  • When did human civilization begin and what was it like? How did it develop? This story is a very long and detailed one, but in this series we will attempt to tell it, by looking at the major civilizations in world history, starting with Ancient Mesopotamia all the way up until present day. All your favorite kings and empires are in this one, so let's get started!

    Ohhhhh baby this is gonna be A GOOD SERIES, Prof Dave.
    Also, my regular request for a video debunking the shroud of Turin claims. A lot of apologists point to the presence of organic compounds as proof that the shroud is authentic, and they debunk the STRP findings that show the Shroud was made in the Middle ages. I don't know enough about organic compounds or radiometric dating to know why these apologists are wrong, and I'd love to see a good old-fashioned Prof Dave takedown
    Anyway, thanks for this series and ill continue to be a Dave fan, Even if you never get around to debunking the Shroud of Turin. Have a good day my friend.

    Hey Dave, great introduction, I have however one minor criticism to share: The use of AI generated images such as the ones at 0:32 and 1:56 (left) is not recommended. without getting into the ethical issue of how AI generation works, there's the issue of inaccuracy, because very, very often, AI generated images can contain rather large mistakes and inaccuracies, and therefore may portray the topics at hand poorly. This is especially problematic for history lessons which may rely on accurate depictions of the past as we know it. Either way, i look forwards to re-discovering this subject, likely one of the most important ones to learn in order to improve our social and political surroundings :)

    • @ethan1142028
      @ethan1142028 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It's funny how you object to those, but not the (literally ten seconds earlier) clips of someone writing with a feather quill, or a Viking with dreadlocks and tattoos. Some people have a really bias selection about what inaccuracies are acceptable...

    • @nobodysbody
      @nobodysbody 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I'm of the opinion that even human-created art depicting ancient times is going to be rife with inaccuracies and misrepresentations, what with artistic liberties and the fact that artists may not even know about the finer details of the time period they're depicting. It's just a general idea of what the time looked like, and unless we're discussing a very specific scene, I'm of the opinion that AI generated images are fine here.

    Hey, genuine question: How did trading work in the ancient times? Or if it even had some sort of trade back then?

    • @peterwyetzner5276
      @peterwyetzner5276 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      There was trading by sea, in the case of the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, and the Indian Ocean, and by land along trade routes like the Silk Road. Both were dangerous- sailors stuck close to the coast to avoid bad weather, and travelers could be attacked. And until around 700 BCE, there was no coinage, so trades had to be in goods, There was also no way to know in advance what people would want to buy, so trade tended to focus on luxury items that were not too heavy, like spices and dyes. Sometimes people would set up colonies along these routes so they could run regular trades with their homelands. The Athenians imported grain from the Black Sea this way, and the Phoenicians settled as far away as Spain..

An ancient Hindu temple thousands of miles from India, there empire must of been massive at its peak. They say it’s 1,100 years old but I get the feeling it may be much older, I’m no expert though.

    The dislocation that we have between the ancient world through to the modern world, and our distorted view, that we are more advanced and more intelligent now, is arguably, a contributing factor to the growth of anti intellectualism within society. People seem to think that we are at the peak of human intelligence, an epoch of supremacy, instead of understanding that we are an amalgamation of our species worldwide successes, over millenia. That success hasn't been and isn't defined by borders, language or any other arbitrary condition, instead it is our species ability to adapt and problem solve, cycle after cycle, which maintains our advance. Not acknowledging and understanding how our past, present and future are interlocked is not something desirable; thankfully we have creators who want to address this.
