Just finished the book The Volunteer today...it's heartbreaking and represents the BEST of humanity. This man was a hero in the truest sense of the word.
I 've read it too. Just an incredible man. From fighting against the Nazis in September 1939, to volunteering to go to Auschwitz, then his participation in the Warsaw Uprising . Riveting stuff!
Imagine a man with 2 young children and a wife volunteering for this mission. All for his country. He didn't even the atrocities being done to his people in those camps. I doubt few would do that these days for America.

He personifies the Polish struggle against two highly aggressive neighbours, one to the west, the other to the east. I just leaned about Witold Pilecki on the Martyr Made podcast (Inhumans episode). I still cannot believe this extraordinary, brave, God fearing man, has not more recognition. The rock band Sabaton has a song about him (4859 Inmate), and another great song, Uprising, about de Warsaw Uprising, the last one, brought tears to my eyes. I hope Mr. Pilecki’s life gets to be more widely known and gets the respect and recognition that deserves. Big respect.

He survived Germans, the Warsaw uprising and, therefore, as a patriotic fighter the Polish communists killed him to deprive Poland of people able to organize the country after the war.
I will also teach my children because I'm German and a scout and he was a scout and stood up against the evil Germans, just as my children should in case of a Nazi germany or a comunist Germany.

Worth mentioning that his remains are most likely somewhere under the named graves of his own prosecutors that were unfortunately not yet removed from military cemetery in Warsaw. See: communist judge Roman Kryże. Also Roman's Kryże son remains active in politics until today. He even was making some important penal code reforms in Poland in 2000s under PiS rule. If you think decommunization happened in Poland you are wrong :)

Nowadays we talk too loosely about bravery. This should be a lesson to us. Witold Pilecki must be one of the bravest men who ever lived.
