I like Dan's no nonsense approach to everything. He says and does it like it is!

I have the set. It is terrific. The vice is well made, and the files with the saw make cutting a breeze. Also a great kit if you are starting out on a repair career. The ruler is a great piece of workmanship.

@antman2117 Shimming the nut is something many of us have done over the years. (Years ago, a torn piece of matchbook cover was used pretty often.) This is a stopgap measure that can be expected to dampen your tone a little, but if shimming works for you until you can put a new higher nut in the guitar, no harm done!

Amazing. In this 1 1/2 minute video, not only did I learn about the right tools, he slips in, in just about ten seconds, How to file it to the proper depth with feeler gauges. What I would pay to spend a day with Dan. Thank goodness for TH-cam.

I would pay to work as his apprentice for a weekend. Dan knows some pretty neat stuff!

I always used shreds of a $1 bill. It is not true paper but cloth paper. Now that we have that clam shell plastic packaging it works okay too. I hate the stuff with a passion. At least it is good for something. In a pinch I would lay tiny a piece of $1 bill under a string until I could do a fill or shape a new nut. I like my tall jaw Wilburt Versa Vise the best for making nuts. The new parrot vice had the mounting peg snap on me. Yours limits my file stroke. It is still pretty darn nice!

depends on how much you work on them. Dan's tools are definitely worth having if you need them. But for instance how many times are you going to replace a nut even if you do have 7 guitars. I've owned over 100 guitars and basses in my life and I've only replaced two nuts. One because I wanted to try an Earvana and the other on my White Falcon re-issue for a custom made bone nut. But neither "had" to be replaced. Pick and choose what you need and I think you'll be satisfied with his creations.

Dan, maybe a stupid suggestion. There's the LSR rolling nut - right? This rolling nut is fastened by 2 little screws. Why aren't there pre-shaped nut's for sale which I (we?) can bolt on to the neck?

His tools are for luthiers and repairmen not someone who just wants to fix one guitar.

I love buying guitar kits online and putting them together, but I have had an ongoing problem. I keep getting a wine from the high E string when it's played open. I have had this happen on more than one guitar. They come with a cheap plastic nut, but I can't figure out if it's because the string is not set into the slot or what? please help...

@antman2117 If I had a 200 000 dollar guitar, I wouldn't even dream of servicing it myself....that's crazy!!! Go to a pro...of course that is if you really do own a 59'.... ;)

Widening the bass side spacing at the bridge and/or nut is wrong. Most of the fret wear takes place on the treble side. Which chords do you play most? Even spacing across the neck is preferred. Do you play the centers of the strings or the space between them? So why the hell would you want to cramp the treble side of the fingerboard? Outdated perspectives on guitar play-ability like this will cause you to suffer the consequences. Progressive string spacing guage!? Get a f'n divider/compass and walk it towards your target. As to essential tools, use: whatever combination of 10-56 nut files you prefer, get a couple bastard and smooth cut half round files for shaping bone, some emery cloth for flattening, sandpaper for smoothing, buff it out, and you're done. Facts are not necessarily romantic. Play on : )

This thing is $195, what's the point when you could buy yourself a whole new guitar for that price.
