    I once owned a ‘62 Studebaker Lark that the windshield washer nozzles were so far out of adjustment that the washer fluid would be shot completely over the roof of the car and land on the back glass and trunk lid. I will be doing a similar conversion to my ‘64 VW Beetle, since the pressure for the windshield washers are provided by the air in the spare tire! Even windshield washer technology has vastly improved in the last 70 years!

      I once had an old FIAT on which the best position I could get the washer nozzle in was so that it would wash the windscreen on the car behind me. It wasn't really ideal, but it was funny...

    I absolutely LOVE this Caddy of yours. I love what you've done with it, what you continue to do with it, how you are patiently fixing one thing at a time so as not to get "burned out" on the restoration of this car...I think your approach is the perfect one. I feel like I know this car personally now. LOL

    Those universal pumps are strong once they do not run dry. But it was a pain in the ass making them work on my old Chevy and hard as well on my old Catalina that never had a windshield washer at all leaving the factory. Watching your Cadillac uploads from the beginning I learned that everyhing on those great Caddies was much more complicated than on simple GM cars

    Nice job, Ben. No worries about it squirting too high. When you are driving down the road, the wind will blow the fluid onto the windshield lower.

    I think the total electric conversion will work well. We had a 53 F 100 Ford pickup, 239 V8. You quickly learn where the brakes are with a vacuum system. Hope you are safe with this crazy virus.

    Wow All problems aside you have to admire the quality and engineering that went into those parts back in the day.

    Ben the wiper arms come off without having to loosing that nut. Pull out on the washer arm and then up. When you pull out on the arm you will notice that the arm is spring loaded to the arm head. Pulling on it allows just enough length for the arm to clear the track. Once the track is cleared, now you can pull up to release the arm from the cam gear.

    It was good to hear you were able to help out Daniel Restodan with his Corvette. You can get a cone washer kit at your local hardware store plumbing section. The kits have many sizes.

    That rubber piece reminds me of the silicon buds you get with in-ear earphones. They are also very stretchy and could work in this application.

    Yes, just like others have said. Go to any home improvement store and look at faucet washers. I replaced an outdoor water spicket handle seal and it was cone shaped. Probably perfect for what you need. Should be able to stretch a little over the end of the tube. My washer seal was really soft and I had to be careful for awhile not to close the handle too tight. You can probably ream it out if you need to.

    Looking at that rubber "nub", it reminded me of old "faucet washers". You might try your local Hardware store. Look through their faucet washer assortment. Most of those old washers had a 8/32 or 10/32 screw going through the center and came in a variety of outside diameters and they had flat ones and "beveled" ones. The beveled ones looked very similar to your "nub".

    The little vacuum block's that you buy in an assortment for blocking vacuum ports on carbs and intakes might work! That is the first thing I thought of when you said it was leaking and was dome-shaped.

    There are little umbrella like seals that are used in repair kits for sink faucets that might work for you as far as the seals are concerned, they're something like a miniature valve stem seal.

    I always look forward to seeing the Cadillac get some love and attention. I've followed its progress and always enjoy the updates. The existing paint looks good when it is wet. Do you daydream about eventually changing the exterior finish; maybe preserving the existing exterior?

      The car has been painted before so no need to preserve what is left. Eventually it'll get painted

    • @montymatilda
      @montymatilda 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheCorvetteBen I always look forward to the progress as well, and others you do. Nice work providing a couple of safety upgrades for the Caddy. They make perfect sense to me. I never could understand what possessed the auto manufacturers to use vacuum wipers. Of course I know money was an issue, but really?? In the 1950's?? Especially with all the other great stuff they were doing to the cars. I could see it now -- "I want the most expensive car you have but it has to have those wipers that stop when you tromp on the gas". Just silly.

    • @discerningmind
      @discerningmind 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@montymatilda Vacuum wipers didn't have to stop or slow down. Ford fixed the issue by adding a second portion to the fuel pump that provided constant vacuum. Any cheapness was in not using that type of system. It seems to me vacuum motors were implemented because attempts at small 6V motors weren't viable years ago, particularly with generators not putting out much electricity was at a premium.

    • @montymatilda
      @montymatilda 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@discerningmind Hmmm. I had not heard of that system and never ran across one back then. I wasn't very old and didn't see a lot of vacuum systems or 6v cars (which would barely turn themselves over) and by the time I got a car, it had electric & alternators. I guess that I only drove older, crappy vacuum system cars on the car lot. Could have been in need of maintenance but all of them reacted the same for me.

    on my 59 the wiper arm telescopes away from the pivot to clear that guide. Then remove arm like normal. It was a few years ago but I was surprised at the engineering of the wiper system. I think that guide is to ensure wiper blade contact with the glass all the way around the curve

    The answer is to find a piece of hose that has a tight fitting I.D. then mount it into the bezel in a silicone bed. Obviously block off the fluid section of the bezel prior to doing this, then remove the blocking material after the silicone dries. Isn't the Caddy 6V? Are you using an inverter? Or, Is the w/w pump working on 6V? Ben, you didn't show us the little one and your wife. All we could see was a faint image in the windshield. I enjoyed when the dogs have turned up, so your wife and baby are just as welcome.
