    Sir you did a great job on this truck. It´s a beautiful truck and looks like it will treat you well for years to come. Happy wheeling and hope the best for you. I my self have a Toyota, It´s a 1979 4wd its been converted with to a flat bed, 3in lift on 32´s, soon going to swap the 4.10 gears with 5.29´s a 6in lift on 37´s.

    Glad to hear it man, makes me want to do it. I miss having a nice rig lol. She's getting tired quick between cracking the frame and just about tearing the steering box off the other day, I need every bushing for the springs and every rod end. Shit happens when you wheel hard 3 times a week and still daily drive it. I'm hoping links will take the abuse better. You put together a nice rig and awesome vids keep it up dude.

    probably one of the sickets toyotas i have ever seen. I have owned a few older yoters in my day and sold my last one to purchase a brand new tacoma. Having owned a new (lifted) tacoma for about 2 years now, i would drive an old SAS toyota over a new one ANY day.

  • @dixiemudtoy
    @dixiemudtoy  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Front bumper is a custom design by me, built by Sixditch Crawlers in Lilburn, Georgia. Axle is from an '83 Pickup, and the coil 3 link is a custom SAS done by Sixditch Crawlers as well. Pickup axles are easier to come by than FJ axles, so I just modified it with IFS hubs, 1.75" hub spacers and custom trusses.

    Love it! it rides like a Cadillac. Of course it has a good bit of sway, and I was going to hook up a sway bar, but decided that after getting used to its handling characteristics, it wasn't necessary for me (if you drive with caution, i.e. not treat it like a race car). Leaving the rear end with leafs makes it very streetable w/o swaybars. Ride is great on the highway, I've done 75-85 consistently on the interstate for around 2 hours in one trip with no problems. Flexes like crazy.

    thats a very impressive build so far. very clean install, even better welds. I'm in the process of trying to find an 82-85 front toyota axle to start the SAS swap. but trying to find them in oregon is very hard by its self. I have never seen a spring SAS before. thats sparked my interest now vs leaf springs.

    Hey diximudtoy just to answer your question about why old Yoter vs new... The old ones are so simple and capable. Great styling in my opinion, I really really would like to see toyota pay some tribute and dip the extra cab rear window below the window line like they did on the 2nd gen and 3rd gen pickups. Such a unique thing toyota did. My new one is tons of fun but doesn't have the character of the older ones.

    thanks bud! research, research, research. figure out what setup you want to run...coil or leafs, how much / little lift, what size tires, your goals (desert, rocks, mud)...then start acquiring all of your parts. Get your axle before you start fabbing and rebuild from hub to hub. Once you have the axle built and all your parts / equipment or shop of choice, then get to work...and be involved. It's your truck, make sure it's done the way you want it...not how they think it should be.

      I have a 1999 4Runner with a blown 3.4 engine automatic. The good thing about that 1999 is the driver side drop out, so Dana 60s (front and rear) will fit right under there I hope. Couple the Dana axles with a small block Chevy 350, follow your idea with the three link front suspension and in about a year, hard work and a boat load of money, I will have a nice little trail boss. :-)

    @TheDeathCrawler thanks bud, means alot coming from an experienced toyota wheeler. Coils and links perform better than I could imagine. It's taken some tweaking, but overall it drives great. Does well at 90 mph even without sway bars; flexes like crazy, super soft ride. other than a little death wobble that was solved with a few tweaks, it's been great.

    @clinthilux IFS trucks' track width is 2-3" wider than SFA trucks, and to match the IFS rear axle width (and just for stability at increased ride heights), this can be achieved by swapping to IFS hubs; these allow for the width increase without using spacers, and also allow for retrofitting V6 brake calipers and vented FJ 40 hubs (instead of the solid factory units).

