Sony have conned people with these adaptors as the EA2 and EA4 are identical, both these adapters work where the lens has the screw drive focus motor inside the lens. The difference is, the EA4 just has a bigger hole in the middle to work with a bigger sensor for the A7 series camera. The EA4 will work just the same on the A6000 series of cameras as the EA2 but SONY does not tell you this. If you buy a EA2 for your A6000 range, you'll have to buy another adapter if you upgrade to the A7 series so, buy the EA4. The EA1 and EA3 are specific to lenses that do not have the screw drive auto focus. SONY need taking to court and suing for this.
Yes its best to know the differences between the adapters. The EA2 came out way before the EA4. Not sure if Sony updated this on their websites but yes the EA2 would be for APSC and the EA4 for full frame and APSC.
No they have not conned anyone The LA EA 4 is designed for full frame and the 2 is for crop sensors Sony have designed them specifically.Using the 4 on a crop sensors will result into much lens flare using the 2 on a full frame will cause vignetting - so there is your answer
I got mine about 2 weeks ago. Haven't noticed the loss of light being a problem, yet. Using an old Minolta AF 75-300mm f4.5-5.6 and Tokina AF 19-35mm f3.4-4.5. Both support auto focus without issue and the Minolta being listed in the EXIF data. I was disappointed in the AF speed of the Sony 50mm f1.4, the Zeiss FE 55mm is much faster. I have the following lenses not to support AF, or at least the copies I used; Sony 28-70mm SAM f2.8 a99 kit lens and Tamron 70-210mm f2.8 SP (think).
eliau piha since this post I've purchased a lot of A Mount glass for use on my a7 via the LA-EA4 adapter. Auto Focus has worked on all lenses I own, speed is dependant on the lens you use and lighting. I still think the native fe lenses focus faster on the a7. Lenses from the 80s are slow. 90s might be faster. The 85mm Zeiss f1.4 is slow. The 24-70mm Zeiss f2.8 is fast.
That is exactly my question too Lofote because I've always wanted the LA-EA2 because I hate manual focusing all the time with my SAM 50 1.8 lens. Thanks John Sison
I just splurged on an A7R II and an LA-EA4, because of the large collection of Sony A-mount and Minolta glass I have amassed over the years. Alas, I found that only about a third of my lens collection is full-frame compatible, including my beloved Minolta 70-200 beercan zoom. Still, I did manage to bag a (barely) second-hand Sony nifty fifty full-frame prime reasonably cheaply, and a relatively cheap Sigma A-mount 70-200 zoom. And my invaluable Zhongyi 20mm F/2 macro and lovely 18-70 f/3/5 / f/4.5 Sony/Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens work full-frame as well as APS-C. It also means I can sell my old Sony A68 with a few useful lenses, a bag and several batteries. Might get me a bit more money to put towards a good telephoto zoom.
Oh wow thats quite a big upgrade from the a68. Its a shame that some lenses aren't made for full frame but as you said, you can sell them to fund a different lens.
I've been doing some research and I think the LA-EA3 is best with A mount G series lenses, and the LA-EA4 is best with screw type lenses and the other Non G series lenses. I did try my older version 70-200 f2.8 Sony with LA-EA4, with the 7RII and thought it didn't work quite as fast with focusing and didn't appear, to work with face detection or eye tracking. Just my short term test and from some slight research. Brian Smith has done some serious tests with the LA-EA3 & 4 and what lenses work best with ea. on the 7 series camera's.
So the main functionality of this accessory is basically to add a mirror back to your mirror-less camera? Would you say the A7/A7R focuses on-par with a regular DSLR with this attached?
No, the main function of this accessory is to allow you to put A-mount lenses on your camera so you have more of a lens variety. This will focus as fast as Sony's DSLT cameras which is as fast or faster than a DSLR.
hi......"without loosing light" which a-mount adapter is the best for Carl Zeiss or Tamron 24-70mm is lens....LAE-A3 or LAE-A4.....also do we get AF-C in LAE-A3 adapter for SONY A7....
Hi John, thanks for the nice video. How do you think that an A7 III + LA-EA4 + Sony 300 mm 2.8 SSm would work together? The LA-EA3 does not work with the A7 III and the 300 mm.
hi. I have a mount a system A850 and A77 and I want to know if a adapting the LA-EA4 adapter to a A7R will give me a fast autofocus too. Will I use the phase detection of the adapter or only the contrast AF? Will it help in wedding photography or fast moving subjects?
can i use that same adapter for the non full frame sony cams? i want to buy full frame lenses and use them on the a6000 too but still be able to use the same lenses on a full frame cam
Peace, I'm thinking about getting a VG900, my only concern is the vignetting. Now that this camera is $2000.00 I made get it instead of a 5d mk3. Does the la-ea4 solves the vignetting? Thanks
djkaneck1 I haven't seen any issues with those lenses but the LA-EA4 can't mount those lenses unless they are in Sony A-mount. If you have Canon lenses and want to mount it on VG900, its best to get a Metabones Canon adaptor or Novoflex adaptor.
Hi, I have a NEX6 and a A99. After viewing your post i decided to bye the LA-EA4. I do not have all my a-lenses here. But I am very disappointed to se that I do not have autofocus using my 70400GII. My 135F1.8 however works fine. My crappy old 16-80 does not work. I am curious to see how it works with my other a-lenses. So far I am disappointed, as my 70400 is my longest lens.
MrHasse2606 It should definitely work. Have you tried using a different adaptor? It may be faulty? I have used autofocus on that camera with that lens before.
