Hurstwic: Building a Viking-age Turf House

  • Hurstwic recently traveled to Iceland to shoot our next film, “The Final Battle of Grettir the Strong”. The saga hero Grettir, and his brother Illugi, lived on the remote island of Drangey about 1000 years ago. There, they were attacked and killed by an overwhelming force led by Þorbjörn öngull. Our film, due to be released in spring 2017, brings that battle to life on the screen, shot on the location of the historical battle.
    In order to make our film, we needed to construct a replica of the Viking-age turf house that Grettir and Illugi lived in on Drangey. This short video shows how we made the house.
    We thank the organizations who provided help and support for this project

    really neat build, but the archaeologist in me is hoping that wasnt the actual site of a 1000 year old Scandinavian structure

    Very nice work! This style is very similar to the hunting shelters I build in New England. Very warm, and haven't felt a drop of water seep through. It's a lot of work for one man, but it is well worth the effort.

      Did you not use much wood at all in the roof like here? I see many people will cover the whole roof in wood and sometimes plastics

    I always see people mocking the Vikings and the Nords for "living in dirt huts" but the architecture and design of these are amazing. Perfect use of space, great insulation and water proofing, good heat retention, what's wrong with this? It's a lot better than the straw huts they still use in Africa to this day.

      I want to believe you simply wanted to discuss the benefits of a "viking home" in the era in which it was most used, but it's hard to do that when you pointlessly insult several other cultures as if it were a competition (with a lack of understanding of the latter's architecture, no less).
      Obviously, every culture that survived the environment they lived in built homes good enough for that environment with the resources they had on hand, there is no need to insult one to compliment another. Unless you were insecure, that is.

    • @gjigaqaquj
      @gjigaqaquj 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Pretty sure the Norse didn't exclusively use these homes, except way before the Viking age. They knew how to build wooden homes. Africans also knew how to build wooden homes. Most mud huts were used by people who can't afford it or live with a tribe.
      Not that Africa has anything to do with it.

      Remember that long time before that, africans built pyramids. Africa is a continent with many cultures and peoples, some more developed and wealthy, others very poor.

      Rather than building up and getting little insulation and stability, burrow down and cover up. Smart.

    Once the grass grows longer, would that help prevent the rain from leaking through?

    • @thorleifr
      @thorleifr  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The roots of the grasses in the turf grow together to create a solid, living structure that helps to channel rain runoff where it is desired. There's a lot more detail in the Hurstwic article on turf houses. What we built on Drangey for our film took some shortcuts that one wouldn't take if one were building a permanent structure. Perhaps some of these are the same shortcuts Grettir and Illugi used. Again, more information in the article, where we discuss permanent and temporary structures.

      Hunter Fancher I have a friend in the SCA that teaches grimla. he says him and his students use store boughts and grind the blade down to about 3mm to 5mm in thickness for axes. swords and spearheads should be bought as is. look up training blunts, or live steel blunts. the seaxs and other knives used are smithed by the the students but a quick search on amazon will often bring up cheapo imitations. grind the edge down to 3mm to 5mm. make sure points and edges are rounded very well or your training partners will be pissed, hurt or both. as for real deal it's best to look for personal. to person sites like eBay or Etsy. be careful though, the hand made stuff will satisfy many a period Nazi but make sure you are ordering from a reputable dealer or you could be out a shit ton of money. you could also try making them yourself. it's not easy, but it's not as hard as one would think. hell I set up a forge and made Dane axes for all my platoon mates in my last deployment. if my dumbass can spit anyone can.

    How well does the wood hold up under the turf?

    • @thorleifr
      @thorleifr  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simple answer: we don't know. The expectation is that a house built to be a permanent dwelling would take extra precautions to protect the wood from rot or decay. Precautions like: setting the wood posts on stones to keep them away from the earth; putting twigs between the turf roof and the rafters to create an air space; air spaces in the walls to prevent rot; and others. If all these steps were taken, it seems the wood would last for many, many generations. Evidence suggests these kinds of steps were taken for permanent houses, but we have no idea if a primitive or temporary house (such as Grettir's house) would have taken these extra steps. In that case, rot and decay are more likely, with a shorter lifespan. There's more information in the Hurstwic website article about turf houses:

    I love how people use to live back in the day whether it be the vikings or neanderthals, ice man what ever. A question about this type of house, what if it rained allot? wouldn't the rain soak through??

    • @SkyripperThaBird
      @SkyripperThaBird 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, turf is pretty ingenious since it practically isolates the house, and you usually stack at least two layers of turf on each other, overlapping any gaps that may occur - or fill any gaps in with smaller pieces of turf. Rain isn't an issue, since the thick and dense material that is turf is hard for water to penetrate properly. Sometimes, the turf might actually nurture itself and "grow", filling in any small gaps when it rains.
      I'm part of a viking reenactment group, and we've a house with turf roofing. I've tried standing inside it during rain to see if the turf really holds up as well as thought, and it does! We store benches and other items usually kept outside in the summer in there.
