1UZ-FE conversion on Range Rover Classic

  • The Range Rover classic was acquired in 2006, and then it was already heavily modified for off road competition. Namibia has something called Vasbyt, which is a sort of obstacle course competition, and this car was customized for it. The roof was chopped, a roll cage installed, and the wheel arches were enlarged to accommodate larger tires.
    My other vehicles was a Land Rover Discovery in which the engine was swapped with a 1UZ-FE also known locally as a Lexus. It is an awesome engine, unfortunately it had some issues that were never solved. It overheated all the time, and it broke all the bits around it. Fuel economy was amazing, and it does have a beautiful sound.
    Learning from the previous engine swap, we kept the suspension from the rover, but swapped in KO52 Diffs and H55F gearbox from a Toyota Land Cruiser BJ70 to handle the increase in power.
    Using an old 1UZ-FE as a template we positioned the engine so that it's oil pan would not hit the front diff, and directly mounted it to the chassis.
    We had to move the firewall back.
    Finally we were able to fit the new 1UZ-FE from Lextreme.
    It is a tight squeeze...
    Finally she fired up.
    Here she is running with only headers connected, but no exhaust or cooling, and sonuding a bit rough.
    Once the exhaust was completed, she was running a lot more quiet.
    With the waterwoks plumbed in, it was time for a pressure test.
    The car is now running fine, but it still has this one annoying challenge. A death wobble. Here is a slowmo of it coming on. If there is anyone that knows how to fix it, please write it in the comments.

    Good bushings, well balanced tires , new tie rod and reinforced steering shock absorber...

    Has the Nissan Patrol death-wobble. Just about everything in that front end is munted. So it's radius arm bushes, balljoints, swivel rebuild, cv shimmed properly, relocate the steering damper to the correct RRC location on the track rod. It's not a defender, so don't try to make it one. the RRC is a much better steering vehicle than the defender. You'll have more success if you slot the swivels for more caster and/or use eccentric radius arm bushes - because any lift will alter that geometry and contribute negatively to the issue.

      Yeah, I am swapping out the chassis with one from a Land Cruiser FJ80. That should sort the death wobble and a few other issues.

      @@msdosgamereviews ek hoor jou . Ek saal belangstel om daai diffs van jou hande af te neem haha , dit kan ook wees dat die chassis gekraak is waar die steering box vas bout, jy moet kyk dat jou panhard so naby as moontlik aan parallel is met jou arm wat van jou box na jou tie rod loop . Hoe het julle die castor gemeet as ek mag vra? Want jy kan dit doen met n wheel alignment machine of jy kan dit meet oor die twee boonste boute op die knuckle met n angle finder. Jy kan glo watse verskil maak daai paar grade nie , want hy gaan ook minder trek op die pad en die stuurwiel gaan actually dit self centre en gaan nie voel soos 'n spar trollie nie . En as die castor wel dieselfde is , is dit 'n redelike maklike fix en bekostigbaar, kry net 'n stel castor correction bushes wat jou daai ekstra 3 4 grade gaan gee wat jy kort

    Death wobble..if you watch the front suspension, when it goes side to side the steering damper shock/ absorber rotates up then down with each side to side movement. it is twisting and the shock is fighting it but also participating in the problem. The pitman arm ball joint is moving up and down. It is worn out, as are all the bushings, Panhard rod bushings, radius arm bushings, you will find the ball and socket are worn badly, it is going to break soon. Swivel ball also needs preload set up. probably need to rebuild them as well. You can look at it wobbling and see everything moving, right?

    • @EvertVorster
      @EvertVorster  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there, John. Thanks for the analysis. We have replaced most of the ball joints once already, but as the rubbers have split from this action we might have another go at that. I do have another much higher speed and resolution action cam now, and will post an update once I get back to fiddling a little more with the vehicle. I'll notify you on the comments here if the vehicle still does that.

      4:05 look at the pitman arm and the boot going up and down. there should be zero-0- movement up and down at that joint. please take that off and have a look. I have had a range rover for 12 years. In case you havent seen this or are unaware, skip through till you get to the swivel ball preload/drag required. th-cam.com/video/_dOijZ9q9PY/w-d-xo.html it's very similar to this for you.. I Just love rovers.. I will wait to see what you come up with...If the pitman arm goes up and down in the tie rod ball joint if its worn it will move from tight to loose in the joint, this has the same effect as turning the steering wheel a very small amount, so up and down translates to side to side. Incorrect castor angles could be adding to this problem,..Good Luck to you.. Thank you

    Did the fuel economy change with the 1UZ ?

    • @EvertVorster
      @EvertVorster  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly, I would not know, as the spedometer is not working, and the vehicle is not a daily driver anymore... The UFZE-1 is more economical, but the way I drive it is very un-economical. :P
      I did a similar swap on a Land Rover Discovery, and the fuel economy improved by about 20% over the stock engine.