This is a silly question but I’m new to Sony and to video. If I wanted to film something with a different aperture like 7.1 for example, can you switch into manual mode and adjust what you want to adjust, then go back to continuous AF and it holds those settings? Or will it always be in 3.5?
A question - if dust gets on the translucent mirror, does it show on pictures? The sensor has the ultrasonic vibration feature but how does this mirror limit us?
I have received my new a7 for a few days, it is much cheaper to buy from Hong Kong and ship free to USA. $400 in difference and with no tax at all. Back to the topic. I have noticed from another review that the adapter and the a-mount lens compo won't give optical image stabilization since a-mount DSLTs all have in-camera stabilization. Therefore, I am afraid that I have to wait for the future native full-frame lens for the a7 and a7r since I do want image stabilization. It comes in handy in various situations for me. Meanwhile, thanks for the informative review, it certainly helps. And, it is nice to know that the autofocus with the adapter is even faster! Cool!
John, have you tested the LA-EA4 on the A6000 body? I'd like to know if the LA-EA4 actually is slower in focus on that particular camera versus the native E-mount lenses Also, any differences in the AF system itself between the two, and does it really amount to anything important?
Yeah it is slower if you use the adaptor on the a6000 because the LA-EA4 uses its own autofocusing system which is a 15 point autofocus system. The autofocusing system on the a6000 is a lot better.
Sony's decisions here are maddening, especially considering how damn good a camera the A7r II is. The native E mount for the A7 series gives you a brightest aperture of F4 in the zooms, this doesn't help when the low light performance of the AF in the A7rII is far from the best. Also the lens range is very expensive, 10-30% more expensive, compared to like for like Canon and Nikon zooms. To use the A mount range of lenses, of which there are many more than the E mount (various brands and with f2.8 zooms), you have to buy this adapter. But what Sony don't tell you is you lose the eye detect AF in the A7rII when using it. But even if you do buy it and buy f2.8 lenses you're losing 1/3 stop of light for the AF in it. Get some brighter glass in the E Mount Sony or give me a camera like the A7rII with a native A mount. Oh, and they state it's compatible with all A mount lenses. So why are some Tamron lenses apertures not recognised? Rendering them useless on this. Lastly, put this adapter on a full frame and see how close together in the centre of the frame those focus points are. You'll cringe. Personally, I'd only recommend this for cropped sensor Sony's and even that would be struggle for the price of it.
i'm using it with nex5t, it's a very good adapter providing a really quick AF, only on thing is a bit disturbing - locking f on 3.5 when you shooting the video :/ I don't know is there any ways how to fix it?
My la-ea4 responds a bit slow when I press the release button to make a photo on my a7iii. This is the case with at least a SAL 50 F1.4 and 28-75 f2.8 SAM, but I have no other lenses to test it with. It is just a piece of a second that the camera waits before making the photo. Is that normal with this adapter? In the past I used an a mount system that responded much smoother. Thanks!
Hi, Will Steady-Shot be activated with the adapter? Since the A7 hasn't got SteadyShot are all the A-mount lenses on the A-7 without steadyshot? I have a Nikkor 70-200mm2.8 with VR. Is it possible to get an adaptoer to activate the VR on a A7?
John Sison Hi John, Thank you for your feedback. I just ordered a A7 and I'm very excited. I do have a last question for you. What is the native ISO for the A7? TheCameraStoreTV on youtube says it's ISO200... is that true?
question, If I have a A7ll,and the adapter mounted, along with the LA-Ea4 , what type of auto focus will I get . What I mean is, there are all sorts of great focus strength.. Lock on auto focus, eye auto focus, focus tracking etc. Will I have all or any of those with the adapter. Also,if not...what is the best focus setting for say shooting a wedding, or a head shots. Looking around, that part kinda has me confused. I know if I use a FE lens..everything works as it should. But I am not certain, with the LA. Thanks..ken
I've tried the adaptor with the LA-EA4 and CZ 24-70mm F2.8 on the a7ii. Looks like eye auto focus won't work. Focus tracking, lock on autofocus and other autofocus modes work perfectly fine. If I want to get the best focus on my subjects I usually use spot focus but that works perfectly for me. For other people, they may have different methods.
Hallo, I have a problem with my sony a6500 . I have a laea 4 adapter and a tamron lens 70-200 2.8. Ld di sp. Autofocus does not work and nobody knows how to fix it. Please can you help me? Best regards, Lynda
I currently have a NEX 7 with a Tamron 18-200. I want to move up to FF but I have a big issue with weight around my neck. I looked at the A7ii with the Sony 24-240 and couldn't believe how heavy and unbalanced that combo was. Tamron makes a lightweight 28-300 A mount but has no plans for an E mount. So my choice is an A99 with the Tamron or the A7ii with the LA-EA4 and the Tamron. Thoughts or advice? Thanks.
Hi john , I have a Sony a6000 and I want to get 70-400 Sony telephoto lens , do I need and adaptor , what are you thoughts on this combination,I mainly shoot weekend sports.thanks chris
+langetlikisorma You will need an adaptor. The LA-EA4 adaptor will allow you to use the 70-400 on the a6000. However, you will be using the autofocusing system of the adapter. Not the A6000.
Hello! I hear you saying that it has full frame support, and actually I see it says so on the official website, but can you tell me if it actually crops some of the sensor, or will I be able to use the whole full frame in all it's glory?
