Sarah Chen recorded the 1940s song 'Night Jasmine' in 1977, a year before Teresa Teng made a highly successful rendition of the same song. The album containing Chen's rendition, 'Cold Rain Songs,' is no longer available; we found a rare version of Chen's "Night Jasmine". Although its authenticity cannot be verified, the singer sounds exactly like Chen.
Chen's rendition couldn't compare to Teng's, and she would have been unlikely to perform it after Teng's success, except that Chen's version came a year before Teng's. But bear in mind that Chen was only 18 or 19 at the time and only just started, while Teresa was a veteran at 25 when she performed 'Night Jasmine.'
By providing this rendition, it is not our intention to make Chen sound bad (she sounded just fine here). We do our best to popularize and preserve Sarah Chen's work. Nonetheless, this song illustrates Chen's strengths and weaknesses: her vocals were excellent but not nearly as identifiable as Teng's. It sheds light on Chen's early struggles, the nearly insurmountable career challenges she managed to overcome, and the determination needed for that to happen.
