We use CLE math as well. Math grade 1 is definitely going to be the most parent intensive than the other grades. So you do need the teacher guide. It tells you what math facts to practice and what numbers to count by that day (2s, 5s, 10s). It also tells you what to do in the "Counting Book" that is sold separately. Grade 2 has the instruction, and the other things mentioned above, in the student workbooks so I have found that I don't use the teacher guide besides for grade 1 and as they reach grade 4 or 5 only to quickly grade the tests. I don't have them take the unit test unless they are working soley independently. Each lesson in the unit has instruction written directly to the student so that when the child is ready they can learn on their own. If I am working with them one on one then I don't need to see a test to know how they are doing and what we need to work on. My dd didn’t become fully independent until 6th grade. So we do the tests so I can make sure she is understanding each lesson.
She does this on purpose as I am filming, because I'm not paying attention to her lol. She smiles when I look at her. She knows EXACTLY what she is doing haha.
For the younger grades I would say yes because it has the word problems that you read and the money cup amounts you are to give them along with tips on how to teach this or that. The older grades from my understanding is just answers so you could grade them yourself if you wanted to. Out of convenience and the fact that they really are inexpensive I would get them but probably not necessary.
I'd like to also add that the teacher manuals give some extra ways of teaching things that come in really helpful. My children LOVE this curriculum. I use it for math, learning to read/reading and my older son is using their history also. It is an AMAZING curriculum!!

Thank you for sharing, but I have a question....are teacher manuals a must?