Alex Diddit You will be able to use this adapter on a full frame camera in all its full frame glory!! Just like Sony intended it to be. Also given you are of course using a full frame lens :)
Hey John I have question, so I have my A7 and I wondering if I use LAEA 4 + 18-55mm SAM II or 55-200mm A mount, do I get image crop or I get the full 24.7 MP image
Quick question for you or anyone who has had experience with this. I currently own an A77 and am purchasing an A7R. I have quite a bit of A mount glass, so the LAEA4 is a must. My question is this: should I continue to invest in A mount lenses? The A77 has some important features that are superior to at A7R and I will definitely continue to use it for certain shooting conditions and as a backup in my bag. I will be getting a standard zoom E mount so I'm not stuck on the adaptor, and will continue to purchase E mount lenses, but it is important to maximize my flexibility, especially since I already own a lot of great A mount lenses. Is it worth it to continue buying a few key A mount lenses to fill out my range across both camera bodies or would I be better off using that money for E mount glass?
+Andrew Marosvari Hi Andrew, sorry for the late reply. I would still buy A-mount glass. I'm in the same situation as well but I have invested in a few lenses on the E-mount as well.
I appreciate the reply. I actually opted to go with the a99. It has plenty of resolution for my needs and will not be subject to quite as much pixel density issues (although I know the tech in the 7r handles this issue well.) I decided that sticking exclusively with the A mount was the best option, as well as the benefit of being able to use nearly every accessory I already have for my a77. The lower price point allowed me to invest in some other equipment I needed and I feel it should serve me quite well. Best of luck with the lens issues, I'm sure they will work out just fine as Sony makes the transition easier. I also see an a7sx somewhere down the road l, but for now I will have plenty of room to grow with the 99. Thanks!
I have a question. Today there are FF mirorless cameras. But what about SLT? Will Sony continue to make cameras like A99 or , A77? Has this line a future?
I have 5 top end Sony (3 Carl Zeiss) lenses some have SSM and others Screw diven. If I buy a a7Rii should I ditch the A mount lenses and buy E mount lenses instead?
Sir, first of all I would like to say I'm not well aware of Camara and all and i watched your Sony a 6000 video on TH-cam and I'm impressed with that camera's features, especially its price and picture clarity. I need the same either dslr or mirror less. Which one is the best? can you suggest me a perfect one.
I guess it also depends on your budget. The a6000 has been one of the most popular cameras to date. With the a6300 out that sits above the a6000, I would definitely go with the a6300.
John Sison what AF do you get with the LA EA4? I'm asking because by mounting the LA EA4 on an a7/a7R/a7S you're basically bringing in the SLT technology, so I would think the AF is different than w/o adapter (?)
John Sison I was thinking of selling my metabones and L-lens for this adapter and trading it for Alpha lenses, mainly because I am fed up with the focus speed. Would that be wise still despite the translucent mirror?
Hi John, thanks for the advice. I plan to get A7s camera for street photography and some documentary video shoots. So I'd prefer sharp autofocus, also for video. I wonder if this is the adapter to use for my Tamron AF28-75mm f2,8 lens (Canon mount) or you have other suggestions? What do you think?
This adaptor would not be able to use any Canon lenses or Canon mount lenses. Only Sony. An adaptor you may want to consider is the Metabones EF adaptor to Sony E-mount.
Great review. Before I shell out on one, I'm keen to know if this would also fit if I were to add a battery holder to the A6500. I say this as you mentioned that it would be best to attach the LA-EA4 to a tripod rather than to the camera and wanted to know if the adapter would still fit on with a battery grip as well. Thanks in advance.
Could someone explain this to me please? Why does the light have to go to a different AF sensor than the one already in the body? Can't the camera do what it normally does with its native lenses and have its behavior adjusted in software to compensate for the adapter? Losing a third of the light is quite a lot if you're doing anything but outside photography.
+ShiroiKage009 The body has no screw drive for these old lenses, so it can not operate them. The adapter is calibrated as a single unit, so it uses it's own sensor. You don't lose a third of the light, you lose a third of a stop. That is the difference between f2 and f2.2. Not noticeable for much photography at all.
Hello John i just purchased a A6000 and am considering getting one of these adapters to be able to use the a mount farther telephoto lenses for sports and wildlife. My question is is with this adapter on the A6000 will it still do focus tracking and does it hunt or search for the focus like it does with a metabones adapter?
Its a lot faster than the Metabones adaptor but if you attach it on your a6000 it won't be using the same autofocus system as it does on the camera. The adaptor uses a 15-point autofocus system so it won't be as good as the a6000's autofocus system. Its still capable of focus tracking and is reasonably fast.
Hi John, I have the converter and have the A7r. when I try using wider angled lens, zooms etc I have a circular vignette. I only have Sony lenses so thought there would not be an issue. What canbe done to combat this, if anything? Was hoping to keep my alpha lenses and use on the A7r. Your advise on this please
It sounds like you have DT lenses (they will say on the front of the lens itself). That means they are crop sensor lenses which are not specifically made for full frame cameras. While they can still be used with the camera, you can get rid of the vignette by going into the menu and going to the cog tab. Look for a setting called "APS-C Size Capture" and change it to "On". This will act like the lenses are on a crop sensor camera but you won't exactly get the full frame look on your camera.
I just bought a second hand adaptor. Can i use LA-EA4 on a a6000 with 20-200mm A mount lens. It works with Sony 16-50 APSC and Tamron 28-70 Ful frame OK. But can not use with 70-200. I wonder if the adaptor is broken or otherwise.
