“Song For A Winters’ Night” (Gordon Lightfoot) - Benjamin Williams cover

- Title says it all. Benji does more Lightfoot. What more could one ask for?
In all seriousness though, I love this tune so much. It’s definitely in my personal top 10 Gord songs. Here in Edmonton the weather’s a bit warm for wintertime, but the snow’s still here so I’d still say it’s a win for Old Man Winter. Y’all know him, he’s pretty stubborn.
Anyhow, hope y’all enjoy this. And, until next time... stay safe, stay sane, and as always... stay sanitary.
Love & Mercy,
Ben.

Oh and I know if Gordon was here he would say I love this young fellas rendition of my song, god bless
I want you to know young fellow I thought you done a wonderful job on this song and your Canadian brother mr lightfoot is looking down and saying, my songs live on through the talents of our young throughout our lovely country of Canada, Gordon light foot was a favorite of mine also and I want to thankyou for presenting his song so well, god bless
I appreciate you swinging by to say this, thanks so much :)
I love Benjamin’s songs very much, hope you can play more
Thanks so much!
I’m still playing quite frequently, it’s just a matter of getting more content out here on TH-cam which I’ve slowly but surely started to get back to doing again 🙂
I loved your rendition. I heard a little Paul Simon in there, too. I like the way you handled the bridge between verses, and your fingering technique through the whole song. I agree, Gord would have loved your version. I hope he heard it before he passed last May. Thank you for uploading this to TH-cam. Stay warm. Spring is almost here.
I appreciate your kind words. Thanks for stopping by.
Well, up here in Edmonton it's started to get quite warm. Spring is coming along fine so far.
Beautiful performance. Your attention to detail is apparent.

Beautiful job my friend!
Gord would absolutely love it too! Bruce
Thank you so much :)
Wow! love it. Thanks for playing one of my favourite songs. Thank you
You're most welcome! Glad you liked this :)
Excellent! My favorite Gordon song. You did it justice…stayed true to his arrangement…but…no jingle bells at the end? Still your guitar work is amazingly on point. Thank you! ❤️🙏🏻
Thanks, I appreciate the kudos 🙂
On the jingle bell front, well… this was recorded and uploaded in the thick of the pandemic, so I was most likely too broke to even afford jingle bells at the time. Plus I’m not the biggest Christmas type of guy (working on that though). I think next time I decide to post a cover of this tune, I might take you up on the jingle bell suggestion. Hope you subscribe to stay tuned!
Very nice guitar picking style. I love this song. Thanks for posting!
@@dakotachamp1892 Glad you enjoyed this!
Well Benjamin you certainly do this wonderful song justice. From an old codger here, I was delighted that you carry forward the Great Man's ( Gord ). work. Your playing is impressive and over the strings there's a lovely balance and certainty , and fine vocal too. Superb job young man.😊
I really appreciate your thoughtful comment Jim! Thanks for tuning in :)
Beautiful!❤
Thank ya! :)
Hello Benjamin. Everything you do is on guitar magic. I hope your life is going well and that you have much joy. Thank you so much for posting this. Gordon's death is particularly hard . I'm glad I get to hear you play his songs.
Thanks Dan.
Yeah, Gord's death hit me really hard for a couple weeks. Forever grateful that he'll live on through his music.
Really nice job on one of Gordon's best songs, Benjamin. Thanks for keeping his music alive.
You're most welcome! Thanks for tuning in! :)
@@MusicbyBenjamin Hey Ben, have you ever thought of doing some tutorials on the Lightfoot songs you do? It would help greatly for us barely talented folks to at least find the exact cords that Gord used!
@@truthvsgop1216 This idea has been brought up to me in the past, and I'm definitely open to doing something like that sometime in the distant future.
@@MusicbyBenjamin I would LOVE to have the opening chord progression on 'Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald' (Hint, LOL)
I’m back again listening to your song again we’ll Gordon’s song but you do it so we’ll I came back to hear you again, and I do wish you so well, so very much that you can inspire other young artist, I know everyone loves Gordon lightfoot thankyou

