I've always identified as a Ford guy myself but honestly... I just love old steel especially old loud Manual and the sound of mechanical gas and diesels with no stupid computers
Don't be so figurative. There's nothing wrong with being literal. If people were never literal then this world would be so much more confusing and confused than it already is. Don't expect people to not be literal sometimes.
I am glad i found this video. I just bought a 6.2 out of a M1009 and all my buddies are ragging on me for it saying that the engine will be un bearably slow, and too loud to. Hear yourself think in. Your suburban looks and sounds no slower than my land cruiser with the stock straight 6. And with carpet and a headliner will be quieter than this video. I think i am gonna be happy.
Naturally aspirated the 6.2 is pretty damn slow, I have since regeared this truck to 4.56, and that made a pretty good difference in acceleration. If you actually put mufflers on the exhaust it's pretty quiet. When I still had the stock exhaust on her the roar of the tires was louder than the engine on the highway.
That sounds amazing like the interior of a HMMWV. Buddy of mine has a diesel 90s Suburban and it's always funny to hear that sound from a Chevy...almost jealous of it.
I feel your pain on having a slug. I have an 85 k10 Silverado with the wimpy 305 and the wimpier 3.08 axle ratios. Floor it and it just makes more noise and sucks gas.
This is awesome. I just picked up a 85 suburban with nv4500, has a small block though. It was sitting for a while and cylinder 3 gave up driving home. So its getting a L31 (96-98 5.7 vortec) for the roller cam, better heads etc but keeping it a 4 barrel. Ill have a video up soon, it was originally a 6.2 K20 with auto. The nv4500 is a game changer, you keep the low from 4 speed and get an awesome overdrive. I was going to LS swap it but the low end torque on the small block is just a little better plus i had a nv4500 6.0 2003 gmc and that trans really doesnt like shifting above 4500rpm...right where the vortec stops making power anyways!
Thanks man! I love it. Check out the new video I just posted with an update of what all I've done to her over the past year, and some video of her in the mud.
I've got a 85 Scottsdale flatbed k10 with the 6.2l has dual thrush tubes exit on both sides sounds amazing.... Not so sure all my neighbours think the same while it warms up at 6am, but I love it... Sounds like an old Massey tractor!
May I ask exactly WHERE did you find all the parts you needed to mount the NV4500 to your 6.2L diesel??? WHAT make, model and year bellhousing did you use? Got links??? what make, model, size and year are your clutch master and slave cylinder from? Got links??? Where did you get your clutch pedal setup and from what year was it? Also what SIZE clutch and flywheel are you using and where did you get it from? p.s I have a 1987 6.2L diesel too but with a blown automatic TH400 and i'm looking to do what you did!
Hey Flatlander, what problems did you have with the Advance Adapters bell housing with the 6.2? Starter clearance? Love your suburban. I’ve got an ‘89. Planning on converting to the NV4500.
That's what I plan to do on my 89 diesel. What exact kit/parts did you use to do the conversion? I plan on running 3.73 gears with 37" tires and eventually doing a doubler transfer case so I can cruise on long trips and still have low end. Thanks!
I used an Advance Adapters 712577 bellhousing, and the slave cylinder bracket that can be bought to go with it. I DO NOT recommend using this setup, because it's designed for GM gas engines, and the starter is too big for the notch in the housing, and the slave cylinder bracket puts the slave up against the oil filter. The only reason I used that bellhousing was because the stock NV4500 bellhousing setup, the slave cylinder hits the driveshaft unless you have about a 3"-4" lift.
Nice ride! thought about swapping out my 3spd manny for the nv45 since I bought it, but since it's giving me no problems and the nv45 doesn't seem to up the top speed by much I think I'll just leave er be. Plus I've grown to love the granny gear (even though I barley use it) handy for crawln n hauln
Dann ORourke Having overdrive would make more difference than you'd think. The great thing about the NV4500 is that it has both the low granny first gear, and overdrive too.
