In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Treeing Walker Coonhounds that you might not know.
    A Quick Overview:
    Group: Hound Dogs
    Weight: 45 to 80 pounds
Height: 20 to 27 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12 to 13 years
Descended from English Foxhounds and formerly classified as an English Coonhound, the Treeing Walker earned his name by trailing game faster than other coonhounds and then treeing it until the hunter arrived. The Walker part of the name comes from Kentuckian John W. Walker, who helped develop the breed.
This classic tricolor hound has a racy build, a short, clear bark, and a strong desire to hunt. Personalities range from outgoing to bashful to protective. Like any hound, the Treeing Walker requires patient, consistent training, and plenty of daily exercise.
reeing Walker Coonhounds are loving, intelligent, confident, and enjoy interacting with humans. They make good companion dogs for an owner who understands the characteristics of the breed and is willing to work with their in-bred nature as a hunting dog. On the scent, they are tireless, alert, and intense. At home, they are mellow, sensitive lovers of comfort.
Treeing Walker Coonhounds get along well with other dogs and with children. Like most hounds, they are even-tempered and difficult to annoy or drive into aggression towards people or fellow dogs. With training, they will coexist with small animals such as cats, despite their nature as a small-game hunter.

Got my girl as a rescue. Super sweet and I love when she bays to go for her walk. Our vet says she was about 5 when we got her, we are still able to train her to heal, sit and lay down. She is a people pleaser and gets along with our other dog and our parrot. The parrot bosses both dogs, but rewards them with treats by throwing food from his bowl to the dogs.

They remind me of my beagle with a lift kit. 😆 I adore beagles. The only drawback with him is the excessive barking; I have had 2 other beagles and this one outbarks the other 2 put together. Also, you are spot on about training hounds because they are consumed by their sniffers. NEVER take them outside except on a leash or in a high fenced in yard. My 2nd beagle would run across our yard and try to climb our 6' fence to get a squirrel. She ALMOST succeeded! Amazing dogs for sure!

It’s been nearly 2 years with my twc. Got him as a rescue and have had little to no problems with him. Humane society I rescued him from claimed that he is domesticated and therefore not much of a hunter which is what they believe he was abandoned for. But I have absolutely loved every moment with him. My twc is very attached to me, which showed his separation anxiety and caused problems when I have to leave home for work or other reasons. But a very good routine is all you need to fix that. I like to stay pretty active, so exercise is very beneficial to fixing his anxiety, along with patience and some extra training, which has all improved his anxiety for the most part. Whatever seems to calm him, I allow full access for him especially when I’m away, as long as it doesn’t seem to harm him whatsoever. Also, he is very stubborn but just a little patience and being firm in stance helps. He is very social and gets along with other dogs very well.
Overall, I couldn’t ask for a better dog and wouldn’t know what to do without him.

We rescued a beagle Walker mix. She was left to die in Kentucky but fortunately we found her and I gotta say she is a sweetheart. She only barks when she plays with other dogs but never at people. She was a jumper but was trained not to. She does have a weight problem but then again so do I. She’s 6 now, was less than 2 when we got her and I consider myself lucky I found her because she rescued me not the other way around.

My boy, Leo, came from a shelter so we'll never be 100% sure of his breed but they thought Treeing Walker Coonhound and my vet agreed. He looks a lot like several I saw in this video and so much of it rings true (especially the separation anxiety) but... he is the laziest dog I have ever had the pleasure of living with! When I got him, I read up about TWCs and brainstormed ways to keep him entertained but the reality ended up being he just wants to lay around a lot. I've had him for five years now and he gets regular vet care and the only issue he's ever had were a couple of ear infections. So the laziness isn't a health issue... it's just him! He's a very loving, sweet dog. I'm so glad he came to us!

I found one last week after someone left it by the rd where I was traveling. She was pregnant and starving. She was infected with ticks and fleas.
Well after a Good bath she looks better. The vet say that she is ok to have the puppies. Give very healthy food for a week and about 4 time a day. Finally she got some energy, and last night she give birth to a 6 healthy and cute puppies. I’m very glad that we safe and maybe happier from now on. She is about 10 years old. ❤️🐶❤️

Aww that's amazing. My fiance and I adopted a puppy who was also found on the side of the road, malnourished and eaten up with worms. We think he's possibly a treeing walker coonhound/German shorthaired pointer mix. He is the best dog! So easy to train, and he's very well behaved for a puppy. He's about 7 months old now. I fell into this breed due to a marriage that didn’t last. I hunted big game with these dogs for ten years. I made it out alive with Mack-18 mos old at the time. 2 years later My Mack and I have overcome severe separation anxiety With an odd win of getting one of the pups my ex and I bred back. Cyrus is 6 mos. younger than Mack. At first Mack was sure I brought him the wrong dog…but now they spoon the day away after their 10 mile run. I can’t live without them.

