  • We bought a home and turned it into a multigenerational house so my parents could live with my husband and I. I wanted to take care of my parents instead of them living in an assisted living home. This is our story..

@@GrandmaLivesInTheBasement Your family of 3 generations living under one roof is BEAUTIFUL!!! 💙
In so many countries this is common and not rare. Sadly, in the US 3 generations living under the same roof is frowned upon by so many. if people would just realize that we as human families are meant to live under the same roof to take care of each other and to pass knowledge on to the grandkids and for the grand kids to pass on the new knowledge to the older generations.
for your mother look into the keto diet and carnvore diet. these diets are healing diets of so many health issues and help to get the person off of Rx drugs which cause so many side effects..Your mother still looks very young & still in good health but, these will help her out tremendously to have a very healthy body even more.
channels to look up for keto diet: Dr Berg, Dr eckberg, Dr Boz
for carnovre diet channels: Dr ken berry, dr shawn baker md podcast, home stead how, kelly hogan, nutrtion with judy, dr chaffee, steak and butter gal (all have endless wonderful vid testimonies from people of all ages (even in their 80's) of getting rid of all health issues from obesity, diabetes type 2, depression, gut issues, brain fog, brain issues, anxiety etc etc it's a veryyyy long list of healing that people have done on these diets). Most will start off with keto then transition to carnivore then back & forth.
on all of these look into intermittant fasting.
your library will have books on Keto diet, carnviore diet and fasting.
Your father-in-law & husband did a wonderful job building out this basement. And, your mother did a wonderful job selecting the kitchen/bath fixtures out & decorations.
What a wonderful daughter you are to think outside the box to bring your mother to your home to take care of and have her stay connected daily to you, your husband & children!!! 💙
Cheers to taking care of elderly parents!!

Coming from an Asian household, multigenerational homes are very normal for our culture. And it’s for the very reasons you explain in this video. Aside from the financial savings, the family bonds that grow stronger over the years make it so worth it as well as the safety of our parents. I love this set up! Bravo 👏

I had 2 Uncle's in different military units, and they had to figure out which of them would change their times for active duty? (*They had a new law that limits our guys to 50 miles away from each other so they won't die at the same time.) They decided to stay there and get over it.
My Mom made cookies to put smiles on their faces. They had big fights with the other soldiers to see whose name was on the packages. They're both still alive but they have health issues too. Jim was in 2X USMC & George was full time in Air Force (meachanic). Jim worked 30 years at Pontiac and then he retired. I'm trying to see if I can get these guys on a cruise? WWYD?
I'm glad to see your Mom enjoying her Santa Clauses. 🤶 🎅 My Mom does the same thing too! Have Fun! Merry Christmas. Kristina Marks Tidwell

My son and son-in-law are employed at Firekeepers. We built a home on 16 acres this year with my daughter, son-in-law and their three children. My husband and I have our own small apartment on the main floor with our own outside deck. We had lived together for two years while we went thru the building process. Living in a multigenerational family home has so many benefits for all of us. I was happy to see that there are others in our area doing something very similar.

I love this idea. My son brought this idea up to me when they were selling their current home. Unfortunately, my DIL had other ideas of how it should be and it did not happen. I wish it would because my work has me out of town for a week at a time and it’s difficult to coordinate with seeing my grand kids as I don’t usually know when I will be home until the day before. It would have been perfect, but DIL had lots of “rules” for HER house. I said if I’m paying a portion of your mortgage, it’s my home too. So, it did not happen. I am devastated.

WOW!!! What a beautiful home! You are so blessed to have your mom living with you. Having her own apartment space in the basement is absolutely perfect. The backyard patio summertime flowers are GORGEOUS!! Now that's what I call a perfect relaxing nature setting for a morning coffee. ☕🌻Thank you for sharing.

You are right! When grandma tells her friends she lives in a basement they all feel sorry for her because they think of a dark basement. That is partly why we started our channel.. so grandma’s friends could see where she lived 😊

What a beautiful apartment for your Mom. I'm sure your Dad would have loved living there as well. My brother is also a Viet Nam Veteran. I would have loved having a home like this to share with my Mom or Mother-in-law. My Mom passed away almost 7 years ago, and my 98 year old Mother in Law was recently moved from Assisted Living to Memory Care. Your Mom is the luckiest lady in the world to be able to share such a lovely space with your family. God Bless!

Grannie Cyndy from South Australia here. I'm almost 72 yrs old and I am very blessed to still live and garden in my own house comfortably, especially since 2 hip replacements increased my mobility.
But I think your solution to the next stage of your parents' life is wonderful. I'm sorry your Dad didn't make it to live there.
The decor in the basement is beautiful! Some serious good taste there.

Same thing happened with my sister (and her family) and our parents. They both sold their houses and bought one big enough for both families. Our father passed away before the renovations were done, however. My mom had a studio-sized apartment with a covered patio over the double garage, so she could be outside and had room to exercise and relax. She lived for ten years after that and has now been gone for ten years. It was a good set up as she didn’t want to go to a retirement home and my sister (the only one living in the same city) promised that she wouldn’t put her in one.

What a lovely example for others to use. Not many people have the courage to do this. Although it makes sense on so many different levels, some people don’t have the ability to share their homes with their family members. I applaud you. Your dad must be so proud of you knowing that his wife, daughter, and grandchildren will be there for one another. Just beautiful.

I have plans to extend the property in same fashion as you have, so my sons can nest with their significant others as they plan their futures.

I recently lost my dad & am now driving back & forth from my home to moms to care for her. She's in a wheelchair from a bad stroke. I'm trying to clean up her place to sell it then buy a house that is wheelchair friendly. Long expensive process as you know. Bless you for taking care of your mom's needs. There definitely needs to be separation 😊 every family argues.

I think that's wonderful idea. My friend has a grandson in the navy and is stationed in Hawaii. While he was there an opportunity came to him in the form of 2 houses on 2 1/2 acres of land. The main house is one family 3bd2 1/2bath and one acre across that you can see from the kitchen window above the sink the 2 family house. The ground floor has 2 bdrm& 1&1/2 bath which my friend lives with his wife and on the second floor his son & his family in a 3bd 2bath. Since his grandson is in the navy all three of them bought the property. Both grandparents and parents sold their houses & each put half from the sales of the houses and at first put under his grandson's name because of the discount because he's a serviceman. Then once it was sold he just put it in his parents, grandparents and his name. They updated it and still saved too.
My mom has a land since 1977 & we're planning on building on it too & make it 2 family home for privacy and saving too. My mom and I have the ground floor & sister has the second floor with terrace with stairs leading into the back yard.

Thanks so much for sharing. I'm in Detroit boarding Dearborn MI Grandma's Multigenerational Apartment area is beautiful! I have an idea in the works for my Mom and me to build something similar. I moved back home after a divorce right during the beginning of COVID. My brother lives next door to our family home. We kept my Dad safe during Covid but he unfortunately passed away in late October 2021..He was in the U.S. Air Force and then worked for Ford Motor Company until he retired. My parent proudly retired to be the babysitter and school drop off/pick up for all the grandchildren. I will show you what we have planned for our new build in the next 2 years. Many blessings and Happy Holidays to you and your family.

This is so nice, and this is how we should live. As a person who uses a rollator and wheelchair it is hard to find accessible housing. All the new housing that is being built has stairs, 2 stories or higher, steps to go in, and etc. Nothing is built or thought about that we will eventually age and get old. I pray God continues to bless your family.
