    I’ve been running since 1983 , now 40 years later it’s only 3 miles ,3 - 4 days a week 9-11 minute miles but I still enjoy it at 62

That's what I call sustainable running! Better to go for many years then to be a high miles runner who needs to stop at 60 or younger after burning out

I’m 71 and running on two hip replacements. I missed 2 years because of the hip injuries (I had to wait over a year for my second surgery due to covid). And yes, I’m slower. While initially discouraged I have accepted it. However, I still work to improve time and distance. I’ve gotten to the half marathon and still intend to run a full, hips permitting. I love to run and feel fortunate to be able to do so. Your videos help provide me with some extra motivation and encouragement.

This stuff is not unusual. You get older, try new shoes that mught or might or might not happen. Take fewer risks, cross train, become analytical.

I did my first marathon at 72 with a hip replacement/use Galloway’s run/walk method. Will do a half & full marathon this year. So run/walk has really helped me stay in the sport.

Your perspective on #8 is excellent! It's all about consistency and mindset. Bekele is nearly 42, ran his best marathon in 5 years and qualified for arguably the hardest national team at the moment (Kenya is a close second). At our local marathon, the winner was also 42 and ran a hugely respectable 2:32. If your mindset is good, you have a MUCH better chance of delaying the inevitable. I'm 34 at the moment and feel like my best running days are still ahead. And once you finally do slow down, I don't see why you can't reset your PBs every decade :)

hits hard for me. throughout 2012 going into 2013 i was running to drop weight to enlist in the military. went from 210lbs to 155lbs in roughly a year by the end of it instead of once a day i was running 1.5 miles twice a day, rain or shine, and then twice a day with roughly 20lbs on my back. enlisting was my motivation. Basic not only kept me consistent but improved me. then the military screwed me over soon after getting out of basic.
over a year's worth of hard work and effort slapped in my face like it was nothing. I haven't had any real drive or motivation since and this was 11 years ago.

Hey Ben...I have some advice for your viewers. "Savor the moment" or "These are the good old days". In other words, stop looking back at what you were as a runner (or as a person). This is where you are now an enjoy it. I know I sure did not when I was a younger runner. What was easy for me when I was 30 is now hard (or impossible) now I am 65. I am trying to enjoy every day as a runner now and take my wins in any form possible. That could be just enjoying a pleasant run in the morning air, a great workout, or an occasionally a good race.

I started running/jogging last summer after I had a breast reduction surgery (so much better only needing one bra rather than two or three!). I did a couch to 5K program and ran my first (and so far only) race on Thanksgiving. It was a 4 mile race so a bit longer than a 5K. After taking several months off, I’m starting to get back into it.
I don’t know that I’ll ever do anything more than a 5K or 4 mile race. I also like having a variety of different aerobic workout activities. Dancing, hula hooping, and walking are my top three. I like shooting hoops and kicking a ball around too.
I will say that while I usually feel okay mentally after a workout and sometimes it might boost my mood, if I already am in a low mood then sometimes a workout might not make me feel better mentally, or might even make me feel worse. I had a panic attack shortly after starting one jogging session last summer as I had tried an online strength class right before and couldn’t keep up. I felt stupid and like a failure; it carried into my running workout and I had to stop because I started sobbing. Luckily I had brought my basketball just in case because I decided to just shoot hoops that day instead.
I will say that alcohol is gross. I rarely have any (using a tiny bit of Bailey’s liquor in a milk shake is what I’d have most and even that is only on a rare occasion). I sometimes cook or bake with alcohol.

When you’ve been running for a very long time, none of the things you mention is a hard truth. Experienced runners accept all of this with equanimity. The hard truth is that the injuries become inevitably more frequent and longer lasting until one day you realize it’s been two years since your last big race and you still can’t manage to run for more than half an hour because your body is too fragile. That’s the hardest truth and it happens to every long term runner eventually unless they quit or die. It’s not a challenge to want to keep going. The challenge is to be unable to keep going even though it’s the thing they want the most.

