Make no mistake Fish was the biggest reason marillion were so successful with his amazing song lyrics. The man music was and is pure poetry..... and this is one of my favourite songs it reaches deep into the soul with its power and its presence.
Its a honor to listen songs like this, such songs are beyond the reach of modern tastes, because they were born tainted with mediocrity... when I played it to someone around me, I felt like Copernicus hundreds of years ago when he told everyone that it is not the sun that rotates
A massive track for me and my family, won't go into detail. Marillion and Fish have helped me and my family through some dark times. Fish and absolute poet, So privileged to have been around for this as it happened. Our children's children's children's and so on will be studying his lyrics like we did with Keats and wordsworth to name a few
I saw Marillion in 1985 in the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz, this song was played alongside Misplaced Childhood. I have never experienced a better atmosphere at a concert, many girls burst into tears and everyone hugged each other, an unforgettable concert that I have already told my grandchildren about.
The weeping guitar solo at 3:36 chokes me up every time I hear it. How can music do that !? Its so agonisingly intense. Not sure if its evoking some sub-conscious association peculiar to my life, but it seems to get other people too, so there must be something absolute, something pure, and inspired in the expression that hooks into our emotions !? Every exquisite shrill, flourish, tremor and sustain. Genius.
I think it's all got to do with what mode the solo is played in different modes can make music sound happy,sad,eerie,sci-fi, or create tension like when watching a horror film
As an original Marillion fan of the 80s, I remember the negative boo boys who criticised Fish for what they thought were pretentious lyrics and overblown dramatics. Man oh man. Now Listen to his lyrics and the music against the backdrop of these bland banal 21st century times - and tell me you're not moved by his sublime poetry. Fish was a creative, a poet, a lover, and an entertainer. If you have a soul - you'll be touched by his emotional songs. For us lucky few, who witnessed the dawn and the sunset of The Jester of Hearts - for those of us who stood and lived in those bygone times - we salute you Derek.
I just can't listen to this without floods of emotion and pain flowing through my eyes and I mean GUSHING! Marillion you are part of my soul! Love from Raleigh NC

I remember discovering Marillion in the summer of 2018 while on vacation with my family. I was going into grade 11 in high school that September and by January 2019, I was in my first ever relationship with a girl in a few classes of mine. I also lost my grandfather that January amidst a wave of family drama, and that was one death in the family that really hit me quite hard, but she was there for me while I went through all of that. Of course, the first few months were exhilarating, but things started getting difficult after that and my anxiety got the better of me. We split up that September 2019 (beginning of grade 12) and I remember being so upset about my first break-up, but Marillion's music saved me during some of my worst moments and through coming back to myself and learning to love myself again. Usually, I prefer to associate deep lyrics with mythology and discovery, history and other conceptual frameworks on which to build a poetic empire and bring it to life through lyrics and music, but I couldn't help taking the lyric, "Stand straight/Look me in the eye and say goodbye" so literally and apply it to such a relatively topical but distressing situation in my life at that point. I've definitely moved on from that but it's a learning experience and one that means a lot to me. High schools memories, hey? 😊 Love you, Marillion and thank you for being with me and influencing my own musical endeavors, and simply for everything! 👋🇨🇦✨
Wprawdzie zastąpił GO inny wokalista (żałosna imitacja Fish'a), jednak ja nie chciałem go poznać, słuchać.
watched the mostly original Marillion performing this song twice , matinee and evenin performance , was a bit of a fan in the day ,,, very fond memories tyvm
My first gig was Marillion in March 1984 at Hammersmith Odeon for their Fugazi L.P.. I can still see it now burned on my memory, Fish using a giant reflective jigsaw piece suspended from the venue rig to shine onto people in the crowd in the stalls, though I was in the Circle. I gave up on Marillion after the dreadful split, though I did go see each live again, and buy each of their next albums after the split, but its like all the disciples without Jesus, such was the impact of Fish's departure, if you were there at the time, following it all through the pages of Kerrang! The Jester left, the artwork changed and the magic evaporated.