Ali pada john Hmm well after doing some quick research online, Tamron is aware of the issue but at the moment it doesn't look like there will be a firmware fix which is a bit unfortunate.
Can one expect reliable and quality results using Sony G super telephotos and this adapter in wildlife and sports/action photography? I have an a6000 and am concerned with the LA-EA4 being a significant step down in AF performance. I am currently shopping for a super telephoto prime from 300mm - 600mm, or an excellent zoom from 200-600. Should I expect to be able to use these types of lenses effectively with this adapter? Thanks for a great review!
It would do a pretty decent job with the adaptor but if you were using these sort of lenses, I would probably get an a77M2 just to see how fast and accurate these lenses really are.
No you can't. If you have Canon lenses, there is a brand called Metabones that will allow you to use it. You will have autofocus and aperture control but the autofocusing is pretty slow on it.
Hey John! Im planning on getting the LA-EA4 adapter to use my A mount lenses on my Sony a7 (previously owned the a33) . . . the problem is that they are all DT (APS-C Crop lenses) except my 75-300mm. Now my question is will the DT lenses work in crop mode on the a7 with the adapter ! And by how much is the difference in the crop (how much resolution will I be losing) ? Will it possible to post some sample images, Thanks budddy.
Yeah you can still use them even if they are DT lenses. If you're putting it on the A7 it will be 10 megapixels. Unfortunately I don't have the A7 on me so I won't be able to post up any photos.
Hey John Sison, I currently own a6000 and I also bought zeiss 16/35mm 2.8 amount lens. I didn't knew that I was gonna need any adapter. I'm just beginner. I need your advice, should I sell my lens and buy the zeiss 16/35mm 1.8 emount or should I buy LAEA4 adapter. Which set up would give a better results on my photography and videography ? Thank you in advance!!
Zeiss don't have a 16-35mm F1.8 in E-mount. There is a 16-35mm F2.8 G Master lens, however it is very expensive. I would go that way if it were possible (Depending on your budget). Otherwise, you can get the LA-EA4 adapter but you will be using the autofocusing system of the adapter and not the lens, plus if you used autofocus in your videos, the aperture will be locked at F3.5 which won't really give you much creative flexibility.
There's an autofocus unit and supports eye-af and real time tracking now. I'll see if I can do a video on it later. There are a few restrictions on them though and it depends on what camera body you're using. So many variables lol
Just making sure, is it this one SAL70300G or is it the none G series version? And what camera are you using it with? If its the G version, it shouldn't have a problem. If its not and you're using it on a full frame and turn off the APS-C/Super 35mm mode you will see vignetting.
Hi ! I have a tamron sp 150 600 di usd mount A but not with VC included as on the g2. Do you think I can adapt it on a sony a7 iii with the ea3? On a seller I asked the question and he told me that the ea4 was possible but not the ea3. I think my model has no optical stabilization on it ?!
You can adapt with the LA-EA3 and it should work with the focus motor that is in the lens but I don't think it will be as fast or efficient as the LA-EA4. At least your a7iii has stabilsation built in so at least it will compensate for a little bit of shake.
I want to buy an LA-EA4 adapter not for Sony a-mount lenses but for Sigma and Tamron a-mount lenses. However there are many compromises. The LA-EA4 is much more heavier and bigger than the simpler, smaller and cheaper LA-EA3. The LA-EA4 has auto focus motor inside for the much older autofocus a-mount lenses and translucent mirror for much faster autofocus. Also the Sony a-mount camera bodies have stabilized sensors. So the Sigma, Tamron a-mount lenses doesn't have internal stabilization. If a specific Sigma or Tamron lens has stabilization for canon and Nikon mounts, for Sony a-mount it doesn't have because it isn't needed for the Sony a-mount camera bodies it is intended. I have the first generation of Sony a7 without sensor stabilization and that is an issue for me. Also I am not sure if the LA-EA4 offers equally fast autofocus with Sigma, Tamron a-mount lenses as with native Sony a-mount lenses. For example EF autofocus adapters for e-mount cameras work adequately only with specific Canon, Sigma or Tamron EF or EF-S mount lenses. The LA-EA4 has the autofocus system with translucent lens like every a-mount lens. So it is highly probable that all a-mount lenses are full compatible with dissent autofocus speed. Sigma and Tamron are not very enthusiastic with a-mount lenses. They initially don't offer sony a-mount editions of their lenses. They offer a-mount later only with their most popular lenses. Nevertheless Tamron and Sigma lenses are much cheaper and sometimes better than the equivalent Sony a-mount lenses.
I'd still go for the LA-EA4. The autofocus on the lenses from Sigma and Tamron that I've used it with work just as fast as my old A-mount cameras. Haven't had any issue with it.
