I think the question is how do we listen to Jesus? when we get a prophetic word, how should we regard it? what should our response be? how can we tell if this is actually a word from Jesus? What is the purpose of prophetic words. Firstly I'd like to comment on your statement "self appointed prophets". If people mistakenly appoint themselves as prophets then there is going to be selfish and ungodly purposes that underly it. If God appoints you as a prophet, then there are ways to tell that. You will not only have experiences where a message or messages that God give you are like a fire burning in your heart. That the Holy Spirit evokes and provokes. People with prophetic ministry should either be under the authority of the Church and like pastors make it known that they are under the authority of chuch leadership. It would be good if this was enough but it is not. They also need to be accountable and if they give a word explain not only how to regard it but also provide their reasons as to why it is from the Lord. There is also a place for critiquing prophecies and indeed a need for this, and also a need to not attach slander or belittle people but to point out problems or issues with prophecies. True prophets grow through this process and can improve in both wisdom and insight.