Great video and really relatable Runner for 19 years here, 30 marathons and had my fair share of persistent injuries, motivation dips and on the flipside, euphoric training blocks and races. In this for the long run! The discipline vs motivation thing is so true. You don't need motivation if you have discipline. And that discipline can mean realising you're burnt out and take a few days off / cross-train / immerse yourself in your other passions for a while. I'm currently in physio trying to get back the speed I had in my mid 20s, I know I still have it in me. Never give up is my mantra.

I’ve been running for 50 years with a minimum 5 days a week every week. Now it’s an enjoyable habit and some days are just 2 or 3 miles. Your discipline and consistency points are key. Going out on a cold wet night after a long day at work was often tough. Yes I’m slowing down - 4 hour marathons instead of the 3 hours of 20 years ago but age related performance ratings keep me motivated.

I've been running since early 2002 but only competitively from 2002 to 2006. Took many long breaks here and there went through a weight lifting phase from 2015 to 2019 gained weight and got injured had surgeries so I stopped. So from 2021 at the age of 34 I started running again focused on the usual path complete 5k, 10k, half marathon. Then took another year off did a 15k and did my first official marathon at the age of 36.
I'll never do that again marathons are just too much in terms of training. So I decided to just focus on half marathons just the right amount of distance to train and compete in.

I think the strength in triathlon training is that the range and variety involved in the training makes it more sustainable than running alone. Also, being in a club helps make the training more of a social thing than a chore. I would recommend cross training (triathlon is not the only example) to any runner to avoid injury and keep things fresh.

As a 62-year-old runner yeah I’ve slowed down but I find a lot of happiness and joy in racing still and I focus on my age group Saturday. I had a mouth 12 so I just got off an injury so my first run first race untrained and I felt happy that I felt I finished I think 10 out of 25 in my group, so untrained that I was happy with that but I really like hitting that podium like I used to dream of but I get to hit it more often because I’m in an old 60 year old group. It’s still a lot of fun. It’s actually even more fun you know you’re shocking people around you you’re doing what your age even though I’m 62 I’m not 162 but it’s fun

I did a couch to 5 K last summer and there was one day that my anxiety gave me a panic attack as I was trying to do one of my jogging workouts. I had to stop and decided to play basketball instead which still allowed some running but in shorter spurts. Part of my panic attack was that I had tried an online strength class right before and fell behind/couldn’t keep up. I felt stupid and like a failure, and the feelings carried on into the running workout.
In general, while I usually will feel better mentally (or at least stable) after a workout, if I’m already in a low mood then sometimes a workout will not help boost my mood or might even make me feel worse mentally.

Number 4 hit home. I’ve been running long distance for 14 years, 10 years consistently. Never had an injury. 6 days ago I decide to skip 2 rest days and ran a half marathon, 15k, 5k, and another 15k back to back.
That did it. The whizz and pop of my right calf significantly destroyed my ability, at least for now. Never had an injury, never stretched, never warmed up ever. My eyes are finally opened and I’ll never make that mistake again

4:55 Isn't it better just to use the shoe until it brakes down?
I'm a hobby jogger. Not a runner. This is what I changed. I stooped binning a runner. My challenge now is doing 3-4 jogs a week for 4 weeks, or doing 6 organized 10 km runs in winter. It is not- 5k under 20' or 10 km under 50' any more. I also don't think about jogging a ultra-marathon. I did my share of that.
I jog 3-4 times a week for around 1-2 h in a park or woodland. I'm 45 years old. I jog for 10 years now. I don't feel need for more and WHO seas that is enough to stay in shape at my age.
At first I was changing shoes every 1000 km or so. They ware a little wasted, but to be honest I did it cause buying new ones gave me a short burst of new motivation to run. And 3 years ago I stopped doing so. I just buy one shoes and ware them until they fall of my feat (last ones lasted around 1600 km and then one of them almost separated form the sole on a run in the rain). My time on 10 km is worse, but I'm not jogging for a better 10 k XD.
Also- don't be easy to believe anyone, who seas they will reuse your clothes. They most likely want to relive you of buyers guilt, to buy new ones from them. I tried to give my used clothes directly to hospitals, social services, even drunken house. Everybody told me the same: we don't need your trash. Wright now there is enough new clothes produced and not soled or given back for every pour man in the world and heaps of those scare in Africa. If we keep on buying clothes for the pleasure of buying, there will be more. Clothes can be made form recycled (down-cycled) material, but are not recycled them self.