Totally a massive part of my teen years, ironic to be listening to songs like this when most of my peers were listening to songs about first love and/or making it to first base!
Który to już raz słucham , nie wiem . Lecz zawsze jak po raz pierwszy .Piękne . Kuba polska - Maryllion to Twoje życie . Tak . Maryllion to życie . Pozdrawiam wszystkich co kochają Maryllion .Maryllion z Fishem .
First time I heard a small bit of Fish was on a radio and was driving my car....we were not in the Internet era...and no cellphones either: I I changed direction parked and jumped into a record store thinking: OMG Peter Gabriel is back ! It wasn't but I bought Marillon's LP and love them. Of course they pay a tribute to their forefathers of the '70s. Progr Rock at its best !
This is Marillion's high point in their Fish era. "Script" and "Fugazi" were the best they ever were; the romanticism, desire and longing of tortured souls was utterly genuine and ingenious. I bought both of these albums as a teenager, and they have remained among my favorites during my entire life. But with "Misplaced", they unfortunately completely SOLD OUT, lost their credibility, became mega-chart success mainstream fare. At that point, the magic was over. I was a huge Marillion fan until "Misplaced", and felt that they were finished at that point. "Kayleigh" playing in the radio nonstop completely spoiled it for me. Fish left when success destroyed what made this band special, with "Straws" as a swan song. With H, they have successfully achieved a revival, but it took many years. Some of the old fans still discard them for their flirt with commercial success. However, I think that they have fully regained their genuine credibility in a totally new form. What they couldn't continue with Fish, they left behind, and instead made a new beginning with H. Marillion with H has a strongly spiritual, conciliatory orientation; with Fish, it was about the romanticism of tortured souls. Maybe this is what maturing means for a genius level band.
dont forget "heart of lothian" it made "chidhood" very special........................best moments ever INCUBUS and THE WEB end of story..................
Kayleigh and Lavender may have been commercial, radio-friendly songs, but it was hardly "selling out" to record a concept album as one continuous suite of music in 1985 when it couldn't have been less fashionable!
I completely disagree. I think they hit a rare mark for a band with "Misplaced Childhood" where everything just comes together perfectly (much like Kansas' "Leftoverture" or Yes' "Close to the Edge". Just because a little commercial popularity happened to come along with the album does not invalidate it's artistry -- this was during a time when the public was more open to recognizing actual music talent than the present day.
Well done on putting it so well, I totally agree with this, it is so accurate and true. If only they could have done a couple more albums like the first 2. Whilst 3 & 4 were good, they missed that pure creative force and the sheer magic they produced. I think Fish seems to think that the latter 2 are the Better ones. The commercial success was the beginning of the end for Marillion with Fish.
In the churches of progressive music, this is one church meant to be here for comfort & refuge long after we are all gone off this earth. Please take care of this church. Whether you are with Reverend Hogarth or Reverend Fish’s congregation. It doesn’t matter, we all are made better people 😭😭😭 😭😭😭 A little kid somewhere is being bullied or his mom is being abused or he’s dealing with a death in the family or he has an illness . He’s going to discover this band & hopefully it can mute some of the pain in life . 😔
Im young, this is my dad's fav music but it touches me deeper than any other modern shit. RESPECT.

been a fan since the 80s nearly 60 now and i still blast my ears with mega loud marillion every night keeps me sane they are pure class /

Totally a massive part of my teen years, ironic to be listening to songs like this when most of my peers were listening to songs about first love and/or making it to first base!
A melhor banda do mundo obrigado pelas músicas e emoções
Thx
Start to listening in the early 80s today still in my playlists,Marillion forever
This song 'll make me cry forever💔💔. Fish' s voice and texts full of soul are mesmerizing as an eternal blast💥💥 in my heart and in my mind💯💯💯💯 💕💕💕💕
Very well said. Special heartfelt and moving guitar solos are what I love the most. Clearly this is one - straight from the heart.

Siete Grandi musica ti entra dentro, senza uscire mai PIU'!!!!! Grandi Poeti della Musica. Vi Adoro. MARILLION
In my opinion, one of the best songs in the world.
Wonderful song! Wonderful album! Wonderful all the stuff! I deep love it!
Ojciec - Peter Rothery pracował w miejscowym banku, a matka - Marian Rothery była kucharką.
Remarkable, I'd forgotten just how good this one was.
Yesterday starts tomorrow, Tomorrow starts today!!! Best lyric ever.
the guitar solo is so great!!!
oh yeahhhh...
Another great track from this masterpiece
Fish, chapeau bas !
Aye, Yer Talkin Shite. Misplaced is a work of art.
Great song. Magnificent vocals and a blistering guitar solo from Steve Rothery.
I was sweet sixteen when the track comes out...and i love this song like the first time
utwór kompletny, tekstowo, wokalnie, muzycznie. Brawo,
stunning guitar solo 🤝
Listening that GUITAR SOLO,sometimes it seems to me all I want in my life that SOLO WOULD NEVER END..
Amazing, unique, simply the best!
This guitar solo is like being hit by a wall of sound, fantastic.
Tout simplement GEANT ! Du grand Marillion.
Fish-era Marillion was so sophisticated yet sentimental...
Amo Steve Rothery!

......soooooo greatful time to your Music in Berlin Diskothek SOUND - Thx dear my friend 😎 😎 😎
Best felling solo.
Fish's lyrics are rock poetry at its finest. Right up there with Jim Morrison or - yes I mean it - the great Bob Dylan himself.