John Sison Thank you very much. You have a great TH-cam channel dedicated mostly to e-mount cameras and lenses. The Sony LA-EA4 is ignored and underestimated by most photographers. I am very happy that you informed me about the adapter's compatibility with Sigma lenses. Most of Canon lenses have an equivalent lens by Sigma and Tamron. In the past Sigma and Tamron lenses were a cheaper alternative solution to Canon lenses but lately Sigma with its Art series has even better lenses than Canon. Tamron is the best with its ultra zoom lenses too. I guess that since the LA-EA4 works perfectly with Sigma lenses, it will work with Tamron or Tokina a-mount lenses too. Sigma and Tamron usually initially prefer the Canon and Nikon mount for their lenses and much later the Sony a-mount. However the most popular lenses by both companies are available for a-mount. The Sony a-mount cameras have stabilization on their sensor. For that reason Sigma and Tamron lenses doesn't offer stabilization with ALL their a-mount lenses. Unfortunately both my current APS-C and full frame e-mount lenses doesn't have image stabilization on their sensors. I usually shoot with daylight and the lack of stabilization is not a big deal. I will wait a little until I found a good price for the LA-EA4 and then I will buy it. It is a good investment.
oscar paz All a-mount glass does because it's stabilized in the camera body. Sony has a partnership with Zeiss wish deliver high glass to the Sony lineup
oscar paz Oscar, i can't agree with you. Cameras with mirror - this is really old technology. Steadyshot is a good idea and gives sony alpha's users chance to buy lenses cheaper, then if lens was with stabilization. It's less effective system, then stabilization in lens. But you don't need stabilization if you can use fast shutter speed. And if it's dark aroun you, you can use high iso. Sony's lenses are good. High sharpness, perfect rendition, harmonious contrast.
I use it for my sony a6000 with sigma 18-35mm art lense. I shoot using 1/4000 f1.8 at 400iso and it works perfectly. Any change to the fstop (anytging other than f1.8) and the shutter speed gets stuck at a really slow speed -- making all my photos blurry if not on a tripod. Any solutions or tricks? have you heard of this issue before?
Hi John, another nice video review. Can you please post a picture or a video, when a CZ 24-70 attached to 7 or 7R? The weight balances well? I am currently shooting Canon, and have a spare CZ 24-70. Thinking to pair it up with a 7R.
hi John....just wondering can u make an review Sony A7rii with Carl Zeiss 85/1.4 A mount. also a different between using LAEA3 n 4 with that lens....thanks.
I unfortunately don't have that lens anymore :( But I would recommend using the LA-EA4 adapter with the 85mm F1.4 if you do intend to adapt because you won't get autofocusing with the LA-EA3.
Excelent channel! Great videos, very easy to understand and practical. Congrats! Sorry for my english, my question has to do with how does the adaptor affect the lens, due to the distance you add between the lens and the body when you install the adaptor on the camera. I want to buy the 7R III and I have lenses with A mounting. Will that issue affect the full frame photos? Thanks for your time.
Thanks for the kind words! It'll work fine. Its a full frame adapter. Although I would probably lean more towards getting the LA-EA3 adapter because with the LA-EA4, there is a translucent mirror in the way stealing a bit of light and you would be using the autofocus system of the LA-EA4, not the A7RIII.
o0o That's a good lens. To be honest, I'm not too sure since I haven't tried it with the adaptor and I don't have that lens but I would assume it would work perfectly fine.
I have Nex6, I know this was awhile back but please I have just bought Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for Sony Alpha, some reason I thought that include E-mount from Sony. Now I am not so sure. Please enlighten me!
You need to use the adaptor, either the LA-EA2 or the LA-EA4 as the Sigma 18-250 is a lens made for Sony A-mount and not the E-mount which is what the NEX6 uses.
Hi John ! great video and channel ! :) What about the focus fields? Does the adapter only get the focus fields in the middle of the screen ? or can also be taken a focus field a little bit in the corners ?
I'm switching from a99 to a7r2 and unfortunately it appears I need this adapter so that my screw-focusing lenses will work. Here's hoping Sony come out with a new adapter that will maintain the phase-detect focus of the new a7r2 (such as with the LA-EA3), but still have a motor for the screw drive lenses, such as my 135mm f/1.8, and the two Sigmas (fisheye and 500mm) that I'm hanging on to.
I think it should work fairly well with the Tamron but just remember its not going to use the autofocusing points of the adapter. I haven't heard of any reports with the lens not functioning well with the camera, especially if you're using the LA-EA4.
hey John, I'm looking at getting a sigma 50-500mm telephoto and I'm putting it on a sony atria, will this adapter work? and what are the downsides? Great review by the way!
+TheModernOdyssey Thank you! Which Sony camera are you putting it on? The downsides of using the adapter is that you do lose a bit of light coming into the camera and you're limited to using the autofocusing system of the adapter, not the camera.
You have to be really careful for this mirrors now. Many have fallen out or scratches /or dust. On SLR, that is not a problem. On NEX or A7 series is another story. AF focus is very bad on Sony 70-400/4.0-5.6G II. But must faster with the ATG Sony 500/2.8 (modified from 500/4.0G) and Sony 70-200/2.8G II. AF is slow & loud on 85/1.4 and 135/1.8. Are these your toys and just doing reviews? Thank you for sharing, John. FYI: A7 series still can not do live-view with Remote Camera Control. ATG recommends Sony about the live-view to pc, but no go on Sony. Delayed shutter when using flash. Delayed flash still. ATG AL-AF4 and Sony LA-EA4 are join ventured of ATG & Sony.
Its only compatible with Sony A-mount lenses. There is a metabones adaptor that you can use that would be able to adapt Canon lenses to Sony E-mount though.
I couldn't find one single review of the new mc 11 adapteur with the sigma 70-200 on A 7 or A6000(actually my camera), this review would be very interesting regarding the saving you can make
I'm not sure if you ever got your answer. I tried the MC-11 for Canon EF lenses on the sony A6000. It really doesn't focus that well since the 6000 uses Contrast Focus whereas the 6300/A7RM2 uses Phase Detection which makes the adapter perform pretty well. I would assume you'd have the same issue here just cause of the way their focus systems work.
