  • Christmas growing up in Derry always meant sing songs around the piano. Here’s a song that would have featured regularly and it still has a certain magic for me.This, without doubt is one of the classic ‘parlour songs’.
It was written by an Irish songwriter, James Lynam Molloy,(1837-1909) who also contributed ‘The Kerry Dances’ and ‘Bantry Bay’ to the Great Irish Songbook.
Sadly he is not much celebrated and most people have never heard of him but I believe he belongs up there with the best. The song has a lovely wistful quality, enhanced here by the soft tones of Geraldine’s voice.
Sit back, relax and let the music wash over you.

Once in the dear dead days beyond recall,
When on the world the mists began to fall,
Out of the dreams that rose in happy throng
    Low to our hearts Love sang an old sweet song;
And in the dusk where fell the firelight gleam,
Softly it wove itself into our dream.
Just a song a twilight, when the lights are low,
And the flickering shadows softly come and go,
Tho' the heart be weary, sad the day and long,
Still to us at twilight comes Love's old song,
    Comes Love's old sweet song.
Even today we hear Love's song of yore,
Deep in our hearts it dwells forevermore.
Footsteps may falter, weary grow the way,
Still we can hear it at the close of day.
So till the end, when life's dim shadows fall,
Love will be found the sweetest song of all.
Just a song a twilight, when the lights are low,
And the flickering shadows softly come and go,
Tho' the heart be weary, sad the day and long,
Still to us at twilight comes Love's old song,
    Comes Love's old sweet song.

Oh wow! So lovely to hear Geraldine's voice again! Still as warm as ever. It would be so wonderful to be able to listen to her music on streaming services. At least I can still listen to her LPs on my trusty record player.

So absolutely lovely. These old songs are nearly lost but they live in my heart where i hear them still. After this one they always sang I Dont Want to Play in Your Yard for us kids, then There's a Long, Long Trail A Winding for Grandpap. Still magical.
