    Tom, Thank you for doing what you do. You have educated me with all of your content and often tell people to check out your videos. I can’t wait for your videos on charging at home. I picked up my Lightning on June 3rd and installed the CSP July 3rd. Getting some weird errors and opened ticket with Ford but they seem to be struggling. Wondering if you have any issues and/or tweaks. Thanks again Tom. BTW..I am in South Jersey

      @@anthonyR9768 This appears to be a rampant issue if you use the max 80A. Don't have to be in a hot climate or hot ambient environment. Seems like a design issue - maybe Tom will run into it if he can install on a 100A circuit. As a workaround, people are having success by turning down the max charge amps with the rotary switch or the app. Will be interesting to see if Ford / Sunrun can come up with an actual fix. Otherwise this isn't an 80A EVSE as it is presently behaving with the necessary de-rating.

    I'd be curious how much range drops off at 75 MPH. Most of the interstates here in Florida are 70 MPH and I set my ICE F150 to 75 and with a 36 gallon take I've gotten over 700 miles out of it many times and average around 630-650 combined. Any chance you'd run a test at 75?

  • @korswe

    Always giving Ford and other legacy autos the full benefit of the doubt. When the range on the Tesla did not meet the EPA estimate, you showed so much disappointment. Can't have it both ways.

    Great review. So the average driver will get between 230 to 250 miles of range as they will not drive to zero state of charge. So how are people having to pay again for that extended battery? Most are sticking with the smaller battery because of the costs. When to make videos for the charging station please let us know how much you paid for that charger and how much it costs to have it installed without the family/friend discount. It’s important for people to know the truth about the cost to own and operate this truck. You have the price of the truck, the price of the charging station, the price for installing the charging station, and the cost to use a public charging station after free charging runs out.

    This was a very good test. I'm sure a little extra wind resistance would also effect the mileage range.just a.04 miles/kWh more and 280 mile range would've been achieved, which could've easily been obtained with a little tail wind.

Curious to see if you have the same issue when you get to installing yours. Hopefully you will be able to use the full 80A to test with your home electrical.

    You went farther than I thought you would. Highway driving in an EV is one of the least efficient ways to drive an EV. Get that miles per KWH to 2.5 and you got 321 miles. I’ve seen these trucks in person and they are certainly impressive. And they can actually be cheaper than the gas models depending on how you equip them…
    Now if they will just make my Maverick Hybrid that I’ve been waiting over a year for…

    • @FreedomToRoam86
      @FreedomToRoam86 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hybrids are kind of fun, too. I still have an 2009 Escape Hybrid, and the 2021 F150 Hybrid. Becomes kind of game to see how much you can get it to use the electric battery/motor. In a way, when my LIghtning comes, I will miss that... but not much! Then the game will be how much miles I can squeeze per charge with regen.

    • @JBrav6
      @JBrav6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the biggest issue/factor people ignore is the wind resistance that occurs at higher speeds.. you drive that Lightning at 65mph and I’m sure you’ll get closer to your 2.5m/kw maybe even close to 3..
      I got my Bolt battery replaced and drove from Las Vegas to Ventura and needed just two quick stops to charge ..
      Topography and climate then speed

      @@BB-lx7os the seats are a delete item now, per the lightning forum boards. I should be getting my Pro in the next few weeks. How long after production did you truck arrive at the dealer? According to the specs from Ford, the extended range gets 409 Watts per mile (131,000 watts/320 miles) and the standard range gets 426 watts per mile (98,000 watts/230 miles) Thats a 3 to 4 % worse mileage on the standard range battery which is lighter by 2 to 3 humanoids. TFL has the truck weights at 6590 for the base extended vs 6171 for the base standard range. The difference is 419 pounds.....That should result in better mileage for the standard range battery not carrying around that extra 419 lbs....Am I missing something here? When I get my truck I will update you on the watts/mile.

    Misleading! On an EV no driver will want less than 15% state of charge left over to whatever destination. I get anxiety if my EV predicts less than 20%. Also to keep the battery happy I don’t charge to 100%, just 90%. That leaves a useable range of 75% which in this video would come out to 202 miles of range. Also, no one drives 70. If you drive 75 to 80 your range will decrease exponentially below 202 miles. The biggest problem with the Lightening is it’s a barn door pushing through the wind. High speed range is not good.

    The current 1st generation lithium batteries are just not cutting it for road trips. At the risk of sounding like a broken record - the EV auto industry really needs the next generation battery technology ASAP (solid state?). I need a pickup that I can haul my kayaks and mountain bikes, and all my gear, and up to 4 guys and have 350+ miles of range.

    Assuming 270 miles @ 70 mph and a 131 KWh battery, that's 34 KW (~45 HP) on average out of the battery to get the truck down the road at that speed.

    The difference in wind resistance between 55 mph and 70 mph is quite large on any vehicle much less a pickup truck that wasn't designed to be particularly aerodynamic. Keeping between 55 and 60 mph will drastically improve range.

    Great content. Looking forward for a test with a travel trailer. 2 things I’d like to see - first, energy use (kw per mile) and total range, second - a 400 mile trip including charging - basically, how long it takes it to charge in the real world as part of a towing test (should be similar to regular test but might be different due to strain on system right after towing).

    • @pstoneking3418
      @pstoneking3418 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can expect range to be cut in half or more depending on the weight you're towing. An extended range battery will charge from 15% to 80% in around 41 minutes. Everyone that has done any research on the lightning should know this vehicle is not designed for long distance towing. Nor is it designed for long distance travelers who are in a hurry to get anywhere. This is a vehicle designed, for great towing and payload capabilities, if used in your local area and you plan on charging at home.

    • @ranig2848
      @ranig2848 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pstoneking3418 I'm well aware as I've towed small and large trailers with the Model X but am still curious how the F-150 does due to it's size, weight and battery. BTW, from my own experience and looking at towing reviews (for EV and gas trucks), towing at high speeds is much more effected by the size of the trailer (it's front and volume) than the weight. Travel trailers and hauling trailers have huge fronts that act like big parachutes (or sails) that cause crazy drag and thus increase energy use dramatically and reduce range significantly (on electric and gas). Still looking forward to seeing anyone doing a travel trailer with the F-150 on a 400-500 mile trip - including the charge time.

    • @4literv6

      Because Ford didn't spend the $ to build in a clutch disengagement pack for the front or rear motors like some other dual motor evs have.
