That chorus is so rock hard, and it comes out of nowhere, the unexpecting listener just gets hammered with great rock music after being lulled to sleep...
Matt Bellamy is one of those people that were born to write and play music. The sheer talent expressed in the riffs, composition and vocals is astonishing.
I would say more grunge. The metal sound is typically characterized by sharper, "heavier" palm-muted guitar work, ala the style's originator, Black Sabbath. Hence the term "heavy metal". Grunge, on the other hand, was characterized by a more punk-like heavy guitar distortion, dissonance, loud "wall of sound" open riffs, etc.
dead star, stockholm syndrome, hysteria(2002 version) and reapers are kinda metal/alt metal to me, and omg that part in the globalist(4:33 - 6:35) is fucking sick

I have fond memories of finishing my shift at the supermarket I worked at as a 16 year old... Putting my headphones on and cycling home in the dark with this album blaring down my ears to keep me company
Random fact for non-gamers, this song is remixed and used many times in the 'drawn to life' soundtrack in songs associated with the villain of said game.
The Origin of Symmetry is still my favourite Muse album. Used to love them back then. Can't say the last few albums have contained much to grab me, but this track is immense.
This is the first Muse song I ever heard. My sister gave me a mix CD in like 2006, and when I got to this gem I was like omg what on earth is this amazingness
I've only just noticed it's a 6 minute track! Been playing this song since its release. Even feels quick to play along to. It's not as if it's slow tempo either.
Muse should be considered for one of the greatest bands of all time and immortalized for it. I can't think of many other bands where album builds, evolves, and one ups the last as consistently and as expertly as Muse. For a band that's been going since 1994, there ability to continue unique and intriguing music is legendary.
Throughout the years, it's been one hell of a great song. Does anyone remember the movie _High Tension_ (French horror film that came out in 2003)? This song played in it during its big on-edge moments, and it fit well. Don't think a better song could've been chosen.
Look, I'm no a muse fan, or wouldn't call myself one but I respect their music. I just realised when this single was released, it was the same day when I was born. I wish I was joking. Especially when the title is called New Born. This just feels like too much of coincidence to me. I've been living here on earth for 18 years and I'm just discovering this now....WHAT
Very close to an Ultravox album. Successors perhaps. But this album is flawless. Probably the greatest album of the turn of the century. It's catchy but Dali like melts perception. The final track just baffling, but you're along for the ride. From the first track you're strapped in.
Muse are eletronical and musical band. So incredible, i love them, they always change rhytm. never gets old. Matt took the voice of a grea hero of music Jeff Buckley. Three man, one bomb of music! Oh lord, thanks.
I remember the first time I heard this song.... it played at the end of a French horror movie, which I just found out was called "High Tension". The movie was alright, but when the piano part came on for the closing credits I was like, "God damn that's some creepy notes that perfectly fit a horror movie" Then the rest of the song "New Born" played..... oh my God I found it online and listened to it 50 times in a row. Just a great song.
You start the song... we're on a rocket ship to somewhere... 1:25 minute in, we're now crashed on Mars... and the only way to stay alive is to play music, the best music you have ever made.... This is what happened.

That chorus is so rock hard, and it comes out of nowhere, the unexpecting listener just gets hammered with great rock music after being lulled to sleep...
Michael W. Bush The beginning is like a music box or lullaby!
when i first heard this i was hooked holy shit i never expected it to hit so hard
Definitely not lulled to sleep but i get what you're saying
I'm obsessed with this description
The bass line in this is EXHAUSTING to play, holy nuts
tha1ne It's like a knife in my left hand by the time the song reaches the outro.
tha1ne Watch 'vkgoeswild' play Hysteria and then stop complaining, especially the last part.
C. S. Christopher I'll complain however I want, go watch it yourself
tha1ne The piano intro needs SERIOUS coordination skills. I play guitar so I gave up.
Kelly14UK I actually find the piano part a whole lot easier to play then the whole song on guitar
Matt Bellamy is one of those people that were born to write and play music. The sheer talent expressed in the riffs, composition and vocals is astonishing.

progressive- space rock with a bit metal sound. These are the true Muse. Fantastic song.

Grunge, on the other hand, was characterized by a more punk-like heavy guitar distortion, dissonance, loud "wall of sound" open riffs, etc.
Interesting, I did not know that. So the level of distortion does not actually define metal?
dead star, stockholm syndrome, hysteria(2002 version) and reapers are kinda metal/alt metal to me, and omg that part in the globalist(4:33 - 6:35) is fucking sick
+zer0 95 agreed
progressive is when it uses odd time signatures and usually a sharp, guitar tone with the highs turned up. this is not at all progressive
One of my favorite Muse songs. Wow this was teenage years, now I'm 31.
Thanks now I'm sad.
Used to sit next to an absolute Muse fanatic in science, discovered this album through her. If you're out there Megan, thanks for the good times.
I'm not a bass player. And i never played bass. But this bassline is pretty good damn.

that riff/line is honestly the most memorable and beautiful piece of music

chervelle l. I feel like if you're recommending Muse to someone for the first time, New Born is one of the songs to show them.
I'm so immersed in their songs that sometimes (often) I forget that we can hear Matt's breathing between sentences
Honestly never realised his breathing til people started to point it out haha
Absolution gets it the absolute worst lol.
we killing newy with this one
this is 6min long but why does it feel so short?
The first part is so slow and calm you just lose the perception of time and suddenly the song is over

I don’t know, but I get it. When one listens to muse songs, time loses meaning, it’s the only explanation
Time flies by when you are having fun :D
Because it's 6 minutes, it isn't that long
This song has been on repeat for (literally) the whole day
I love the piano beginning. I love how the rest of the song raps around the melody set by the piano.

Man... what a first track for a first album. Killed it.
The song that introduced this great album!
When the muse really rocks
Link it to the world
Link it to yourself
Stretch it like a birth squeeze
The love for what you hide
The bitterness inside
Is growing like the new born
When you've seen, seen
Too much
Too young, young
Soulless is everywhere
Hopeless time to roam
The distance to your home
Fades away to nowhere
How much are you worth?
You can't come down to earth
You're swelling up
You're unstoppable
'Cause you've seen, seen
Too much
Too young, young
Soulless is everywhere
Destroy the spineless
Show me it's real
Wasting our last chance to come away
Just break the silence
'Cause I'm drifting away
Away from you
Link it to the world
Link it to yourself
Stretch it like it's a birth squeeze
And the love for what you hide
And the bitterness inside
Is growing like the new born
When you've seen, seen
Too much
Too young, young
Soulless is everywhere
Destroy the spineless
Show me it's real
Wasting our last chance
To come away
Just break the silence
'Cause I'm drifting away
Away from you
