- Tasmania is known for it's breath-taking scenery, but Tassie is also a place with a brutal and tragic history. In this episode we make a sobering visit to the Port Arthur Historic Site, a brutal penal colony, and also the site of Australia's worse mass shooting.
After paying our respects, we head out into Nature again, the great healer, and undertake the challenging Cape Hauy hike, up (and down) over 4,000 steps along the Southern Hemisphere's Highest Sea Cliffs.

Wow! once again. I'm so lucky to be able to tag along with you guys. Congrats Sue: you have mastered the intricate, not to mention stylish, Nigel dive. Nigel is a man after my own heart - butter with everything whenever possible. I'm so happy that you mentioned the masacre at Port Arthur.
Thanks David, it certainly couldn’t go unmentioned.
I'm with Nigel on the butter thing! You can never have too much butter!! LOL
with vegemite yes, but not Peanut Butter...
@@nigelandsueadventures With vegemite, definitely more butter! LOL
Look forward to watching you both each week ❤
Thanks so much for being here! Hope you enjoy our latest video too.
@@nigelandsueadventures We did, thank you ☺️ great diving Sue!
Still watching you guys weekly love it 🇮🇪
Thanks so much Peter!! Glad you’re enjoying them.
Hi Nigel and Sue.... I was born and raised in Tasmania, and have visited Port Arthur many many times......but it wasne until my last visit that I found out about, and took the time to go and see......The old COAL MINES HISTORIC SITE on the other side of the peninsula...
This was a part of the Port Arthur penal system, and the conditions there were worse than that of the main prison at Port Arthur. Cells were underground, and just a little over maybe 5ft wide x 6ft long. The conditions were brutal, working in the coal mine, or pushing carts from the mine to the jetty and back. A part of Port Arthur I never knew about.....well worth a look.
Also, just a little further on is Lime Bay camping area.....beautiful place to stay. (no facilities from memory)
We went to Lime Bay, but didn't stop at the Coal Mines. Didn;t realise it was so interesting! We have a long list of places to visit on our next trip to Tassie!
Shivers up my shins with that cliff edge view... lol Another amazing video ❤ Thanks heaps
Yeah it was pretty crazy! Such a great hike though
This was absolutely amazing, fantastic shots!
Thanks a lot Ervin, glad you enjoyed it!
Tasmania the magnificent thanks for sharing xx
It really is! Thanks for watching.
What an amazing video filled with such amazing footage, and that hike that you both did was amazing and Sue I was with you on the emotional side with those breathtaking views. Port Arthur when we visited was amazing but so sad at the same time. Such hard times and so much suffering. Thank you both doe sharing. Safe travels. Coen and Jay
Thanks guys, yeah it’s really mixed emotions visiting somewhere like that.
Love going to Tassie. Will be organising another trip soon. That walk looks spectacular. Also, definitely butter with peanut butter as it elevates the flavour a couple of notches.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did! Tassie that is, not the sandwich
Butter like slice cheese and peanut paste fresh bread. Yum
Oh that sounds so decadent! Thanks for watching!
I lived in tassie in the 80s and visited Port Arthur multiple times when you only had to pay for guided tours. It's changed so much. Looks amazing now so informative
Yeah the ticket lasts for two days and you could totally spend two days there, there’s so much to learn.
Another amazing video. Port Arthus sure is a magnificent but a sad place. The Isle of the dead tour is well worth it as is the ghost tour. A relative of my first cousin lived at Port Artur after his parents died and was taken in by the Chaplin. When I visited the memorial it was very surreal and not a sound could be heard not even birds. The place has changed from my first visit back in 1981. I think I told you that my GGG Grandfather was a convict there for a while before being sent to the coal mines at Lymington in the Huon Valley. I am going back next February and those free camps look very interesting. The only downside is I will be on the motorbike so I have to watch sticky fingers if I am not about. Don't forget to check out Tasman arch, The Blow hole and if the little kiosk is still there the yogurt with muesli and a rabbit pie. As for the peanut butter defiantly butter on both slices then the spread. I also like crunchy peanut butter and chicken crisps. Cut the sanger into strips and enjoy with a cold beer. I look forward to the next episode.
Tasmania is incredible, such a stunning hike! 🤩 I’m with you Sue on the peanut butter (no butter) BUT my husband is with Nigel (he always has butter with it! 😁
Yay!!! Finally someone else agrees with me!
