Do not push the spring-loaded center socket to lock it, will damage brass claws inside. Push outer piece to lock it.

I'm thinking of using them as a method of attaching leather saddlebags to a motorcycle if they are strong enough.
Maybe try and use a fish spring weigh scale for the tension measurement.

I would have to say yes, you would just need to drill And TAP the holes. The metal would also need to be protected from oxidation at the site of the hole so that it doesn't stain your cloth.
