A note for those people who do not enjoy Elena’s performance in “Rasputin” (the ballet/dance drama the footage for this video is from): Whether or not you agree with Sergei’s vision, his interest was in creating an emotionally appealing drama that people who do not necessarily already follow ballet will enjoy. And I am one of the many people who found that this dance drama (Rasputin) hit the mark.
“Rasputin” is one of the few ballets I have seen in its entirety, and I was deeply moved by Elena’s performance in the London 2019 recording of the full ballet this dance is taken from. I and many others found great value in what she had to bring to the stage and the role. If you have seen the full production and are still annoyed, confused, frustrated, disappointed, or angry about Sergei’s choice in casting her, I’m sorry you were not able to be as moved as I and many others were by her performance. I hope you might be willing to consider that this experimental approach to Rasputin had more value to it than you were able to experience.
Rasputin has had rotating cast and different dancers have filled this role. So, those who want to see a "real ballerina" as Alexandra have had, and may occasionally still have, opportunities to do so.
Speaking only for myself, I understand that I do not see or appreciate ballet the way true ballet fans do, but I was deeply affected by Elena’s less technically skilled, but deeply emotional performance. It’s unfortunate that not everyone is able to see or feel or enjoy the unique energy Sergei saw in Elena when he cast her. But I, for one, am glad he chose to bring her into the role.🌹

I made this music video. Thank you so much for the compliments! The idea for it came to me after I read an interview with Sergei where he mentioned having the Max Fadeev song "Dancing on the Glass" on his iTunes playlist. I was curious to hear what kind of music Sergei liked, and ended up completely grabbed by the music and Maxim's voice in this song. After I looked up the lyrics - and a few English translations, since I don't speak Russian (yet!) - the rest of the idea for the video came together very quickly.

In clips like these, if you can focus on Sergei’s arms (it is nearly impossible not to watch the crisp energy, precision and strength of his legwork) he controls the port de bras as if his arms are water, the fluidity and grace from shoulder to finger tips is gorgeous.

Yes, he has such beautiful arm and shoulder movements. That fluidity and grace is one of the many things that set him apart from other dancers when I first saw him. And still one of my favorite things about his dancing. He could do an entire dance with just his upper body and it would be captivating. 🥰✨