@@nigelandsueadventures 😂
Gorgeous gorgeous cliffs! and... another Suziedive.. yayy
What an amazing hike/walk. Scenically rewarding!!!
It’s was sooooo good! Definitely one of our favourites. Thanks for watching!
😂 I’m with Nigel on that one. Definitely have to have butter with z the peanut butter. Enjoyed the video as always. Some absolutely phenomenal scenery and of course I knew you’d both make it. That last park spot was lovely. 🤗💖
Yeah we really loved it. Looking back it’s a pity Tassie was so rushed but we really did get to see some amazing places. Thanks for watching Lynne 🧡
I put butter on one slice & peanut butter on the other slice. Avoids butter in the peanut jar
makes sense. I'm surprised so many people have butter with their peanut butter!
That was an epic hike , such stunning scenery. I’m really loving your Tassie series. Sue , you have the Nigel dive down pat 🤣 funny as.
I’ve seen that you make that potato pizza quite a bit. Is it just pesto and potato for the toppings? It looks and sounds delicious.
Yeah, and a bit of red onion and a drizzle of olive oil. So delicious!
Another great video we stay in bed on a Sunday morning with a cupa until we watch your latest, I see many times you are taking still photographs, as an amateur photographer would love to see some of your shot tagged onto the end of each the video.
Thanks Peter we appreciate you watching! Have you checked out our blog? Lots of our still shots on there.
Definitely butter
Quite the hike and swim! We're headed to Alaska for a couple of weeks. . . Epic scenery too but a bit colder😂 And absolutely no butter on a peanut butter sandwich.
Oh I would really love to go to Alaska one day. Thanks for agreeing about the sandwich! Haha we are in the minority.
Definitely butter! 😂
I've always put butter on bread with any toppings including peanut butter.
I mean vegemite, 100% add butter. I just think peanut butter is oily enough!
@@nigelandsueadventures I have in the past questioned myself for butting butter on when it's peanut-"butter", but it just adds a creamy layer and helps the bread not seem so dry.
I think I'm going to have to try it! @@JimmyCall
Thomas Patricia Garcia Sarah Hall Charles
you have to have butter with your peanut butter
We came in on the Queen Elizabeth last year, not a bad way to visit….
Oh luxury!! We saw cruise ships in Hobart but not at Port Arthur
Definitely butter with peanut butter 😊 otherwise it’s to dry
Looks like I’ve been totally outvoted!!
NO BUTTER 🥹🥹🥹
Finally someone agrees with me!!!
I like butter on mine.
I’m so out-numbered on this one haha
Must have butter
I’m so in the minority!!
My dad got the hey gebies at Port Arther, mum felt nothing.😊 butter with peanut switches.
Great vid yet again. Thankyou both.😊
Yeah it was a strange vibe thats for sure. and I've definitely been out-voted with the sandwiches. Thanks for watching!
Stunning!!! Have to admit I got emotional all over again seeing the names at the massacre memorial. It hit me hard when we visited a few years ago... Port Arthur is absolutely fascinating though. We braved ridiculous cold and wind (in December mind you) to go out to the Isle of the Dead (which was amazing) and did the ghost tour at night, which scared the pants off me hahaha. We didn't see that little 4 door solitary confinement room though. I'd be like you Sue, ready to get out now!!! Cape Hauy looked amazing, but I'm not sure my knees would be up to that one - so thanks for showing us. Felt a wee bit queasy as the selfie stick went over the edge though 😳🤢
Yeah it really is sad and sobering. It would have been good to do the night tour, it’s all quite expensive though. The hike was amazing!
Amazing views, my father lived into his 90's. was born in the UK { Glasgow } , he would { try } to put butter on the sandwiches when we were kids & he was making lunch . He mentioned his mum made them with butter as a wee child , us kids would put in the request to hold the butter & use mayo please..
Hmmmm never tried mayo instead of butter! Thanks for watching
I've always summed Tassie up as, "fresh". Maybe this is why it leans into really clean and healthy foods.
It does have the cleanest freshest air in the world!
Of course you need butter before the peanut butter 👍🏻
Clearly I’m doing it wrong!!
Yep with butter 😋 .. great vid
Nooooo!! Haha, thanks for watching Deb!
Always butter!
I’m so out-numbered in this one!!
Butter 😁
Booooo!! I’ve been seriously out numbered here!!