Question: Will this Adapter work fine on the first NEX generation provided that you have installed the newest firmware on it? (Of course in crop mode) Reason why I ask: if somebody with a NEX-3/5 plans to go to FE sometime in the near to mid future, and doesn't want to buy LA-EA2 and later LA-EA4. Second question: still waiting on the SAL-135STF lens review ;))...
It will work perfectly fine with the first generation NEX-3 and NEX-5 cameras. There really isn't much point to buy an LA-EA2 anymore in my opinion. Haha it'll come =.)
blackuredtube It will work fine and you can use the full aperture range in stills but for video, if you're using continuous autofocus it will be locked to F3.5.
@@JohnSisonPhotography thanks so much for getting back. While in Alaska shooting the Aurora Borealis, the guide had turned off my auto focus so the lens could be more easily locked on infinity. Works perfectly now that it’s been turned back on.
@@JohnSisonPhotography No John, Sony has not updated. Very wrong in my eyes and I bet people have spent a lot of money buying 2 adapters.
Rob, thank you for the information! I was wondering about the difference. Now I know EA4 is the one to get.
No they have not conned anyone The LA EA 4 is designed for full frame and the 2 is for crop sensors
Sony have designed them specifically.Using the 4 on a crop sensors will result into much lens flare using the 2 on a full frame will cause vignetting - so there is your answer
Phiniox Glade is it fast the autofocus with the minolta lenses?
eliau piha since this post I've purchased a lot of A Mount glass for use on my a7 via the LA-EA4 adapter.
Also stops dust getting on the sensor which some people didn't think about
I just splurged on an A7R II and an LA-EA4, because of the large collection of Sony A-mount and Minolta glass I have amassed over the years.
All the minolta are supposed to be full frame right?
@@1RJ2 Only the 35mm film camera lenses. Minolta DT series, of which I have several, were APS-C only.
@@Dragonblaster1 never heard of them. Good to know
@@1RJ2 Yes but a-mount. Would it be simpler to make a a-moun full-frame mirrorless camera?
Unlike A99/A77 since A7/A7R do not have IBIS, how does this adapter works with larger lenses such as Sony SAL-70400G?
Thanks for this video! Super helpful. Do you think this will work with my A7iii?
hi.
I have a mount a system A850 and A77 and I want to know if a adapting the LA-EA4 adapter to a A7R will give me a fast autofocus too. Will I use the phase detection of the adapter or only the contrast AF? Will it help in wedding photography or fast moving subjects?
Hi, I have some Minolta maxxum lenses and I want o use them on a A6000, which adapter do you recommend?? The LAEA3 or LAEA4????
minie is NEX 7 Which adaptor should i use ,, please advise ,, thanks you
can i use that same adapter for the non full frame sony cams? i want to buy full frame lenses and use them on the a6000 too but still be able to use the same lenses on a full frame cam
MR SLOWMOTIVES Yeah definitely.
Peace, I'm thinking about getting a VG900, my only concern is the vignetting. Now that this camera is $2000.00 I made get it instead of a 5d mk3. Does the la-ea4 solves the vignetting? Thanks
It really depends on what lens you're using with it. Which lens are you going to get?
The Zeis Cine Primes. I already have the Samyung cine primes for my 6d. They're awesome too.
djkaneck1 I haven't seen any issues with those lenses but the LA-EA4 can't mount those lenses unless they are in Sony A-mount.
Works great on my a6000 but for some reason, the AF assist light doesn't work with the adapter on.
This is a silly question but I’m new to Sony and to video. If I wanted to film something with a different aperture like 7.1 for example, can you switch into manual mode and adjust what you want to adjust, then go back to continuous AF and it holds those settings? Or will it always be in 3.5?
That aperture locked at 3.5 is only on video mode right? How about photo mode? Will it locked at 3.5 as well?. Thanks.
The aperture is locked on at f3.5 when shooting video with autofocus. In manual focus or photo mode its whatever you want it to be :)
John Sison What if the lens is at f5.6 like at the tele end of some zooms , do you loose the AF ?
***** You don't lose the AF. It'll just go to F5.6 .
A question - if dust gets on the translucent mirror, does it show on pictures? The sensor has the ultrasonic vibration feature but how does this mirror limit us?
It won't show on the pictures. If dust gets on the mirror, just use a blower to gently get it off.
Cool!
Can you still use face recognition focus on the a7s?
Yeah you can.
That is pretty much the nature of the camera when you're shooting with autofocus. The only way to get rid of it is by shooting in manual focus.
Hi, the autofocus option doesn't allow you to change shutter speed on both A7s and A6000, which is a shame.
Kreative Barn btw, this is with minolta lenses. Maybe better with Sony A lenses?
You have fantastic lens carl 50mm f1.4 ...show any portrait and citylandscape, any park,food...for quality test...nice video1
Thanks!
Will eye focus and face detect work with the 2.8 70x200 lens on the A7R11. also does that mirror add to any resolution loss
+brokosok The eye AF won't work with the LA-EA4 and the A7RII. You do lose 1/3 of a stop of light.
Hi,
Will Steady-Shot be activated with the adapter? Since the A7 hasn't got SteadyShot are all the A-mount lenses on the A-7 without steadyshot? I have a Nikkor 70-200mm2.8 with VR. Is it possible to get an adaptoer to activate the VR on a A7?
Unfortunately there isn't. There are no A-mount lenses with steadyshot.
John Sison Hi John,
Thank you for your feedback. I just ordered a A7 and I'm very excited.
