So we can't supply our soldiers with helmets, boots, or food when on deployment but we can buy Reaper drones armed with Hellfire anti tank air to ground missiles. This , when Ukrainians are using cheap commercial drones with old RPG grenade rounds that can destroy the latest Russian tanks for a few hundred bucks ? Why not pay a few Ukrainian soldiers to emigrate to Canada and show us how to do that? Apparently this government doesn't think there are any Canadian engineers who can figure this out.

The problem with homegrown equipment is when it breaks during a deployment and you're out of parts you need, none of our allies can give us spare parts they may have on hand to fix it because none of them use it. This was a real problem with the CP-107 Argus, it would get grounded during a deployment overseas while the parts were shipped in from Canada.

Instead of replying to each comment about having our own “domestic manufacturing capabilities”, I will stated here. Canada has a robust unmanned aerial vehicle industry! Canada is an industry leader in UAV technology, and has been for nearly 2 decades. I know because I worked in this in the mid 2000s as a junior aerospace engineer. The size and scale of UAV here are on the same level a manned aircraft. Even if Canada had started its domestic development of this side and scale of UAV back when this project started in 2005, there is no guarantee that there would be a platform that was capable of meeting the requirements of this program.

That's the point, lol. Besides, they will be used to survey specific areas for search & rescue and to monitor shipping lanes within Canada like the report said. I doubt they'll just fly them about to see the scenery, lol. Outside of Canada they'll also have designated Areas of Responsibilty (AoR), not just left to fly around randomly.
