  • Laura's son, Sonny, was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma when he was 5 years old. In this film she talks about how the family coped with his diagnosis and treatment, and she explains how she coped with having a child with cancer.

Thank you for this video. My little grandson has just been diagnosed of Hopkins lymphoma. There is a lot going in my mind to process and find solutions. A lot of questions as well. Especially, confused about what chemotherapy is.

We don't have this information to hand, and having listened again to the video it doesn't mention this. Lymphoma is a very individual condition, and people may have different experiences. You may find our information on lymphoma in children helpful, as this outlines treatment in general: lymphoma-action.org.uk/types-lymphoma-lymphoma-children-and-young-people/lymphoma-children

I’m confused. I’m an infectious disease specialist and trained in oncology case review. Lymphoma is a blood type cancer and a very common one. Ive never heard of a single case afflicting the bowel system or those internal organ tissues. You also wouldn’t get a cancer diagnoses so quickly without a lymph node biopsy which you didn’t mention. Lymphoma is first found in lymph nodes that are enlarged and cause variety of symptoms from Grade A to Grade B. An ultrasound will generally be efficient enough to determine if the lesion is cancerous by properties and a biopsy will confirm if needed. I think this story needs an accuracy check because with respect, this isn’t lymphoma. It could be a leukemia which is another type of blood cancer but that’s entirely different.

In this video, Laura talks about her experience of her son’s diagnosis and treatment for Burkitt lymphoma. She does not go into detail about all the tests and scans he had during his diagnosis. Laura’s son was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma and was treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital (a specialist children’s hospital in the UK). Abdominal symptoms are very common in children who have this type of lymphoma. Although some types of lymphoma predominantly affect the lymph nodes, it can affect other parts of the body, too. We have more information about lymphoma in children and about Burkitt lymphoma on our website, www.lymphoma-action.org.uk
