This worked really well for me. There were two hitches though. First, the serial link to the hyperterminal only used pins 1 and 5. If you use pin 3 it causes a communication problem. Second, the password I was recovering actually repeated itself twice, so there may be a few extra steps when deciphering it.
Have you tried using serial port monitor from eltima? Pretty easy, no cable splitting, need only one computer. Just get rslinx communicating to plc,start rslogix, try to go online. Start serial port monitor and type in com port to monitor. Monitor shows password as you describe in video.

I'm not sure what hyper terminal looks like on windows 10, because screw windows 10, but any terminal program will work. You just have to setup a new connection and select the serial port that the data tapped, straight through or home made cable (connecting PC Pins 2 RX and 5 Ground) is connected to on the PC; the RSlinx comm port is separate( Find comm port number in device manager). Make sure that the data tap switches are on and sending it to the tapped port(pin 2). you just have to make sure the data rate is the same 9600, 19200 etc, or you can download a 15 day trial of Eltima serial port monitor and monitor the RSlinx comm port in the same way without a data tap.

If correct then you may need a different terminal program as I believe microsoft hyper terminal was ditched after XP. Also, is the cable off the tap a straight through cable, one to one to PC second comm port, and can you go online with the plc through the data tap (PC---straight through cable---data tap---micrologix cable---PLC)?

rslinx seems to lock the port out from hyperterminal, any solutions? tried running as admin, didn't help