We lost our GSD almost exactly a year ago, and we found a great dog to adopt. We happened across an accidental love connection between a purebred bereding female Siberian Husky and a purebred breeding TWC. Needless to say, the colorations are gorgeous, and we literally have a purebred mutt. As a pup, her colors looked more like a Husky, but with the hanging ears of the TWC. As she has gotten older, she's taken on more of the white in the shoulders and flanks, and the dark around the eyes has shifted to such a light brown that you'd think it was white if you didn't pay attention. I've trained her in obedience and walking well with manners on a loose leash, and working towards fully off leash via e-collar. We're also working on leash pressure right now for silent commands. For example, with fingertip pressure I can put her into a sit, stand, and down. I'm working on a leash pressure "focus" command now because she's started ignoring the verbal on walks, and I don't want to allow that regression. She has a double coat of the Husky, so she and I both prefer to walk at night where it is cooler. And happily, when the rabbits are out and about. As with other TWC, she'll stay in a good heel position on walks, but she'll catch scents while walking, and now and then she'll break heel position and target lock on a scent. She will easily go into a sit while on a walk when asked, even with a rabbit 10 feet in front of us. She'll stay there and not break, even after the rabbit bolts. As a reward for good behavior, I'll allow her the fun of going after the rabbit. She never goes where she last saw the rabbit, she always goes to where it was sitting, catches the scent, then scent tracks the exact path of the rabbit until I have to stop at someone's property line. She's a great dog and she gets along great with our older dog. They have never had a moments trouble with resource guarding or aggressiveness with our other dog or out outdoor cat. She even loves our bearded dragon, although we've never had them each alone, our TWC will sit with her nose an inch or two from the terrarium, and the bearded dragon will get against the glass, both just investigating the other with great curiosity. Both Husky's and TWC are known to be vocal breeds, so we opted to name her "Echo". A fitting name. However, very oddly, she almost never makes a sound, except for that Awoowoowoo when our older dog has a toy she wants to play with, which is always the toy our other dog has. She's not a nanny that checks in on people like our GSD did, but she is a loving and fun dog, who is also intelligent and independent. She's been a pleasure to train, even for me who is taking online dog training through DIYK9.com, thus, I'm learning as I go. I want to learn to train her to hunt rabbits and such. I'm considering getting into falconry, and Red-Tailed hawks, Red-Shouldered hawks and Harris' hawks like hunting squirrels and rabbits, and even if I do not decide that is for me, I'd love to allow my TWC to do what she loves - scent track prey for the love of it! We adopted our TWC mix at about 10 weeks old, and she's almost 14 months old now. Just make sure to give them plenty of mental and physical exercise. If not, you're more likely to find things chewed up and shredded that you don't want chewed and shredded. The last time Echo did something like this, it was a rainy day and she had little exercise, so I blame myself more than the dog, but more training will fix this.

TWCs are excellent family dogs; they do require a lot of positive reinforcement training and exercise. If you have time, money, and patience TWCs are a great fit for adopting into a sensitive, active, and sensible family. Too many hounds are discarded because they "won't hunt." 🐾

My sister found Mr.Rigsby behind the Wal-Mart, digging through garbage. He was already over a year, and totally untrained.
Ah, how I miss that loud, cat-treeing (lol, he eventually feared the kitty when it grew up), smell chasing pain in my arse.
To be fair, my sister and I weren't really set up for his breed at all, lacked dog experience, and the fact that we got him fully grown and un-neutered made it worse. We made the most of it though, and he came along as we all adjusted and learned.
Used to take him on midnight hikes up Pinnacle Hill in Rochester NY where we lived near, and he'd find me the trail on a new-moon in near total darkness.
Died a few years back, after I had moved away. RIP Mr. Rigsby, you taught me a lot of important life lessons.

Una is my half TWC & Pettie rescue per DNA testing. She behaves very coonhoundish with her scent tracking, barking and baying. I got her in the city but moved out to nowhere Hells Canyon area. She is in her element and has blossomed from insecure to owning 10s of square miles. She has chased off bears, cougars and a couple of wolves without getting too close even if against my wishes at the time. Not the easiest dog to train with her constant testing of the air and sensitivity but I love her. Now if she'd just share the bed.

He was under the title of beagle puppy and he looked like a beagle when he was a puppy as he started growing i could tell he wasnt a beagle or not fully anyway and had something else in him. With the apple lense they suggested the dog looked like some sort of coonhound and there no denying it! 🤣🤣🤣 i dont care what breed he is or what he isnt. He is an amazing dog. Very cuddly and lovely amazing with other pets and people and kids. Best of all, HE DOESNT BARK AT ALL! Its actually very rare that he barks lol. The only problem with his is he is one years old and he still potties inside ☹️ but were still working in it and will forever work it in if its tje way it needs to be. He is my best bud and dont know what id do without him ♥️

They are amazing dogs! Got ours locally from someone that couldn't keep him @ age 1.5 years old. Name is... Walker Texas Ranger. haha These dogs need a LOT of walking or running if you don't have a large yard. They're very gentle with humans and love people.