There's a guy down the street from me that has an 86 C20 crew cab with the 6.2 in it. I'm really debating on getting it. Right now I just have a standard 83 K10 with a built 350. Would it be worth the trade off?
Awesome suburban the straight pipes sound badass and I have always liked 6.2 diesels. I was curious about what bell housing a guy should use for a swap like that and what flywheel , clutch setup do you use? Also would that nv4500 bolt right up to a np205 transfer case? The reason I ask these questions is I wanna buy a 1985 gmc high sierra 1ton 4x4 and it has a 6.2 diesel , turbo 400 trans , np205 transfer with 4:10 gears. It just screams going 55 - 60 mph and I think the 5 speed overdrive would make that truck drivable at hwy speeds.
Thanks! If I did this swap again, I'd find a 1995+ GM NV4500, and use the stock GM bellhousing. That bell uses an internal slave which will save the trouble of driveshaft clearance issues or having to use an aftermarket bell like I did. If that NP205 has the 6 bolt round pattern transmission adapter then it will bolt up to a 4x4 NV4500 no problem. I can't remember if they changed from the figure 8 to the round adapter in 85 or 86. If it's the figure 8 pattern you'll need to buy an adapter kit.
Great commentary on this vehicle, although a touch longer than needed IMO.But still enjoyed it, 'specially the NV swap. You mentioned an "Advanced Adapter." They also make a gear splitter. Thought for a minute you had one. Cool vehicle. I'ld also put some mufflers on it. But that's me. Thanks for sharing.
Mossy500A I can't say, I've never driven anything with an SM465, but from what I've heard it shifts much better. I've driven several trucks with NV4500s and really like them.
The SM465 is a 4spd with a low non-syncro 1st gear. It's tough as nails, but not nearly as smooth shifting as the 4500, plus it does not have an OD gear.
Damned sweet setup. My old Diesel Burb had the TH400, the one I run now has the 700R4, always wanted an NV4500 setup. Automatic...rhymes with PROBLEMATIC. Not that the TH400 wasnt bulletproof, id just feel better with a standard...
@The Flatfender, what was your top speed with the 6.2 before you switch out for the NV4500. and i know these things were slow, but how exactly slow? i'm looking into buying a CUCV, and was wondering if its possible to cruise at highway speeds (65-70 or so) without the engine screaming its head off. ( of course, after having removed the govenor that i've heard about the CUCV's having). the reason why i'm looking into one is a combindation of things. these engines are renown for their reliability if not for their power (and seeing as i don't really haul heavy loads i won't be needing a 500+ lb-ft. Cummins anytime soon), and the fact that they get about the same mileage, if not a bit better, than my current 4.3 v6 s10. watching these videos like your's on TH-cam has me wanting an old 6.2 for myself, because i love the rumbling clatter. also, have you upgraded your 6.2 to make a bit more power? i can't remember exactly if you mentioned it or not.
+TD7497 The overdrive in the NV4500 is the same as what the 700R4 had, so there's no change in cruising speed. The biggest detriment to highway driving with the 6.2 is the lack of power in naturally aspirated form. It can run 75-80 on flat ground no problem, but when you get in the hills it's lucky to hold 60-65. CUCV's have 4.56 gears in them, which is what I have in this Suburban now, which helps some on acceleration, but 75 MPH is about 2800 RPM in overdrive, and I get about 14 MPG highway. I would imagine adding a turbo would help alot, but I plan on just doing a Cummins 12 valve swap in the future.
staying old-school mechanical for simplicity in the future? i would do the same. as it sits now, though, is your 'Burb fairly livable to drive around ever day on county routes and tolerable on the rare road trip? or would i be better off to locate a Ford/International IDI or a 12v Cummins in the long run if i were to go diesel because of the fact they can keep up with the gassers of their era? yes, i do know that a Cummins would be the best bet in terms of power, and that is what i would want if i were to go diesel. but 1st-gen trucks are especially hard to come by in the rust belt up here. this is where i was contemplating a 6.2, because GM sold so many of these trucks that even up here i keep finding 6.2's in about half of the square trucks on craigslist, and most still have solid frames. thanks for sharing your insight.
