I owned 2 of them at one stage. Best 4x4 ever. Does everything amazing. Even the stereo is amazing. Everything is well thought out. Seats are great I terms if position. Visibility. This review is spot on. So underrated. I had a Landcruiser 200 series. This just kills it in every way. Even power delivery. This is coming from a dedicated toyota man. The LR4 is king.

Have a 2016 I bought new. HSE with Heavy Duty Package. Love it. I put a lot of miles on my vehicles- have close to 55,000. Absolutely zero problems. It can do 90 mph on the freeway out to the mountains then take me on a trail or a muddy riverbed when I get there. Carries my kayak and paddle on the roof, mountain bike on the back and tows my 5,000 lb boat with ease. Holds a ton of gear in the boot. Love the tailgate bc it’s great place to sit when beginning or finishing the day’s adventure and to take on or off boots, especially when the boot is jammed full. Nooks and crannies everywhere to store all the off-road essentials. Wish it had a 110 plug (I had to get an adaptor for the 12 volt boot plug) and more tie down points inside. Also wish I could have gotten HSE with 18 inch wheels to fit bigger tires (the 20s don’t allow for a tire with much sidewall- I guess the 20s look great in town but wish I had a higher sidewall off-road- getting Nitto Ridge Grapplers 265/50s tomorrow which will help a little) Otherwise it rocks. It has already rescued a Honda and a Volvo in snow.

I have a 2016 HSE Luxury. It is a well appointed in the aspects of comfort, drive and 4x4 capability. I've been driving Land Rovers since 1973. My first one was an L88 (defender), 4 cylinders, safari roof, etc. Then a '99 Discovery II which I drove for 15 years, then a Range Rover HSE. The secret is keep the vehicle well maintained, if something goes wrong, fixed as soon as possible. I use Amsoil lubricants and I change oil every 20K miles although Amsoil recommends change every 25K miles. Rovers are great utilitary wagons and very popular here in Utah.

I like LR4s way better than new D5. Newer ones are not even "rugged" body on frame. Now its basically a crossover that looks alot like a Ford Explorer.

I had a 1995 Land Rover Discovery, with a manual transmission. I bought an extended warranty. Man, did I need it! It spent about 1 week out of every 4, in the repair shop. The motor, the transmission, and the drive train were bullet-proof. Everything attached to them broke. Fuel pump, water pump, radiator, brake pump, blinkers, radio, sunroof shades, headliner, every damm thing broke. WHEN IT WAS RUNNING it was slow but FUN. It was sooooo airy with great visibility. I had it for 18 months. It only ran for 14 of those. I just bought a 2019 Nissan Armada/Patrol. The new Discovery's were too expensive and look like old Dodge Durango's. I should have probably looked for a used LR4. The new Nissan does not have enough cubby holes and trays for stuff, in the cabin.

The greatest vehicle Land Rover/Range Rover has ever produced. I have owned a Disco, Range Sport and a LR3. I currently own a 2016 LR4 HSE. It is everything the host of this video claims. Much more reliable than previous LR/RR vehicles that I have owned. The LR4 is the ultimate SUV. I live in the Northeast, and have to drive in ice and snow. It never lets me down. Tons of cargo space with the seats folded down. Enough luxury to spoil you, and the best command driving position in any SUV. I can’t tell you how many requests I get to sell it. The new Discovery looks “soft”. A soccer mom’s car. The LR4 is a brute.
One key to reliability is to find a good mechanic that specializes in them and follow the the maintenance schedule. The LR4 will give you years of driving satisfaction.
    Long live the LR4.

I’ve had the LR4 since 2012 SDV6, great reliability. Just watch out for the lower front control arms. They are prone to wearing out. You’ll start hearing thumping sound when you hit bumps or speed humps.

2:58 - This is the first I've heard of any issues with the air suspensions in the LR3s. I've only heard reliable things about them in that model. I had an '06 LR3 from '11 to '14, and my personal experience was also that it was reliable. Sold it with 130k miles, because the Land Rover techs were saying the locking diffs were showing signs of wear.

Great content. You are well spoken, clear and concise in your delivery as hit a lot of important points viewers are really interested in. At least I am anyway. I really like the LR4 and would love to own one however, new/nearly new isn’t an option financially but even if it were, the past reliability issues scare that heck out of me. I hope the reliability of these newer models greatly improves and I can pick a gently used one up in a year or two without needing to deplete my savings to keep it running. Great SUV.

As one of those long time lr guys.. later lr3 had improvements. 08/09 lr3 4.4 v8s have probably best engine for long term reliability. As you say, lr4 marking end of a line. Shame they did not bring over 2.7 and 3.0 tdv6s. 30mpg possible. If they'd made timing belt change and long term maintenance easier then would have had perfect package. Lineage started with 1970 Range rover which was a citroen ds level revelation in the utility vehicle world... a game changer.

Thanks for the video- wish you were still doing them. I watched because I’m trying to make myself feel better about buying a Land Rover in the first place! I have the 2015 LR4 HSE and I LOVE driving it on and off road but as of next week it will have cost me 14k in repairs: year 5 was leak issue (6k) and now it’s transmission (8k). But, like you I love it’s size, styling and capabilities. Argh.

