Fun fact, Murray Head is the older brother of English actor Anthony Stewart Head who's best known for playing Buffy Summer's Watcher on the cult-classic TV-show Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
The entire album is about a chess tournament that's taking place. Murray Head is the American player up against the Russian player. While in Bangkok, he's only interest in the chess game and not all of the distractions around him.
That's really to simplify it. It's about the Cold war, played out in form of Chess. Watch this th-cam.com/video/ls4jYHAys0w/w-d-xo.html He explains the plot really well.
and the tournament actually took place in Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. The producers/writers thought Reykjavík was boring and change the location to Thailand for the musical.
"You're talking to a tourist whose every move is among the purest...." I laugh out loud every time I hear that. My uncle almost got his third wife from Thailand, turns out she was too young when he finally met her there.
With it's catchy beat, this went to #1 in Canada/Aus/etc & BB top ten 👯 Excellent reaction 🥀 You were right wondering about the negativity - it got a ban on radio & tv there♟️
I remember this song and it is so catchy, other then this song I don't remember any other song by Murray Head. Never been in Asia but I think it captures it in song???
Got to commemorate Abba for creating such a beautiful song for Murray Head to play that was adopted for a play called chess it's really quite disturbing how Thailand won't even allow the song to even be played there when the reality is the song is about the purity of chess and is not diminishing Thailand in any way it's just pointing out that there are distractions just like there are anywhere else in the whole point is it's about the purity of chess how the championship game was held there. I believe the American chess player they were referring to is Bobby Fischer and he was going up against the Russian whose name I can't remember.
Oh you sweet summer child. 1. The reference of Yul Brynner might be one reason for ban as Thai government is still salty about King and I 2. It would be hard to find a single line in the song that wasn't innuendo that implied that Bankok was pretty much sex tourism capital in 80's (which it was). So if the authorities are trying to break the image this song is just rubbing salt to the wounds.
I might be the only man who would NOT stumble in Bangkok. Not only am I against all forms of casual sex and prostitution, etc, but I also don't feel like a sexy man that any woman could want. So if some child comes running up to me in the street with sexual offers or whatever, rather than get excited by the prospect of a cheap holiday bang in bangkok, I would become depressed and suicidal thinking about the horrible state of the human condition. I'd go back to my hotel room, where I'd contemplate the sad reality of why people offer themselves to strangers in the street. How they exchange their dignity and humanity for food and iPhones. I will never go to Bangkok. The city wouldn't like me...

You guys cover songs no one else covers and I thank you for that and I like seeing Indians react bc they are a great people.
His reaction and interpretation was spot on, the video actually has a lot of checkered flooring and using chess pieces
Epic flute solo there, including that blowing at the end.....I used to love this song when I was a kid, my friends and I used to laugh at it.

Have a listen to 'Chess' one day. Great musical from the 80's. It still holds it's own.

over 30 years later and this song is still incredible to listen to now.
This is one of a characters from the musical Chess. It is an arrogant man who thinks he is above everything and everyone.
I'm surprised you didn't react to the video. It's great.
The album version has a longer intro, which IMO is much better than the single version: th-cam.com/video/dXJnyyy3_t8/w-d-xo.html
Swedish Musicians........Many of them played on all ABBA records