+TD7497 believe it or not the 6.5 td would be a good option too. I got 2 of them and there just awsome. 1 stock 1 is about 320 horse. light all 6 of my tires up on my dually. and they sound awsome
To add to this; I have a 700r4 in my 6.2 K20 on 285/75/16 tires. As long as I stay under 65 or so, I still get 18mpg. When i get over 70, mileage plummets.
+TD7497 Believe it or not, my 6.2 keeps up with everything around. At red lights, the 6.2 takes off as fast as everything out there. If I'm in a hurry, it easily leaves everything behind. It wouldn't win races, but for daily driving, plenty of power.
130 was the stock output of the early ones, they bumped it up to 143 in later production years. The military version that was in Hummvees and CUCV's put out 165
awesome I have a k30 srw that I did a 6.2 swap in and also an nv4500 I love mine mine has 4.10s and its actually quick for a 6.2 but I am only running 265s standard load on alloys did you unhook your egr because if you do it will help it out alot and I mean alot would you consider the nv4500 the best thing for these beacase I know I do I got my k30 to do a cummins swap but my donor was an auto I got the nv4500 later then decided to try the nv4500 with the 6.2 I put them together and fell in love and sold the 6bt btw what model galaxy is that on the dash
I have not messed with the EGR. I plan to turbocharge it this summer so it'll get deleted then. I think that the NV4500 is probably the best choice for all around use, but transmission selection really depends on what you want from the truck. If I did alot of towing with it I would want a NV5600 or a ZF6-650. If I wanted to get really good fuel mileage I'd go with a 6L80 automatic. The CB is a Galaxy model DX 919.
That's one of the ash tray cup holders from LMC truck. The shifter would hit it when it was in the ash tray, so I took the try mount part off and bolted it to the dash.
What size straigh pipes. I have 3 inch single pipe with a 2.5 inch glasspack on my 6.2 and its deep but not loud enough. I love the sound of yours and would like to replicate it
+The Flatlander ok thanks man. By tge way I would greatly appreciate if you check out my channel and maybe give me some tips and ideas! I love your channel and cant wait to see more videos of your 6.2.
Hahaha, Big Red 6.2 Build! Ahh shoot, that sucks! (I hope that didn't *really* happen!) Looks like your caps key is on its way out too! :-D Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (USA)!
tyler colburn Not by a longshot. I have about $4200 in it with the transmission, tires, paint, A/C, weatherstripping, and other little details I've put into it.
I lived in Searcy , then Beebe, then lived my last few years in Mac Rae . I live in Illinois now , I've been back here 3 years now , but I sure do miss Arkansas .
they went popular before because the 6.9l and the 7.3l International Diesel were 1st before the 5.9l Cummins was next before the Chevy Duramax came last.
International's 6.9 and 7.3 (indirect injection- IDI) came before the cummins. Powerstroke came around '95 and was direct injection. The 7.3 IDI and the 7.3 Powerstroke (direct injection) are nothing alike. The 6.2 GM diesel, made by Detroit Diesel, came a year before the 6.9 IDI (around '82). The duramax came in 2001.
Im an old ford guy but even a ford guy needs an old school chevy around!
There is something magic about a square body! Especially diesel and manual
I Absofuckinglutely love old Chevy trucks, suburbans, & vans.
I've always identified as a Ford guy myself but honestly... I just love old steel especially old loud Manual and the sound of mechanical gas and diesels with no stupid computers
I have no idea why I like this so much. I guess it's the combo of a diesel Suburban with a stick shift.
LOL, a *stick* Suburban?! I thought I'd never see one of these! How cool!