Fantastic as usual. I'm from England, by the way, so I know what a long winter feels like too, but hopefully, Here Comes The Sun.
Indeed, my friend. Thanks for stickin’ around!
Top drawer…. Good cover… well performed.. yes.. you did it justice and the rest… well done.. 👏🙏👏👏👌☺️
Thanks so much! Cheers :)
Love your work, Ben, excellent stuff. I enjoy playing Mr. Lightfoot songs too, but I wish I had your talent and skill. You've already helped me with one particular chord on this song, and your earlier posts are incredible too, so keep 'em coming, Gordon would be smiling! Steve (UK).
Thanks for stopping by Steve :)
You nailed that bastard!
Ey thanks!
¡Bravo! Cada día tocas mejor. Muchas gracias por tu música.
¡Muchas gracias! Ese es el objetivo, al menos intentar mejorar día a día.
Good job with that!!
Excellent cover of one of my favourite GL songs. Well played. Great attention to the guitar arrangement.
Thanks so much! I appreciate you stopping by to check it out! :)
A wonderful arrangement of one of my favorite Gord tunes! Thanx for sharing and well done young fella!
Hey thanks so much! Cheers! :)
Gord Is envious of your guitar playing
I'm sure he would have been, to a point. I'm just as, if not more envious, of his master songwriting skills. What a treasure he was. RIP.
That's the best job anyone I've seen play the guitar intro to this song solo. I've been working on it recently, but you have it down perfect.
super rendition Ben, and your play is spot on, this Simon and Patrick shines, made by Godin,s guitar family, keep up , you,re very talented, Cheers from Montreal , I, m a big fan of GL also.
Thanks so much! Cheers from Edmonton!
Great sounds from your guitar Benjamin .. ♬‧*˚✧♬‧*˚✧. Very nice cover of a favourite Gordie song. I lived in cold Alberta for many years.. brrr. Glad not to be there anymore. Again.. fabulous picking!
Thanks so much! Nice to hear from you :)
Yeahhhh living where the air hurts your face is a major drag sometimes. If I wasn't so lucky to have many great family and friends here I'd probably be something of a drifter. At least I'm in the city too - not nearly as frigid here as out in the boonies can get.
That was wonderful! You have joined my favorites doing this tune. Gord, Tony Rice and yourself!
what an amazing voice Benjamin, your songs are calming very intense,
Thank you!
Thats one of my favorite Gordon Lightfoot songs. You pick the notes nearly perfectly!
Thanks so much! :)
Top shelf cover. I can't believe I ever claimed to know that song after hearing that. Thanks.
Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Jonathan! :)
Beautifully covered, and you make that guitar ring like a bell.
Thanks a ton!
Nice job from a B.C. Neighbour . You’re doing his tune beautifully .
Thank you so much!
nicely done! Beautiful song! 👋👋❤
Fantastic!
Thanks!
Excellent cover. Do you have any references for those who want to learn this particular arrangement in guitar? It’s slightly different (and better!) than the other guitar lessons on TH-cam. Cheers from Jacksonville, Florida, USA!
Thanks Robb.
I didn't use any references or tutorials to learn the song, just picked it up by ear. I've thought about getting into doing tutorials in the distant future for certain tunes I do with a unique arrangement, so you might possibly see one for this.
Well sung and well played.
Great Job Ben!!
Thanks Jeff! Cheers!
Hi Benjamin can you do a song call Carolina in the pines by Michael Martin Murphy ? It’s a tribute to a young friend I lost in a auto accident Tuesday , she loved the woods and hiking , it would mean a lot to me ❤️🌲
Hey Sherie, thanks for reaching out.
When I get back into doing TH-cam videos, I’d be thrilled to give that one a try. I’m taking a break from TH-cam at the moment because I’m not satisfied with the equipment I was working with to give me good sound quality, so I’ll be upgrading hopefully by next month so I can start doing videos again. Stay tuned!
@@MusicbyBenjamin sounds awesome Thank you a lot ❤️
Still love your music still handsome young man
Thanks!
@@MusicbyBenjamin hey Benjamin can you do an updated version of the song anything for love by Gordon? I love your voice its calming and intense
@@sherbearpatson884 I sure can - consider it on my list! Thanks for tuning in!
@@MusicbyBenjamin that would be awesome! Something to look forward to talent" you have a lot . do you like Gordon's song " triangle?" I think its about sailing or being on a boat
@@MusicbyBenjamin oh I'm.right below you in Oregon
nice
Thank you!
What are the odds, the TH-camr Benjamin Williams and I have the exact same first and last names.
Little do they know that I’m just talking to myself 😉
For real though, there’s *a lot* of us Benjamin Williamses out here on the good ol’ interwebs. Hard to stand out sometimes. But I’m just out here doin’ my thang.
Please...post a lesson on how you play this...as it combines both Gordon's and Red Shea's guitar parts!
Maybe. If I do anything of the sort, it'd most likely be a basic breakdown of what I'm doing here. But, I can explain it briefly here right now - essentially, I'm transposing the general chords of those moments and spontaneously improv riffing on them in the most harmonious way possible.
I subscribed, but then unsubscribed because you told me to stay sanitary.
You dirty, dirty boy, you!! 😉
GREAT PPL ICKING DAMN SON, Y LOOK U CAN PLAY THAT AXE
THANK YA!!! :)
Beautiful!!!!
Thanks! :)
