@@vdub1959 we have shale/clay in orange county where i live anyway.. and a regular sized backhoe couldnt even dig in the ground here.. It broke both of its brackets that hold the bucket together.. and those are 2 inchs thick nearly. Plus the ground is saturated with all the rain weve had.. im sure a shovel can dig it in right now. But not dry hard compacted shale which is clay compacted into a rock

ive done that before and if someone told me i had my pick between an excavator or a shovel to dig the trench i would pick the excavator, work smarter not harder