#3. Been running for a decade so I feel foolish with my dumb mistake. Last weekend I thought I’d be fine running without socks as it felt okay at first and the weather was hot. It was a technical trail run. At the end had blisters that ripped open on both arches. And this weekend was my main race. My first half after 6 years and was hoping to beat 2 hours. I changed bandages and slathered vasoline multiple times a day. Was able to walk after two days. Had to switch my shoes to some that were wider. But thankfully, today, I did it! Yes, I learned from the mistake but thankfully the mistake didn’t cost me my race or sub 2 half. The blisters didn’t get worse either. By Friday had new skin grow over so while pink, they are okay.

One mistake was running when I had a depressive illness. To be fair I didn't know it was depression yet, It was my first time and it hadn't clicked that I was depressed. I was also doing a big run after not having run for a few months.
It was the usual amount of discomfort and I felt great immediately afterwards, but in the days that followed all I could remember was how uncomfortable I had felt. Which wasn't like me. It put me off for more than a year.

Even physically I became lankier but still stronger, and mentally I became more structured and I attained a no-nonsense approach to life but to my doctor’s and my family’s chagrin, I became more resistant towards suffering/pain too. I would not realize, much less tell others when I was truly exhausted, winded or in pain because I somehow just became used to digging deep so situations were you should request a timeout were simply normal to me. lol

I have been running for 47 years with few injuries (no, I am not genetically gifted). Great video except for a few points: Running is an everyday thing like brushing ones teeth, but you won't be able to run every day. Crap happens. Your best running days are when you feel the worst and you will get very high. Slow down on those days. Base training is year-round and avoids injuries with proper resistance training. The high volume of easy running is not by choice. There is no way one can run any faster after a hard day unless the workout wasn't done properly. There is no way I could have run hard today after a four mile threshold run in the afternoon and after heavy lifting in the evening yesterday. No medium stuff. Work up to sprinting (repeats) and mostly easy runs (base training). Intervals are for peak training only.

Learn about WAVA [World Association of Veteran Athletes] "Age-Graded-Tables" & Calculators which grade performance level in road running in the context of gender and age. It's a way to measure performance in the context of age. I've been running for 45 years, am 61 and the 3:23 I clock now is actually a better performance than the 2:59 I clocked when I was 45 (Marathon). Despite getting older and slower you can perform at a higher level.

If you want a great bunch of supportive runners to encourage you to your Autumn marathon, do consider joining Class 2 Marathon training. On top of Ben and Mary's advice, you get a great community - Severine, Class 1 (and future Class 3 member)

You are so right about the age thing - love your focus on that. I'm 51 and I know I've pb's still to come (5k pb was just a year ago and I know I've much more) - and I'm chasing a guy who is 60 and just ran a 5k sub 17:30 - no typo. Then you've Shane Healey who ran 800 in 2:02 recently at 55. Yeah, as you said, it will catch up, but not as soon as we think. Like I say on my channel (the inconsequential runner): Age is my challenge, not my excuse.

Discipline over motivation, interesting I've always had issues with motivation or (motivated people), especially when they seem so ineffective. I always thought it was a skills/talent thing people lacking in skills and or talent compensated with motivation. Though now that I think about, why wouldn't the motivated people go out and get themselves some skills... Ah ha the missing piece, they don't have discipline. But they stay late and work hard say the contrarians, but that's the thing they don't have the discipline to do the right things. Good stuff.

I had some when I started running (but I was 102 kg when I started) - and bought a simple hand-held massage roller which worked wonders. I think in my case it might have been because I transitioned from heel striking to forefoot/midfoot running.
