      Nowadays, a good Samsung or Iphone has about as much processing power as this beast. But you're right... we tend to waste all that amazing power on trivial bullshit. However, some of us try to squeeze as much creativity as we can from the tech we have. This system was something I used to drool over back in 2005, and Onyx many years earlier. I always tried to beef up my PC to run the graphics packages I used, but never imagined the power these things had for their day.,

  • @DoogieLabs
    @DoogieLabs  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    These machines were incredibly expensive in their day. The Fuel was one of the less expensive SGI machines, I think it was originally around $12,000 for a decent one. By comparison the Sun Server that hosts my site fully loaded was really close to $150K in 2002.. If I wanted the Fireplane XVR-4000 graphics cards they original retailed for $30K each. This equipment was incredibly expensive, and the engineering shows it for sure. There is LOTS of gold on these.

    The graphics card and how to work (in this case the fuel model of the video) is a graphic system that will burn any graphics card for PC / Mac of the period. If in 2004 the PowerPCs were even faster than the SGI the OpenGL graphics was very powerful and had no comparison. But it was expensive to realize them so Sgi decided to switch to the use of standard graphics and if I am not mistaken he decided to use the cards produced by ATI / AMD.

    Your front side bus comparison to a first gen i7's QPI is completely wrong.
    Not only did you compare memory bandwidth vs QPI bandwidth, ignoring that RAM on an i7 is not accessed via the QPI bus (and is over 25GBs), but you also completely misstate the speed of QPI, which is 4.8 giga transfers per a second with each transfer being 16 data bits which is 9.6GBs each way (so 19.2 total) on a low end first gen i7.

    Some SGI design cues but the switch to the PC Tower form factor looks so cheap compared to an Octane and there's no room for a Dual CPU.....it does out-muscle those earlier machines in several areas at least.

    • @DoogieLabs
      @DoogieLabs  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you, when SGI sticks with their own form factors the results are much more appealing to the eye. O2, Octane, and Tezro I also personally find more appealing compared to the PC toweresk Fuel. Don't get me wrong, it is still easy on the eyes compared to 90% of all other computer chassis out there...

    • @danielbethe6307
      @danielbethe6307 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are absolutely correct all around. The pre-desktop launch tty is in a window. The system is fundamentally totally graphics-based, even rendering text mode in a single accelerated framebuffer window with a font. You can telnet in and run just a tty, with remote X11, with 3D acceleration if you're on a compatible (probably just another SGI) system too.

    I noticed there isn't any screen tearing in those demos on models like the car, martini glass, plane, and cube. It's strange that today, we still have massive screen tearing issues on even the best graphics cards outputting to a display unless we buy a monitor that supports a technology to prevent it (FreeSync and G-Sync). V-Sync doesn't count.

    • @douro20
      @douro20 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was also one of the last MIPS-based SGI systems.

    • @thedausthed
      @thedausthed 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      V-sync does "count" because that is what the SGI system is using!
      Freesync and G-Sync are systems that prevent any stuttering when the V-Synced framerate falls below the screen's refresh rate (or an integer divisor of it).

    • @mapesdhs597
      @mapesdhs597 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thedausthed Yes, all the demos he ran by default operate with vsync on, so they won't screen tear. Irony with him commenting about the CPU usage though as that most of the demos he ran are older IrisGL demos, so the only reason why the CPU is having to do anything much is because it has to use a software library called IGLOO to convert the IrisGL calls to OpenGL which are then passed to the VPro graphics. The system has a lot more oomph when using native OpenGL and optimised libs like IRIS Performer.

    • @0x1EGEN
      @0x1EGEN 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason why there isn't any screen tearing in the video is because it uses a CRT monitor. CRT monitors update differently than modern LCDs that prevents any visual screen tearing.

      Yup. The Pentium 4 equivalent MIPS R16000 is basically a i9 9900k. The V10 graphics subunit is basically a RTX2080ti. Since this machine obviously runs Windows 10 and not Unix, it will totally run modern games.