I do have a last question for you. What is the native ISO for the A7? TheCameraStoreTV on youtube says it's ISO200... is that true?
Jørgen Kirkegaard I'm pretty sure it's ISO100
Is there any Sharpness loss using Adapters like this? Adding distance between the lens and the censor?
+Keane DM You lose a tiny bit of sharpness because of the translucent mirror.
+John Sison
Have you tried the Metabones Speed Booster Ultra A to E mount adapter?
Can you compare it to this?
question,
If I have a A7ll,and the adapter mounted, along with the LA-Ea4 , what type of auto focus will I get .
Hallo,
I have a problem with my sony a6500 .
I have a laea 4 adapter and a tamron lens 70-200 2.8. Ld di sp.
Autofocus does not work and nobody knows how to fix it.
Please can you help me?
Best regards, Lynda
Does the lens retracts (turns to infinity position) when turning off the camera? (Sony a7 with LA-EA4 adapter )
It depends which lens you are using. Some retract when they are not being used.
That's great! Thanks a bunch. Cheers
Hey John I have question, so I have my A7 and I wondering if I use LAEA 4 + 18-55mm SAM II or 55-200mm A mount, do I get image crop or I get the full 24.7 MP image
Hi Lieu, it is compatible with those lenses but it will be cropped so you won't get the full 24MP resolution out of the camera.
So only FE will get full 24MP and the non FE will get like around 15 MP for Laea 4.The LAEA 2 only gave me 10 MP for a mount lens. Thanks
Has this line a future?
nope
also.....which is the best adapter for Leica lenses?
Hi, John, do you know that any adaptor is for A-mount camera using E-mount lens ?
There is non unfortunately.
I have 5 top end Sony (3 Carl Zeiss) lenses some have SSM and others Screw diven. If I buy a a7Rii should I ditch the A mount lenses and buy E mount lenses instead?
+Bernard Rice That's a tough one. I would still get A-mount lenses if you don't mind using an adapter with it.
The AF is a bit faster when its on the a7 but with the a7r its noticeable quicker.
John Sison thanks, appreciate!
Can you tell us what brands of lenses this works with. You mention Minolta. Any others? Thanks for the review.
Its only Sony A-mount and the autofocus Minolta lenses that will work with this.
Thanks!
Hmm it depends which grip you are using because Sony don't make an official grip for the a6500. It most likely will but I'm not 100% sure.
Thanks I wish they had a mount switch program
Thanks John, much appreciated
so what if i want to use canon lenses can i get teh canon adapter to e mount or does it not autofocus as well as the sony lenses?
It won't focus as well as the Sony lenses but if you got the Canon adaptor it will focus but it will take a while to lock on.
Ali pada john Which brand 70-200mm lens do you have? As far as I know it should work.
John Sison it is Tamron 70-200. I tried two adopters but results was the same.
Does the af work in video mode.
hi there, can we use this adapter for canon lenses or third party lenses that suite for canon camera like sigma, tamron, or tokina?thank you
No you can't.
Alright no worries buddy! Thanks!
Hi my friend!! Can you tell us something about the new LA-EA 5?
There's an autofocus unit and supports eye-af and real time tracking now. I'll see if I can do a video on it later. There are a few restrictions on them though and it depends on what camera body you're using. So many variables lol
@@JohnSisonPhotography Please do video if you can
How noisy (sound) is the auto focus with Minolta AF 50mm with LA-EA4 on the A7?
Scott XB Wang Its not extremely loud but its loud enough to heard when its autofocusing.
I bought a A6000 and I want to use a sigma 17-70mm lens (nikon mount). What kind of adapter should I get?
Thank you
You could use the Metabones Nikon mount to Sony E-mount adaptor but you do lose autofocus with it.
ok. Thanks for the help
Hey john will this adaptor work with a 70-300 F4/4-5.6? Would it show vignetting?
@@JohnSisonPhotography J'ai commandé la bague La EA 4 et l'adaptateur elle serai mieux. Je vous dirai ça en commentaire le rendu;)
What kind of focus area schemes is available with the LAEA4?
Wide, spot, flexi spot and local from memory.
Does LA-EA3 do any better then the LA-EA2 now?
And how reliable this camera is? Can I use SAL-500F40G with this camera and adapter?
Its very reliable. And you can use the SAL500F4G with that camera and adapter without any issues.
oscar paz All a-mount glass does because it's stabilized in the camera body.
Sony has a partnership with Zeiss wish deliver high glass to the Sony lineup

Oscar, i can't agree with you.
Hi john.. thank you for replying my fb pm.. i have few sigma a-mount lenses.. did la-ea4 perform well for 3rd party lenses?
Will it give the same autofocus speed if I connect this adapter to sony a6000? Cheers.
To be honest, I'm not too sure but I'll check for you when I get home and I'll let you know =.)
Thank you, John. If you can check it out for me that would be fantastic.
Clemente Meulio The a6000 is actually slightly faster.
Thanks, mate. Much appreciated.
hi john does the lens adaptr lose any stops of light ?
+Christopher Doherty Yes you lose one third of a stop of light.
In practical terms, how significant is that?
I use it for my sony a6000 with sigma 18-35mm art lense. I shoot using 1/4000 f1.8 at 400iso and it works perfectly. Any change to the fstop (anytging other than f1.8) and the shutter speed gets stuck at a really slow speed -- making all my photos blurry if not on a tripod. Any solutions or tricks? have you heard of this issue before?