+MaxxFordham They're out there, just extremely rare. That's why I made mine haha.
Wait... " *made* " yours? How can you have "made" one? Making vehicles is the factory's job, isn't it?
Don't be so literal. It was an automatic; I put a manual in it.
Don't be so figurative. There's nothing wrong with being literal. If people were never literal then this world would be so much more confusing and confused than it already is. Don't expect people to not be literal sometimes.
Buddy had a 80s burban with a 454, 4x4 and MT. Beast rig.
I am glad i found this video. I just bought a 6.2 out of a M1009 and all my buddies are ragging on me for it saying that the engine will be un bearably slow, and too loud to. Hear yourself think in. +The Flatlander Tuned up, they're pretty quick. Exhaust, intake, IP.
Awesome Video, Im a 6.2 & 6.5 Diehard fan. Love these beasts!
I absolutely love these trucks! Got a 83 silverado 6.2 that I'm fixing up the injection pump in. Ah they sound so nice!
That's awesome I'm currently replacing the injection pump in mine should be up and going today!
That sounds amazing like the interior of a HMMWV. Buddy of mine has a diesel 90s Suburban and it's always funny to hear that sound from a Chevy...almost jealous of it.
I have 94 6.5 turbo diesel Suburban 4x4 and 84 GMC Suburban 2 wheel drive I'm sub for your channel
god i love the square body trucks
Man I love it I’m a New Hampshire boy and have spent many storms in old 6.2 6.5 diesels building a 91 hd now
Thanks for giving a ride! Nice video. And if somthing sounds so nice it doesnt matter if its "loud" ; )
Turbo on that thing would wake it right up. Neat ol burb!
That would be lovely
Smooth and quiet inside! I had a pool ball on my first car in 76, an 8 ball. You are doing well.
I'm saddened that this video was so old. I sure did enjoy this. Felt like we was riding with you.
Holy crap when I see what you Americans do with your trucks I often wonder why i feel the need to drive mine so easy 😂😂
I feel your pain on having a slug. I have an 85 k10 Silverado with the wimpy 305 and the wimpier 3.08 axle ratios. Floor it and it just makes more noise and sucks gas.
Joe 305s ain’t that bad, my 87 has a 305 2:73’s, it’s slow but I believe if it had Lower gears, it would be alright.
Nice truck! Sounds great!
good video of the truck and good overall coverage of your truck. keep it up! would like to see some winter one come soon lol
This is awesome. I just picked up a 85 suburban with nv4500, has a small block though. It was sitting for a while and cylinder 3 gave up driving home. awesome video and camera work! love the swap!
You have earned a subscriber good sir! :)
I love the video man!! You should do more with the burban and maybe some towing videos
that is a SICK truck man. goshdang
Thanks man! I love it. Check out the new video I just posted with an update of what all I've done to her over the past year, and some video of her in the mud.
So fun those 6.2 off road
Hell yea for a nv 4500 and 6.2
Where did you get the bell-housing and the hydraulic clutch, and how did you get it to fit the 6.2?
People hate on the 6.2 but you mess with the exhaust say glass pack or straight pipe the sound great .
I've got a 85 Scottsdale flatbed k10 with the 6.2l has dual thrush tubes exit on both sides sounds amazing.... Not so sure all my neighbours think the same while it warms up at 6am, but I love it... Sounds like an old Massey tractor!
Nice rig man, and a lot of fun to drive.
Love this video!
This is my kind ol burb
If you still have the truck you should do a mpg run and a RPM / speed run as well
And what's the final drive ratio?
Love the truck!!!
Good video and test drive.
did that transmission bolt right up or what did you have to change I got a r speed Manuel out of a Chevy I want to put it my 6.2
May I ask exactly WHERE did you find all the parts you needed to mount the NV4500 to your 6.2L diesel??? WHAT make, model and year bellhousing did you use? Hey Flatlander, what problems did you have with the Advance Adapters bell housing with the 6.2? Starter clearance? Love your suburban. I’ve got an ‘89. Planning on converting to the NV4500.