Mine was a mix of a Seppala Husky. He is a handsome pup. Had him for six years and I had to give him up. I miss him a lot. I rather have a home, I moved into an apartment and I know how active he is. I have a daughter so my daughter comes first. But still I miss my pup a lot. I go see him here and there. The new owners sends me photos to keep me updated on how he is doing. He also has three other dogs to play with at his new home and the home is fenced! So he is living his best life.

My pup daisy hates being alone , when we take her to the store she literally hates being on the leash. She just want to follow all the smells and starts barking. I love my pup

My boy has a great recall with no training. Also resource guards pretty bad, to the point he bites anyone who tries to make him get off the couch. Otherwise he’s amazing. Very goofy, uses his paws so much more than any dog I’ve seen or owned.

We have had our Maddie for a year and I have been training her in upland hunting. She is probably one of the best dogs I have ever owned. I think she is easier to train the our Germany Short Haired, Bruno.

These are NOT even HALF TREEING WALKER COONHOUNDS in the photos!!! I breed them and show them! You have mixed dogs and English coonhounds plus beagles mixed! This i showing people the wrong information.

So I’ve mentioned my English setter x Treeing walker coonhound. I’ve come to this video to see if he has more features like his other breed. Funny thing is I don’t think he matches quite well with this line of breed either. What has my family done to my dog to make him so different???

Over 60% in the video isn't treeing walker coonhounds. This video is very inaccurate. I have treeing walkers that are registered in 4 different registries and MULTIPLE SHOW WINS.

I hear these dogs need a ton of exercise? Is this true. I got 1 acre of fenced in yard. Is this enough for one?

Yes it is. That's about what I have for a fenced yard. I have 4 dogs and exercise/play with them every day.
These dogs are very loving and they bond to their human very fast.
      Sweet dispositions too.

🤦🤦 They are easy to train If they are in the right owners. Walkers are VERY VERY eager to please their owners. They bring back prey once killed to them. They are not VERY GOOD Family dogs! They are scent driven, very hyper ( most hyper of all hound breeds if purebred). Just some things that needs added. So many people message me asking if I'll take walkers due to their hyperness and it not working with small children. They also usually ARE NOT good with cats and small animals due to prey drive 🤦. But the treeing walker is Usually black white and tan hound with VERY LITTLE OR NO TICKING! The red ones and red and blue ones are English coonhounds and I also breed them!

I've got 7. 6 are deer hunting dogs. one is retired because she is blind. They are a joy and a pain in the ass. 2 are housedogs. The seeing housedog gets confused when she is on the leash for walks. She's busy sniffing tracks, but anything on wheels, or suddenly appearing, is a threat to me in her opinion, and she turns into a guard dog, with aggressive barking and lunging to warn the threat off. I have a small frame and while I appreciate her protection, it's a workout to keep her controlled.
There is actually a little known distinction about Walker Coonhounds. There are treeing, and there are running. They all look like beagles and foxhounds, But some can climb trees, while others can just run and stand at the base of the tree. You won't know what you got until you see it in action. We have a litter of mostly running Walker Coonhounds, but then there is Sadie, and she can climb her way out of the chain link fence. One day she'll figure out how to climb a tree, but for now, she's running the hooves off of the deer.
They are good with other animals, and family members. From my experience they bond to one person, but they also show loyalty to everyone in the household. There's just a pecking order. Sometimes that changes based on who has the snacks.
The not blind house dog has a pet kitten. They chase each other, and wrestle. The Walker dog lets the kitten get the the upper hand most of the time, and I have many pictures of the Walker dog on her back with the kitten biting into her throat. When she's tired of the game, she puts her pawn down on the kitten's head and shoves her on the ground. Then the kitten lays on her back for some nuzzling and grooming commences.
These dogs can have a lot of personality. They need a home environment where they can run and chase. Apartment living is not suitable for this breed. Please don't subject them to it. Even in a large home, if there isn't a yard to let them out, they will be miserable. If you can afford it, get the dog a Garmin Alfa GPS Collar, a hand held tracking device, find some woods, and let the dog run. Be prepared to drive like the devil to head off the dog at the next intersection. If you can find large swaths of land, that's where you want to turn the dog out. Running these dogs is like driving Nascar. If you can use a beat up vehicle, you'll be better off. You're going to get familiar with pig trails, and you're probably going to lose a side mirror or two. Scratches along the side of the vehicle go with the territory.
This is a great breed, but you need to make sure that you have the appropriate home.