  • @ThomasXp

    Really clean, wow

  • @dixiemudtoy
    @dixiemudtoy  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    from my experiences, the 3 link is a much better setup. It flexes infinitely better than leafs (I have about 40" of flex per front corner), and rides like a cadillac on the road, so incredibly smooth. Adjustibility and more / less lift is easy with changing the link lengths and swapping to different springs. The only downside is it's not quite as stable as leafed front end without swaybars, but it just adds to the fun of driving for me...still streetable and highway safe with leafs out back.

    nice job! maybe you don't even have the truck anymore but just in case you do I have a question. How are the road manners on the air shocks? I notice you have leafs in the back does that help with body roll on cornering on the street? I'm planning out my next phase of my 1st gen 4runner build and air shocks are way more budget friendly than coilovers but I'm wondering if you experienced any cons with them. thanks!

    • @dixiemudtoy
      @dixiemudtoy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh I've still got it, but they're not air shocks they're Bilstein 5100 series. And road manners are as good as can be considering it's now hydro steering assisted and has no swaybars lol

    • @dixiemudtoy
      @dixiemudtoy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely more stable with coils / leafs out front / back with no sways compared to a truck with coils front and back with no sways. You just gotta be situationally aware and take corners slow and be weary of sudden steering inputs

  • @98SAS4runner
    @98SAS4runner 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @dixiemudtoy to try and add a little more flex I made 6 1/4 shackles and when I welded the perches on a gave the shackles a sharper then normal angle which gives me another inch or two in drop. I haven't measured how much I can lift them but I drove up on my friend's 35'' swampers and it looked like I could go quite a bit further. I am guessing somewhere around 40''.

    thanks man...nah, i was thinking about a wheeling style flatbed (i.e. dovetail, high arches, tube steel / steel panes etc), but i decided against it...i like having bedsides, maybe one day way later on

  • @98SAS4runner
    @98SAS4runner 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @dixiemudtoy Thanks, the leafs work well for me, I can still corner pretty fast and don't have much body roll. Not as nice as coil overs but they were in my budget. The last time I measured I was around 37'' in the front with all three wheels on the ground. The more I drive it the more it softens up and flexes. I have trail gear 3'' Toyota springs in the front and Chevy springs in the rear.

  • @dixiemudtoy
    @dixiemudtoy  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't remember off the top of my head, it was mostly figured out on the jig...I'll have to go out and take some measurements sometime this week. I have been experiencing "bottoming out" issues off-road on the bump stops when hitting bumps / wash-outs off road, so I recently swapped to using ZJ 2" lift coils, which are rated about 240 pounds compared to the factory TJ 165 lbs...it has provided me a little more lift and a much more manageable ride on road...and still flexes 40".

  • @wildrootsfarm1975
    @wildrootsfarm1975 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    looks great, love the SAS swaps! when mocking up, how do you determine how much compression the spring will have and placement to spring perch on frame (Height?); or do you just mock the spring location in a general spot relative to wheel spacing and adjust spring after install?

  • @dixiemudtoy
    @dixiemudtoy  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @91trxryder Lift is about 3-4" total, travel per corner is about 30" full compression to full droop.

    Hello, what are the specs for those coil springs? Would you still recommend those coils springs for my Toyota pickup?
    Any advise or tips for my 3 link solid axle swap?
    I’m torn between 3 link and coil springs and leaf springs!!!

    • @dixiemudtoy
      @dixiemudtoy  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't remember the specs off the top of my head, but I know they're 2" lift coils for like a late 90s grand Cherokee. The entire 3 link was custom fabricated so what length coils you go with depends on where the top of the coil buckets end up being positioned. But as far as ride quality, they are great for the truck.
      Coilovers would probably ride better, but this does great off road and is waayyy cheaper lol

    • @dixiemudtoy
      @dixiemudtoy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Leaf springs are simple and easy, but it will ride terrible lol. Definitely do some kind of coil and link setup IMO

  • @Skybraker
    @Skybraker 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    That truck is probably around and 1986-88 model telling by the the body style and the fact that it had independent front suspension. If you want one that has a straight axial in front then you would have to find a 1985 or older model unless you wan't to do what he did. I have a 1989 pickup with a 22R-E which does great on the trail, but mine is not as aggressive as this guys but really any one of these trucks between 1983-1995 are great trucks to start with a lot of part available.

  • @dixiemudtoy

    @TheJake538 i was going to get one fabricated out of one of my old torsion bars (apparently this is pretty common on SAS's), but after the new shocks went on, it's really not that bad...still corners pretty well, all things considered.