Manual transmission suburbans seem really cool. Is that a bench seat at the front? If so, could three people sit at the front like some trucks?
I have a 1984 K5 6.2 I'm converting to nv4500 is there a way i can contact you to talk to you about how to do this.
LOL, have fun dude!
Greetings from Germany ;D
I'm a little late to this but thinking of swapping my blazer to a manual. how fast could you get this truck running on the highway
Nice ride! thought about swapping out my 3spd manny for the nv45 since I bought it, but since it's giving me no problems and the nv45 doesn't seem to up the top speed by much I think I'll just leave er be. Plus I've grown to love the granny gear (even though I barley use it) handy for crawln n hauln
Dann ORourke Having overdrive would make more difference than you'd think. The great thing about the NV4500 is that it has both the low granny first gear, and overdrive too.
I wish I had one of those
I've got a 90 sierra with the sm465, man what a bitch to drive!!
how much fuel does it burn? great vid, thanks
I don't really know. I ain't took it on a trip long enough to find out. It has the 40 gallon tank, and I go a long time between fill ups.
There's a guy down the street from me that has an 86 C20 crew cab with the 6.2 in it. I'm really debating on getting it. Right now I just have a standard 83 K10 with a built 350. Would it be worth the trade off?
Sounds great! almost sounds like a v8 gas
Not surprising, the 6.2 and 6.5 turbo diesels are based on a gasser block, a buick v8 if I'm not mistaken
@@baloneyfishman that was the 5.7 deisel. Not 6.2 or 6.5
The 5.7 was an oldsmobile block it was built off of
Sweet ride.
What rear end are you running in that? And have you found any better fitting bellhousings you'd recommend?
If that NP205 has the 6 bolt round pattern transmission adapter then it will bolt up to a 4x4 NV4500 no problem. I can't remember if they changed from the figure 8 to the round adapter in 85 or 86. If it's the figure 8 pattern you'll need to buy an adapter kit.
did you have to use an adapter to get the 6.2 to work with the nv4500?
I did, but it's not necessary. Read my post below.
Do you have barn doors or tailgate window? My tailgate window went out on me & I'm debating on a barn door conversion
It has tailgate

The box of Federal shells on the dash, is a nice touch.

Well, it gets great fuel mileage. mine always starts right up like yours.
Mine to... Used to take a bit to crank, but I put 2 new interstate batteries in and it fires right up now

130 was the stock output of the early ones, they bumped it up to 143 in later production years. The military version that was in Hummvees and CUCV's put out 165
Hey bud when ya gonna make some new videos of your truck
Do you have the part numbers for the part used to complete the swap to nv4500
Thanks so much for posting, many good laughs.... somehow I have doubts whether you'll embrace EVs! hahahaha ;-)
nice headliner
awesome I have a k30 srw that I did a 6.2 swap in and also an nv4500 I love mine mine has 4.10s and its actually quick for a 6.2 but I am only running 265s standard load on alloys did you unhook your egr because if you do it will help it out alot and I mean alot would you consider the nv4500 the best thing for these beacase I know I do I got my k30 to do a cummins swap but my donor was an auto I got the nv4500 later then decided to try the nv4500 with the 6.2 I put them together and fell in love and sold the 6bt btw what model galaxy is that on the dash

3.42 or 3.73 rear gear? Thing cruises
Probably 3.73
What kinda MPG do you see with this?
I don’t have personal experience but I’ve heard of people getting 20+ mpg with it
Good video!
Does this thing role coal
Nice!
Where did you get that cup holder and how did you mount it?
That's one of the ash tray cup holders from LMC truck. The shifter would hit it when it was in the ash tray, so I took the try mount part off and bolted it to the dash.