I've never actually heard of that problem happening before. That's very strange. I'd say its defective but it doesn't seem normal.
Hi John, another nice video review. Can you please post a picture or a video, when a CZ 24-70 attached to 7 or 7R? The weight balances well? I am currently shooting Canon, and have a spare CZ 24-70. Thinking to pair it up with a 7R.
Are you talking about the CZ 24-70 f2.8 for A-mount? Or the CZ 24-70 f4 for E-mount? I can post it up on my facebook page if you'd like.
John Sison f2.8 A-mount please
Hej, does it work with canon 70-200 mm too on a7r ii? If yes, how about auto fokus?
LA adapter are for sony A mount lensess. U need MC11
hi John....just wondering can u make an review Sony A7rii with Carl Zeiss 85/1.4 A mount. also a different between using LAEA3 n 4 with that lens....thanks.
I unfortunately don't have that lens anymore :( But I would recommend using the LA-EA4 adapter with the 85mm F1.4 if you do intend to adapt because you won't get autofocusing with the LA-EA3.
oo...ok thanks. :)
Wow fast autofocus!
# Now I really affraid that Sony will remove the A-mount line up, soon.. well, I hope not..
A mount still around. I use 70-200G with my A7III
Hi, is the adapter good for ef canon lenses?
Any idea how well this works with the 70-210 f4 "beercan"? Thanks :)
o0o That's a good lens.
Thanks!
Can you still use burst shooting ?
Yeah definitely.
Hi John ! great video and channel ! :)
What about the focus fields? Does the adapter only get the focus fields in the middle of the screen ? or can also be taken a focus field a little bit in the corners ?
+casual Hamburg Are you talking about the focus points? They are in the middle of the frame.
What about with screw focus lenses? How about 3rd party lenses?
Jonathan Stewart This can only be used with Sony A-mount lenses and 3rd party lenses like Tamron, Sigma, Tokina as long as they're in A-mount.
Thanks - and did you get a chance to test performance? Just wondering if the screw-based focusing suffers with the adapter compared to native focus.
Jonathan Stewart What camera are you using? Some cameras will focus faster on the adapter and some will focus faster on the camera.
John Sison I'm just curious how much slower, if at all, the A-mount screw lenses will focus with the adapter compared to say, on the a99.
How well do you think this will work with Tamron 150-600?
I think it should work fairly well with the Tamron but just remember its not going to use the autofocusing points of the adapter. I haven't heard of any reports with the lens not functioning well with the camera, especially if you're using the LA-EA4.
is there a quality adopter to use Sony "E" mount lenses on a sony "A"mount camera ????
At the moment, there are any that I would recommend. It would be pretty difficult to do as well.
hey John, I'm looking at getting a sigma 50-500mm telephoto and I'm putting it on a sony atria, will this adapter work? and what are the downsides?
Great review by the way!
+TheModernOdyssey Thank you! Which Sony camera are you putting it on? The downsides of using the adapter is that you do lose a bit of light coming into the camera and you're limited to using the autofocusing system of the adapter, not the camera.
I will be using a sony a7Rii
will it be ok with it?
Yeah that should be okay with the camera.
FYI:
A7 series still can not do live-view with Remote Camera Control.
ATG recommends Sony about the live-view to pc, but no go on Sony.
Delayed shutter when using flash.
Delayed flash still.
ATG AL-AF4 and Sony LA-EA4 are join ventured of ATG & Sony.
Does the LA-EA4 allow for the eye-focus feature?
yes
Is the mount compatible to use with Cannon DSLR's?
Its only compatible with Sony A-mount lenses. There is a metabones adaptor that you can use that would be able to adapt Canon lenses to Sony E-mount though.
can u make one video on sony a 99ii and its adapter
a99ii doesn't really have any adapters actually.
Nice video! I have the Sony a7ii, would the Sony LA EA4 adapter work and give me full autofocus with the Sigma 50-500 would you know? Cheers!
+Origin Unknown It should given the Sigma lens is in Sony A-mount.
Question: Will this Adapter work fine on the first NEX generation provided that you have installed the newest firmware on it? (Of course in crop mode)
Reason why I ask: if somebody with a NEX-3/5 plans to go to FE sometime in the near to mid future, and doesn't want to buy LA-EA2 and later LA-EA4.
Second question: still waiting on the SAL-135STF lens review ;))...
It will work perfectly fine with the first generation NEX-3 and NEX-5 cameras. There really isn't much point to buy an LA-EA2 anymore in my opinion.
Haha it'll come =.)
I can put the Sony A3000 and then get put lenses A-mount?
Yep :)
Can i attach sigma 50mm f1.4 on sony a7 mark ii? Will the AF work well?
Yes you can and it will autofocus.
Thanks for your reply. What about the aperture setting and everything?
blackuredtube It will work fine and you can use the full aperture range in stills but for video, if you're using continuous autofocus it will be locked to F3.5.
As always a descriptive video! thanks
How much light does the mirror swallow?
a third of a stop of light.
Is this mount compatible for Nex 6 ?
Yes it is :)
Is this gonna work with Sigma with A mount lenses?
Yep.
The auto focus of my 70-200 2.8 G doesn’t work on my 6000 with the laea 4
That's strange. By the looks of things, it should work. I will probably add that you may need to update your firmware?
@@JohnSisonPhotography thanks so much for getting back. While in Alaska shooting the Aurora Borealis, the guide had turned off my auto focus so the lens could be more easily locked on infinity. Works perfectly now that it’s been turned back on.
