yours it appears the screws came loose and some sheered off.
Guess you are putting converters on to limit current and also voltage off engine alternators. With that oil filter being remote and taking a while to fill, I noticed you did not rev engine, important for oil pressure to be given time to come up to pressure first. Nice channel. Been following since SV Sunrise interview.
You guys have finally landed somewhere I've been. Puerto Plata has incredible kitesurfing but with the wacky winds, it's easy to get slammed. Safe sailing ⛵️ to you all
Super episode. Mr Finn, please don't rush off the boat....Skipper K, don't sweat about the prop, one of "those things". Maybe a bit like Renault electric windows. That was my pleasure this morning, don't ask 😂😂 Great video Mama R, God bless all xx🤗🤗
in the motorsports community, i know a few guys who have sheered brand new grade 8 bolts. Not sure if its a quality control issue from overseas or whats going on.

Pleasantly surprised no oil from the filter!
Hopefully it cranks a little longer on startup to make up for filling the filter every single start!
You have been blessed with gravity Keith. That’s why the change of the filter works so well.
Cursed with an air pocket.
I did the Waterfalls about 5 years ago at 55 years old it was so much fun!!!
My subaru wrx has a top mount oil filter and it makes the change so much easier!
No props ever fell off when Kate was onboard. She was the glue that held Zatara together.
CONSIDERING +++ I THOUGHT THAT WENT PRETTY GOOD
Sort of like RVing, you make your plans in jello when you are sailing.
Keith is still a VERY Highly rated Mechanic in my book, No one got hurt and life goes on!!!
wtf? It's a boat. One of those A's is for aviation.
On the Queen Mary 2 I was at the neighboring Dominican Republic Canaveral Port in 2016. I like the big ships!
That water fall place ya'll went to was on amazing race this year!
Hope your boat is safe with the hurricane this week.
You two remind me of my parents. Love you guys! Be safe 🙏
Safe next passage guys👊
17:08 - nice drone footage of the area.
Better hurry! Weather is getting sporty!!!
There is always a reason for something to happen like a prop falling off! It delayed you for some reason or another so just enjoy the ride !
Where are you this days, we been looking forward to seeing you in one of the bays towards Grenada. We are currently in St.Kitts...sailing soon to Guadalope.
That oil change was a thing of beauty 👌
Beachballs and waterfalls, Finn! It was right there for you.... lol ;)
I can't believe I have been following you for eight years! Where did that time go? Keith and Renee look the same but the kids have grown up.
Guess you are putting converters on to limit current and also voltage off engine alternators. With that oil filter being remote and taking a while to fill, I noticed you did not rev engine, important for oil pressure to be given time to come up to pressure first. Nice channel. Been following since SV Sunrise interview.
I’m curious why you guys didn’t install a bypass filter? Have you thought about installing a catch can like a ProVent 100?
8am in SA.still watching and still enjoying.
Big tip...put magnets on oil and diesel filters...you will be amazed.
21:51 Hey Mom did you catch that? Finn's in the back there with his Touge out 😂😂😂😂
The Amazing Race had an episode where they were at the rock water slide how funny!
You guys have finally landed somewhere I've been. Puerto Plata has incredible kitesurfing but with the wacky winds, it's easy to get slammed. Safe sailing ⛵️ to you all
Saily is probably the best thing you could have promoted! Thanks😎
Thank you for the upload. Hope you make it to Grenada soon fair winds ❤ ❤
No passport? "I'm throwing you overboard" 😂 That is hilarious, Renee.
😂
Orcas were mad because they didn't do a good job on the rudder.
Surely The motor manufacturer could come up with a better dip stick for you all.Enjoying the channel. Tks for sharing.