What size straigh pipes. I have 3 inch single pipe with a 2.5 inch glasspack on my 6.2 and its deep but not loud enough. I love the sound of yours and would like to replicate it
+Big Red 6.2 Build I believe mine are 2 1/4" or 2 1/2", I don't remember exactly. The tips are 3x18"
+The Flatlander ok thanks man. By tge way I would greatly appreciate if you check out my channel and maybe give me some tips and ideas! I love your channel and cant wait to see more videos of your 6.2.
+Big Red 6.2 Build
I was curious about something of yours too: Did your question mark key break?
MaxxFordham my question mark key fell off about a year ago when i dropped my laptop down the steps lol
Hahaha, Big Red 6.2 Build! Ahh shoot, that sucks! (I hope that didn't *really* happen!) Looks like your caps key is on its way out too! :-D
Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (USA)!
What year is the transmission and how did you adapt it to the engine
He got it out of a 1994 Chevrolet 2500 Pickup
I have a 1984 k20 Burb I put a nv4500 in also 6.2L and straight piped. I don't have any interior though lol

Stock 15" rally wheels with 33/12.50r-15 Dick Cepeck Mud Countrys.
wer did you bay your bellhousing ??
+Joakim Engedalen The bellhousing came from Advance Adapters, but a stock NV4500 bellhousing will also work in most cases.
5 speed? Aftermarket? My '88 man has low 1 and then 1, 2, 3
Yep.
The old granny first....
Hi! 4 or 5 manual gearbox?
yoyodu69 - The NV4500 is a 5 speed
Does it have a computer...? hope not!
Dude,I bet you can do a good Elvis impression
Haha, I don't know, I've never tried.
would you sell it
Depends on how much cash you put in front of me lol.
would 1500 buy it
tyler colburn Not by a longshot. I have about $4200 in it with the transmission, tires, paint, A/C, weatherstripping, and other little details I've put into it.
where in Arkansas do you live?
Woodruff County
I lived in Searcy , then Beebe, then lived my last few years in Mac Rae . I live in Illinois now , I've been back here 3 years now , but I sure do miss Arkansas .
the main reason nv4500 were built was to have a 5th gear with granny first,NO OTHER.
Sounds like you can fucking deal with it, buddy.
Call me strange, but it's a TRUCK, it's supposed to be loud inside.
I'm looking for square body, you got a beauty.
Diesel chevys aren't as popular is diesel dodges or diesel fords are.
Sad isn't it?
they went popular before because the 6.9l and the 7.3l International Diesel were 1st before the 5.9l Cummins was next before the Chevy Duramax came last.
Uh, Cummins came WAY before the Powerstroke. lol
Nate Nimetz Uh, no. Cummins has been out since the 50's or even before that.
I meant the B-series Cummins, behind the Dodge Ram, not the company itself. They've been out since the 20s!
chumlee?
OK, OK, I’ll take it, how much? Hahaha!
Fuckin mint👌🏼👌🏼
Flatlander put an nv4500 in my blazer
I gotta 1993 half ton diesel the one in my profile picture love the thing to death I want to put a 5 speed in it was it hard to do
You should be an elvis impersonator.
thought about putting a 400sbc or 454bbc?
+stockingandblossom1 NO
+stockingandblossom1 *Real* rigs don't have spark plugs. ;)
+Richard Vanstone Real rigs do 0-60 in less than 20 seconds ;)
silverbell871 These 6.2's are quicker than the average 350. Never timed my 0-60, but its not bad.
Man we have the same profile pic see? 😂
actually, that's mad, my 1.9 diesel has 130bhp and 228lbft torque!
they actually hide an engine like yours inside, and the outside is just armor and the looks that we tend to like here, you know. V8
😁😁
why would you WASTE an nv4500 on a gutless 6.2.,ONLY IF IT WAS FREE & FITTED.
harry walker - That’s your opinion and you know what they say about opinions