This is a great review and totally agree with everything you’ve said here.
I’ve got a Disco 4 2011 model and love it. Luckily it’s got the 3.0l (it’s a TDV6 diesel twin turbo) and is well spec’d with reverse camera etc.. I’ve also added a LLAMS kit which is a plug and play style kit that lets you override the ride height/air suspension. Great for going a little lower on the motorway, and a little higher without automatically having the height reduced as you hit a certain speed. I see the new D5 and just feel it really is odd looking

Great video...Love my 2010 LR4 HSE LUX. 5.0. Got it with only 85k on it and it's an amazing machine. 4x4 is superb. Snow, trails, sand. I'm truely ecstatic with its on road/off road response. My Yukon Denali or my Tahoe couldn't shake a stick at this when it comes to non pavement. The only thing I don't like (I know you can modify it but I don't know if I wanna go that route) is when raised up in offroad mode, you cant do over 35mph. There have been times even on pavement, I'd like to raise it up. But that's my ONLY complaint. Love my Rovah (lol Massachusetts accent) and best part is I got it for under $11k

@@Gtrolla88 It will drive in normal height. But you can raise it at the push of a button. It will automatically lower back to its normal height when you go past a certain speed which is around 30mph if I recall correctly.

Love our 2011 D4. Beautiful to drive on and off road. A few issues, sure, but find a good LR mechanic and service them properly and all good. Standard 19 inch rims are a pain as limit offroad tyre choice.
    Can't fit a bull bar to a D5. New D5 more like a mum's soccer car.

    Hi Phil.
    First of all. Greaaat review.
Timeless ( Attested by me watching and giving feedback in 2019 :)
I like your sentiments on the new Discovery.
I also feel that Landrover made a huge mistake doing away with the boxy shape for a curvy one.
    Let me explain.
The boxy shape was structured and represented a style, finesse, essence for those people who find boxy vehicles their preference.
Plus in a world of boxy and curvy, chosing the curvy constituent in lieu of the boxy was in my view a poor decision from the comments I have personslly heard. They should have atleast had both as a worst case scenario, or had the new version as a sport version of the discovery.
Secondly, the former discovery was taller, roomier and had presence. The new one looks like a variant of the range rover, range rover sport as well as evoque. A complete change of design which should not have occured. This new one is small, crammy and cross-over is.
    Boy toyish
It was man's car . Not to sound chauvinistic bit a majority of men would go for a more boxy shape than a a curvy on. *disclaimer* my opinion.
All in all. In my view The discovery heritage & what it stood for is gone.

A good review. Mine is a little older (2011) and the steering wheel is on the opposite side, but still basically the same car. I'm not even vaguely interested in the new (2018) model. I'm afraid Land Rover has lost the plot over the last couple of years. I have owned a '79 Range Rover 2 door V8 petrol, a Discovery 1 V8 petrol, a Discovery 2 TD5 diesel, and now the Discovery 4 TDV6 diesel. Unless the new Defender is something along the lines of the Discovery 4 / Defender square "box" body style, my current D4 will probably be my last Land Rover.

Not as big a fan of new Disco. It’s why I got the LR4- I was worried what they were gonna do to it in remodel. The rearend is just hideous. Luckily I’m gonna keep my LR4 until well after the new Defender comes out. Hopefully that will kick butt old school.

Hi, I am planning to buy a 2012 LR4 with 57000 KM, one owner and up to date service at Land Rover at $25000 CND. Please anybody can help that should I buy this LR4 because so many stories about 5.0 V8 engine timing chain issues. Thanks

    • @genius2000
      @genius2000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I guess it all depends on what you are looking for. Yes timing chain issue is common on 2010 to 2013 but those got V8 and got more power. LR4 2014 and up are V6 and it still runs fine but you will see the power differences with V8. Also, low range is an option for 2014 and up so if you are looking one for off roading then I would go with 2013 LR4. If you are just gonna use it for malls and mainly in the city, I would go with 2014 and up. I own 2015 and I love it

    • @chrise.5269
      @chrise.5269 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Changing the oil often helps delay the need to spend the $5000 USD to change the timing belt guides and tensioners (along with the timing chain). This is critical. I only use the OEM oil and change it every 3500 miles or so. This is particularly important in the cold (I notice you are in Canada?).
I am now at 135K miles on my 2011 LR4, I can hear the tapping on and off, am charting its worsening, but am still probably 30K miles away from having to execute the $5000 USD change. Just saving up the money to have it done. (The LR4 is our daily driver, and I don't have the time to do it myself).
I highly recommend the Low range option, even if you only need it very near to a paved road. I would have purchased a Heavy Duty option, but I could not find one available. For light duty Off-road, the non-locking rear definition model is excellent..

The only good thing about land rovers ( I mean classic ones, not modern ones which look like shit) is the looks and the space inside. Other than that it is an overpriced piece of shit that lay tommy flat even if a light bulb goes bad. Roof leaks. Engine breaks (doesn't matter petrol or diesel). Air suspensions are not made to be used at all. Good vehicle design but poor implementation.
