The US Open is the final Grand Slam of the year and takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The 2022 US Open saw Spain's Carlos Alcaraz and Poland's Iga Swiatek claim the men's and women's singles titles. It was both players' first US Open title, with Alcaraz claiming his first Grand Slam title and Swiatek claiming her third Grand Slam title. The 2023 US Open main draw is scheduled to go ahead between August 28 - September 10. Nishikori taking down Djokovic in 2014 was a far bigger shock than Cilic beating Roger. In fact Nishikori Djokovic was probably the biggest grand slam upset on the mens side that year in 2014. Or 2nd biggest, Gulbis-Federer at FO 2014 was a big shock too.

Two facts that stand without question:
1. Cilic beating Federer was definitely a very notable upset. A repost should include that upset too.
2. Nishikori taking down Djokovic was a far bigger shock than Cilic d. Federer.
I was so confident that Djokovic would win that match. From what I recall from BetOnline, he was a -1800 favorite to beat Nishikori. I can't recall someone that heavily favored that late in a major tournament losing. It's usually easy work, like Djokovic vs. Gasquet at the SF at Wimbledon a few years ago.
Federer nearly lost to Monfils in the QF. I wasn’t shocked at all he lost to Cilic in the SF. Djokovic losing to Nishikori on the other hand, that shocked me.

In 2015 he had already beaten Nadal twice
But that was the first time Nadal ever lost from two sets up

How is cilic over Federer in here but not nishikori over Djokovic from literally the same year
i dont consider Del Potro - Federer an upset. they both reached the final for a reason.
Federer was a 5 time defending champion, Del Potro never made a slam final until then.
@@omeramitai2593 so whats your point? an upset to me is a favorite for winning the title gets kicked out early in the tournament by a nobody. none of that was the case here. Del Potro was a top 10 player at the time and crushed Nadal in the Semis.

@@Gilgarth That’s an upset. Del Potro is a 20 year old first time slam finalist against the current world number 1 and during that time, was the greatest men’s player ever. That was an upset but when it got to the 5th, I wasn’t surprised Del po pulled it off because Fed chokes tight 5th setters all the time.
Dude this was a young and upcoming Delpo beating Federer after 5 back to back USO wins. A veritable upset if I ever saw one.
I'm more impressed with those who beat the top players at their peak versus on the decline.
exactly - that's why the vinci serena one is by far the biggest upset for me. serena was so close to calendar slam and had beaten vinci 4 times before that in straight sets

Missed Samantha Stosur vs Serena Williams 2011 women's final. Stosur was playing in just her second grand slam final.
Edberg’s loss in 1993 against Karel Novacek should have also been included, if there is any footage of it. Edberg was then the two-time defending champion.

Emma Ranked 150 v Bencic ranked 11 ??
Technically speaking several of the matches Emma played that led to her 2021 title is considered upsets because she was a qualifier meeting several seeded players ...
None of those players Emma beat that year had ever won a Grand Slam , reached a final or considered a favourite for the title. So those girls were expected to lose that year.

nishikori against murray 2016? after french open murray had lost only two matches until the end of the year, one in cincinatti against cilic (right after olympic gold medal) and the other in NY against nishikori

Nishikori was a top10 player it's not that big an upset
What about Pouille vs Nadal in 2014? That was the biggest upset since Federer losing at Wimbledon

I don't understand how anyone beating Tsitsipas, even a player outside of top 50-100, is an "upset" because Tsitsipas' best result at the US Open is the third round (2020 and 2021).

We were robbed of 2 calendar Grand Slams. One with Serena (lost to Vinci 🙄) 2015 and Novak stopped by Meddy 🐙 2021
It would have been Epic to see even 1 in modern times.

Anyone who was watching tennis knows that Nadal's loss in 2022 wasn't a big upset at all. He was shaky his entire season after Wimbledon, he only entered the US Open because he did so well in the 3 other slams, but no one was expecting him to go far.

Cilic' win over Federer isn't really a big upset. He was a top player for a long time and didn't lose a set in QF, semis nor the final.
That and also Federer almost lost to Monfils in the QF, so I wasn’t surprised at all that Cilic beat him

Im sorry Svetlana Kuznetsova losing is not an upset. I don't care if she was defending champion. This lady lost at every single slam she played, which was a lot, besides two rare times. Beating her is not an acheivement.
Are you serious dude? Kuznetsova has had an excellent career! How many other players have reached 4 grand slam finals, winning TWO, and reaching world no 2 during SEVERAL seasons??!!
Kuznetsova was the defending champion in 2005 so it’s definitely an upset.
Am sorry but how losing in the final 5 sets by a top 6 player in the world is upset and the cilic match not really upset but I understand maybe the 3/0 make it looks bad but if that’s included way not djokovic and neshikori too it was the same year and clilc beat nishkori in the final like nothing so he’s more hard to beat then nishi

Francis beating Rafa last year wasn't an upset at all,I saw it coming before the match even started but I still thought it's Rafa maybe it doesn't actually happen this time.But in hindsight of course it did and it made absolute sense