Да, он несравненно красивый танцор. И очень жаль, что больше людей не получат удовольствия от его танца из-за разногласий в политике. Но то, что делает танец Сергея уникальным, связано с самим Сергеем - его личностью, характером и всем, что у него внутри, - неотделимой частью которого являются те татуировки и политика, которые вам так не нравятся, потому что они - выражение его самого и того, что важно для него.
Вы не можете отделить его душу от его тела и его танца. Если вы хотите одного, вы должны быть готовы принять и другого. Его зрительская аудитория не имеет права диктовать ему, что ему можно или нельзя делать со своим телом или своей жизнью. Что касается удаления татуировок - Сергей прошел как минимум 15 сеансов лазерного удаления в течение почти двух лет, пытаясь «начать заново» и удалить все свои татуировки, отчасти для того, чтобы люди перестали судить его по ним и ограничивать проекты, которые они хотел, чтобы он появился из-за них. У него были планы вернуться в Голливуд и больше заниматься творчеством в США. Но после февраля 2022 года он был вынужден выбрать, хочет ли он сохранить эти планы за счет осуждения России и Путина, и, как мы все знаем, он решил сделать больше татуировок Путина. Yes, he is an incomparably beautiful dancer. And it’s a terrible shame more people won’t enjoy his dance because of differences in politics. But the thing that makes Sergei’s dance unique is bound up in Sergei himself - his personality and character and everything inside of him, which those tattoos and politics you dislike so much are an inseparable part of because they are expressions of himself and what is important to him.
You can’t dissect his soul from his body and his dance. If you want the one you have to be willing to accept the other. His audience is not entitled to dictate what he may or may not do with his body or his life. If people find it impossible to enjoy watching him because his appearance and opinions are unattractive or offensive to them, then so be it. He knows being apolitical and removing his tattoos would help him be more “acceptable” to a wider number of people. But he’s not chosen that route and, at this point, you seem unaware of the fact that he, like many other Russian artists, would not be ALLOWED to be apolitical and to dance “without borders”.
Especially because of his past statements of public support of Putin, but also simply because he’s Russian, like many Russian artists in European countries and the USA , last year Sergei was forced by the agents and directors he was planning on working with to make a choice - if he was to keep dancing or pursuing creative projects with them he was told he would need to make a statement denouncing Russia and Putin and the Russian government. Turning apolitical wasn’t even an option.
And regarding tattoo removal - Sergei underwent at least 15 laser removal sessions over the course of nearly two years in an effort to “start fresh” and remove all his tattoos, in part so that people would stop judging him by them and limiting the projects they wanted him to appear in because of them. He had plans to return to Hollywood and do more creative work in the USA. But after February 2022, he was forced to choose whether or not he wanted to keep those plans at the cost of denouncing Russia and Putin, and as we all know, he chose to get more Putin tattoos. And a few months later, he re-covered his fading Russian coat of arms on his right hand with a revised design of the coat of arms that has a heart in the center. And so, while he hasn’t commented on it, it seems unlikely he’ll continue any further laser removal sessions. He may even continue getting more tattoos. So, it doesn’t really matter if other people don’t like his tattoos. It’s his body to do with as he pleases. If people don’t want to see them, they can choose to just not watch him dance.
(A further note about tattoo removal: Laser removal is not as easy as most people seem to think it is. The laser removal sessions are very painful and cause the skin to blister and it has to heal over a period of weeks or months before another session can be repeated. Even the lightest and smallest of tattoos can take 4-6 sessions or more to remove. While the results of Sergei’s sessions are visible in the overall fading of his ink and even resulted in a few near-removals, such as the Joker on his shoulder and the “Mickey Rourke” tattoo on his arm and the “Natasha/Dasha” and other letters and names on his hands, the heavy inks used in most of his tattoos would have taken several more years of continued sessions to fade - and possibly would never have completely disappeared.)
So, all that to say - This is who Sergei is. Instead of expecting him to dramatically change his body and life to fit others’ expectations -it’s better that if people don’t like the way he looks or the way he lives and expresses himself in the world, that they just go watch other dancers who don’t have tattoos and don’t express their political opinions.
I wish the whole world would watch and enjoy his dance, but if they don’t want to, it’s their loss.

Yaroslav's version is also nice, yes. I am a big fan of his music and I plan to do a montage with one of his songs at some point (hopefully soon). But I chose to use the original artist of the song, Max Fedeev, because this is the version of the song Sergei Polunin said he liked. And I also like this version myself.

O el peligro de los medios de comunicación tal vez?Semanas atrás mientras hacía una visita a París fui al museo Pompidou y estando allí conocidos míos me telefonearon preocupados desde España pues había salido en todas las noticias que el museo del Louvre acababa de ser desalojado por una amenaza de un ciudadano islamista ,y como consecuencia de ese hecho se estaba desplegando 7000 agentes de seguridad por la ciudad .Al salir del museo me sorprendió ver que Paris seguía igual que siempre ,alegre y muy lejos de la idea caótica vendida por la televisión .Realidad o manipulación?Desde dónde y hasta dónde el odio ,la rivalidad ,el miedo ,el fanatismo,se generan intencionadamente?
Entiendo lo que quieres decir con los medios de comunicación, pero ese no parece ser el caso en la situación en Italia que llevó a la cancelación del programa de Sergei. Fue una situación que se estuvo gestando por un tiempo y las amenazas parecieron lo suficientemente creíbles a los directores del teatro que cancelaron un espectáculo que ya había sido reprogramado dos veces y tuvieron que reembolsar a todos los poseedores de entradas.
I understand what you mean about the media, but that does not seem to be the case in the situation in Italy that led to Sergei's show being cancelled. It was situation that brewed for awhile and the threats seemed credible enough to the theater managers that they canceled a show that had already been rescheduled twice and they had to refund all the ticket holders.
