I have bought my last Whirlpool product because of the con job they pulled on America. This last Whirl-Mex trash brand new washer was a POS, needing service work 3 times in one year with all the plastic parts. Speed Queen sells an honest residential appliance that is an American built powerhouse, better than Maytag ever thought of being as the best home washing machine.
I LOVE this bad boy for proving it can still be done with pride in the USA...

To be fair the REAL MAYTAG COMPANY built good products. This man speaks the truth of how Maytag, and Newton were raped and pilaged by terrible managment at the end and the total butt rape by Whirlpool.

I used to work in a tv repair shop, I'd try to talk customers into fixing their older sets but lots of them would go across the street to circuit city and buy a new one. A few years later they would return those tv's to our shop for repair.

I'm a service tech as well. I beg my customers who still have the older machines to keep them. There are times that I will pull up reviews for the newer machines and show them how much people hate these new machines. I can't tell you how many times that I've found bad control boards, only to tell a customer, that they need to pay $250.00 for the new board. Usually I go out a find one of the older may tag machines, and suggest they spend the $250.00 buying it.

The original mom and pop Maytag dealer repair shop in our area went out of business a few months ago. The Maytag man is truly dead.
At least there is still Speed Queen .

I bought a Maytag in 1979 that worked up until 2005. Replaced it with a Neptune and it's already been replaced with a Samsung. Wish I'd rebuilt my old Maytag.

Your right about Maytag washing machine. My sister purchased one back in 2011 and the tub bearing has failed. The spin cycle doesn't work, so she has to wring clothes by hand.

Actually, the orbital came long before Whirlpool buying them out. I agree that the original transmission did the job just fine and though the orbital could have been better built, it's still better than anything built today. I think they knew that people would give up on that design sooner than later in favor of today's HE models. I'm holding onto my Maytag though. I love it!

  • @Sharkie626
    @Sharkie626 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Whirlpool did not kill Maytag, Maytag (almost) killed themselves.
The Orbital transmission came out in 1985, and was used for a long time before Whirlpool bought the company in 2006. They had nothing to do with the switch from the helical transmission. The Orbital was not 45 degrees, it was 90 degrees. Some time after the 1990s, Maytag started to severely cheapen up on their products, and it was showing. If I remember right, the company lost 9 million dollars in 2004. If Whirlpool never bought the company, the name would not exist today. Whirlpool's direct drive came out in 1986 and was manufactured and sold very regularly until 2011.
All that being said, you're very correct on how the design change was the worst. The Whirlpool-made washers (and the ones with the Maytag name made by them) were good up until 2011 when they stopped selling and regularly making their direct drive model. It was all downhill after that. We have a direct drive that's 27 years old and still works, and is STILL on its original motor coupling. The only parts that have been replaced on it were the agitator dogs (Twice. 2001, and 2016), and the drain pump. Only good washer to buy nowadays is Speed Queen. That's it.

Upon further inspection realized pulley is just pressed on. No pin nos set screw nothin! retail on that motor is Over 300$ with tax! Belt drive not nearly as good as direct

@@homeguestunton Fair Enough. I’ve never been a fan of HE machines much, mostly because they are annoying to fix, expensive to fix and (in my experience) don’t clean as well as a vintage machine. Vintage machines also don’t complain if there is a little too much soap or if the load is slightly off balance. To me vintage machines just do one simple task, WASH.

@@whirlpoolz1200 Well new washers have balance sensors and that’s a good thing. The only vintage washer that did have balance sensors were the old belt drives by Whirlpool made before 1986/1987.

Yeah… this is only half true. The orbital predates the buyout by about 20 years. And they did pretty fine, until Maytag started cheapening construction in the late 90s. Whirlpool was just the kill blow.

Its sad I have been a appliance, HVAC/R, Commercial Cooking equipment contractor for 40 years All manufacturers from Home Appliances, HVAC, and commercial cooking equipment. All make junk example. Old belt driven whirlpool washer, old Maytag washers lasted forever. Then the direct drive whirlpool washers lasted 12-15 years. Maytag Neptune washers killed Maytag. Everything made now from HVAC to home appliances are CRAP parts are made overses. The sad part is the cost of them. I tell everyone to stay away from front loaded washers. Top loaded are the best. More bells and whistles on it more to go wrong. Keep everything as simple as you can . Again for the cost of appliances they should be built better. Wake up AMERICA and MANUFACTURERS. Sorry. Have a blessed Christmas

    Gentlemen,
I know precisely what you are talking about when you say that Maytag washing machines were very good quality. I worked as an audio and television service technician for almost 36 years. When servicing in the electronics departments at service and sales centres where I worked became slack (usually during the summer months), we radio and TV techs helped out in the white goods department. I have serviced those very type of washing machines, seen in the vid, over here in England. Moreover, I have also worked on the commercial versions of those machines - they looked almost identical - they were pale yellow in colour. As for Whirlpool, I never liked servicing their products.
    Phil.

One would think that the new technology would produce a better product. But it is not that way. People are rushing out and buying these new HD LED TV's. And your local Good Will is fulled with the old TV's. Ask most any TV repair man what they think of this new stuff. This new stuff that people are rushing out in droves for. They say its all JUNK !. On avg. they say one will last 3 to 5 yrs. I got one and it died in three months.
It is still under warranty. So we sent it back for repair. We had to have UPS pick it up to take it in for repairs. And that was over a month ago. I have made almost 50 phone calls and 30 some emails to get to this point. But they did say we would get a new one.
So some day when and if we get it. I still have to go back to where I purchased it,
Walmart. And have them transfer the warranty from the old one to the new one.
You guys may want to consider this before rushing out for a new smart TV. You may
end up with a smart ass TV like I did. It's kind of a joke, with these new HD TV's you click it on and you can watch TV surf the web or do the Roku. With the one I had you click it on an it would click itself off, being a smart ass TV.
I would prefer Samsung just give me the money I spent on this smart ass TV.
I would go back to Good Will and get me a few more of these 32-36 TV they have.
Yea $35 or so for a TV that should last another 10 to 15 yrs sounds like a good deal to me.

Samsung TVs are crap. I purchased a Plasma one for my parents and it died a year to the very day that the warranty was up. Samsung sent their guys to replace the control board but it didn't work - they had used a refurbished board. I managed to get my money back from them - took them 3 months. I went out and purchased a Panasonic LCD TV for them instead - not a problem. I've a 6 year old Panasonic Plasma TV and it is hasn't skipped a beat. No more Samsungs for me.
