Had the pleasure of being invited to this fine evening ,made it an hour late for Rebekah's set😔 to be honest the fine lady played her heart out! Outstanding set! But the small collective crowd were 'party people' lol living the party life that gets them invited to these types of intimate gigs, soul less people that when your chatting to them outside having a smoke tell you 'I'm not really into 'dance' music I only came because my brothers cousins sister in law was a club promoter for the arches a decade ago😔 mr McMillan takes over from Rebekah around 50+ minutes and is raw & straight to the point☺️ times have changed yes & the old pressure is gone! times when it felt like an institution ..almost as if it was secret enough that only sound like minded individuals went because it was about the event the music & exposure to the raw inhibition stripping non pretentious enjoyment.sadly times have changed, yes the new venue swg3 & other various events & locations will pull these 'clubbers' in & sell tickets etc....its getting a bit fucking hipster shitty yey who's on the decks my dad will pick us up after the disco.it feels like a product now😔 fucking Simon cowell hiding behind a record label somewhere because the next wave of 'clubbers' etc will get some cunt that knows heehaw about techno (dance music lol) to toe the line & produce pish to the masses (trance) lol.
Give the shit a Miss for a couple of weekends save a few quid & get your feet to Berlin, aye they've got pretentious shit there also.....but away from that they know how to party🙌🏻.....reminds me of why I followed stu & orde in the first place all those years ago.....keep it dark & sweaty......one water please 😏

Top set. As a vinyl DJ (who plays hip-hop, soul, disco etc and scratches a bit, used to play house/techno) can someone tell me why they (or if they) need all that gear which costs a bomb. I mean its really only a fairly straightforward beatmix they are doing by the sound of it. Oh they are adding some FX now and then but I can with my Stanton M207 scratch mixer. Cutting with the echo sounds cool. there's a lot that can go wrong...too many buttons.

Andy Hinton Slam do actually often do a lot of jamming whilst Djing but I kind of get what your saying. They have their standard set up to allow all sorts of mixing, digital files, cds etc. I've known them to sample a beat and sequence a load of stuff over the top live.

Anton Haq I wasn't dissing them btw. I was trying to work out if it was Slam as in Orde and Stuart as spent some great nights in the Sub and Arches many many moons ago with my friend Karen who still lives off Byers Rd. I actually sent the link to her other half who knows them and he confirmed it was indeed them. Positive Ed is still one of the best dance tunes ever. Shit down here (Brighton) proper techno like that is dead as a Dodo which is a shame when we used to have The Zap on our doorstep. Tbh my view of the tech now is that it can go two ways. You seem to get too many kids where the perfect seamless mix becomes more important than the music so lots of tracks with identical BPMs and no creativity and highs and lows etc. With vinyl you sometimes got a few seconds of clashing beats from even top DJs and no one cared. Can you imagine some kid now going from say a 105 Balearic tune to a 130 techno track using the old turn the 1210 motor off technique? That's what made it all so exciting back in the day. But if that's their standard set up fare enough. Most of what I play now you have to get on vinyl anyway and it's what I know (and not much that can go wrong)

Andy Hinton I didn't think you were dissing them mate. I agree with a lot of what you said about DJing. Personally nothing does it for me like a pair of technics and a box of vinyl but these days so many releases are digital files only. I like the physical aspect of DJing, I can even get into it with cd decks but mixing digital files feels like cheating to me. I've always tried to mix it up and make a set like a journey, starting with deep house and ending with techno.
Slam have been consistently excellent through their whole career, 5 studio albums and you can see how their sound has changed. For me, they defined tech-house then moved into vocal stuff and are now in full on techno mode. I rate their last album Reverse Proceed as the album of the decade so far, I reviewed it on Amazon if you're interested. Their Soma label has also been consistently excellent. I can honestly say I love 90% of the releases from about the last 7 years and there are plenty of classics from before then. It's the only label where I buy every release as I know I'll like it. I'm looking forward to the next Soma Compilation out at the end of the month which I think is focussing on Scottish talent. Check out the Soma website, you can preview most releases.

Anton Haq I couldn't diss the guys who made one of the best tech/progressive house tracks ever haha. Justin Robertson did a great set down here last year. Tbh I didn't know any of the tracks except one he played in the middle and it got the biggest reaction from the crowd oldies and the kids, Positive Ed of course. Yeah like I said I had great nights in the Sub and The Arches. Do you know Iain Baird and Karen? I think Iain knew the Sub guys and Karen Orde and Stuart but may have been the other way round. Great times. There was Soma and 23rd Precinct there (I'll Trance You with the best and cleverest piano breaks ever). Played that to a guy in his 20s round here a while back and he was gobsmacked haha. Then we had Guerilla (the constant quality of their stuff was amazing) and the Boys Own offshoot labels. Great times. It's dead down here pretty much and in London now. There's the odd thing with the old guard like Justin, Weatherall. You can tell the difference if you're lucky enough to catch their sets as they know what it's all about. Seamless mixing (which is of course a fuck if a lot easier now) seems to have become the be all and end all among the young DJs but they don't know how incredible clubs used to be so you can't blame them really. I was always a soulboy and hip-hop head in London before Acid House came along so have gone back to that. Disco etc and more varied sets are starting to get played a lot which in my view is a great thing and the kids have never heard some of the amazing stuff from the 70's and early 80's and love it which is nice to see. Also learning to cut and scratch from QBerts online course. Something I've always wanted to do, It's bloody hard I can tell you but regular practice and it begins to click. I love it, it's great fun and looks fucking cool too...yet to do it in public apart from using techniques to scratch hip hop and funk tracks into a mix but the day will come! Anyway was chatting to Karen and may come up this summer. Have the Arches closed for good? Read something about that. The only incredible beyond belief set using (3) Technics where the mixing was the main thing that I remember was one Monday night at The Zap...some geezer called Tony Humphries haha. It was all garage but I don't think he played a single track all the way through. He had a dub side going on one deck, an acapella on one the some other beats on another. That took some serious skills. Then he was seen as the best DJ in the world at the time.

Andy Hinton I think we must be of a similar age, I get all misty eyed about the old days too. Guerilla was a cool label, I loved Spooky and still play Gargantuan regularly. I'm out of touch with Justin Robertson, one of Manchester's (my home) finest but I've seen him DJ countless times. Even in Manchester it 's not the same, gone are the glory days of Sankey's Soap and Bugged Out and there were some other brilliant club nights, Rob Fletcher's Herbal Tea Party was amazing and many great nights at Invurt. I'd love to know what Weatherall's up to know, as far as I'm concerned he was the greatest DJ in existence. Ah, Acid House, thank fuck I was 19 in '88. It's interesting that you've gone back to listening to stuff you liked pre Acid House, I'm finding myself doing the same although I do still like to keep an ear out for decent house and techno, the majority of it tends to be from Soma! There were so many cool labels back in the day where you knew it was highly likely that whatever they released would be good.
